           Fear thy neighbor, humans incapable of peace

 

How can we expect peace in the world when we combat it daily in our own backyards? 

We fight with spouses,

significant others, friends, and neighbors and call the cops.  There’s even a show about this on cable TV called, “Fear thy neighbor.”

We divorce our spouses and have domestic disputes with significant others at times requiring

emergency care, other times resulting in murder. Siblings fight and at times result in bloodshed and broken bones. Schools, shopping malls and houses of worship have all been targets of mass shootings. Many of these real-life stories can be seen on TV shows like Dateline and 48 Hours.

Social media is full of hate

and if you've ever written an opinion piece for a periodical comments sections are full of evil and even murder threats with the vitriol thrown out by the readers. 

How can we expect

peace in the Middle East amongst Jews and Muslims, Israel and Palestine, even our own political system if we can't even have peace with family, friends, and neighbors or write an opinion piece without attacks?

Peace is something great

for politicians and hippies to campaign and talk story on but is something that humans will never achieve on planet Earth.

           If I wanted a Big Mac I’d go to Micky D’s

Sushi is right up

in there in the top 10 of my favorite cuisines. 

I lived in Japan once upon a time for a year teaching English as a second language.

The sushi was so fresh that even the 7-11 store sushi was better than some of the best sushi restaurants in Hawaii. 

The rice is so superior to American rice, once you come back to America, even Hawaii, it’s hard to eat the rice here, it’s so starchy compared to pure Japanese rice. 

The fish on the Japanese sushi is so fresh you’d expect it to swim. 

Supermarket sushi

will be marked down to half price (Han Gaku) after it sits for a few hours. 

I never saw Big Mac sauce

on Sushi when I lived in Japan.  Now everywhere you go in Hawaii you see this Big Mac Sauce, (Russian Dressing) call it what you want drizzled all over your sushi. 

For me it’s a sin to drizzle  Big Mac sauce on sushi, even American sushi deserves better. 

After all, if I wanted

Big Mac sauce on my sushi, I’d go to Micky D’s and order two all-beef patties, special sauce, cheese, lettuce, on a sesame seed bun!

                     DNA tests, real or scams

This whole DNA hoopla has me questioning the whole authenticity of this crazy fad of spitting into a test tube to find your most hidden secrets.

Amazon had Prime Day back on Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11-12th 2023. I was able

to order an Ancestry DNA kit for $59.00 half of its normal price during that two-day window. I've been wanting to do it for some time now. It seemed like the ideal time and the perfect price.

When I was a young man I lived quite a wild lifestyle, with many one-night stands,

and not the kind that holds lamps. And since we all have expiration dates and the expression goes, "life is short," I wanted to see if I had any kids out there and I don't mean goats since it's always been something I thought might be.

My DNA results finally came in from ancestry.com 

I found out I have 3 children I know nothing about and that I'm adopted.  

Just kidding. (LOL) 😁

Actually pretty boring stuff, I found out my sister is my sister and they say, my nephew

is my cousin, go figure. I also have thousands of fourth and higher cousins, pretty uneventful. I was hoping for some excitement for this crotchety old guy, like Donald Trump maybe my father? I kid my Democrat friends.

The way Ancestry works is you spit in a test tube then mix it with this blue liquid and ship it off to their lab. It takes 6-8 weeks for the final results. That whole time period they bombard you with

emails to create a family tree almost daily. Therefore of course I attempted to put one together which gave them a good basic history of who I am, plus any relative who may have already completed Ancestry would be easily linked through modern algorithms.

 They had no cousins from my maternal side on my final DNA match even though I did give

my mother's history. All DNA was Paternal. I believe it is because many of my cousins on my fathers' side are already linked to ancestry and this is how they gathered a good portion of the information, not really from spit.

They also prompt you with a few emails each week to purchase an ancestry membership

I knew joining Ancestry
would be a bad idea... 

for $24.99 a month after an initial two-week period which supposedly shows you things you could find in an online record search such as marriage and death certificates.

How much DNA is actually generated from spit and how much is gathered from the information you provided? And why does it take them weeks to analyze a vial of spit going through a science machine that looks like something from

the Twilight Zone? It isn't 1950. They make you wait because they're trying to make you submit and add as much info into the making of a family tree as possible. This is how they make their DNA charts, from the information you provide, not from the spit. 

I wish that I never did a family tree and just sent spit and waited to see what they came up with. They probably would've found out that I just had morning breath and a goober stuck in my saliva.

Oh well, still keeping

my fingers crossed just in case this spitting thing may be real or something exciting like one of you reading this is a long-lost relative, or maybe just maybe Jeff Bezos is my half-brother?

      The labor shortage and people no longer wanting to work

Call it what you like,

a side effect of the pandemic, too many participation trophies, pure laziness, too many government programs, or folks just simply don't want to work anymore. The labor shortage is real. 

Locally on the Garden Island just last week Micky D's in Kapa'a closed its dining room. The reason given by the manager was they couldn't find enough workers.

popular healthcare and urgent care center on Kauai’s North Shore (Hale Lea Family Medicine & Urgent Care ) announced its closure after 30 years, because of staffing shortages and insufficient insurance reimbursement rates.

Also this past week the Kauai bus announced that it is temporarily suspending service on Sundays beginning August 27 citing ongoing staffing shortages as everyone else. 

The Kaua‘i Bus currently has 49 bus drivers on staff; however, only 43 drivers are currently

on active rotation. The agency has eight vacant driver positions available and is actively seeking applicants.

Sunday bus service will remain suspended until staffing has returned to sufficient levels.

Nearly every business is having staffing shortages, from grocery and big box stores to

five-star and fast food restaurants, hotels, airlines, doctors' offices, school bus drivers, teachers, and even jobs that were once in demand like County jobs with good pay and great benefits. Just imagine what low-paying jobs must be like to fill.

I believe much of this can be attributed to a few factors. The participation trophy

generation is all grown up and plain and simple don't want to start at the bottom and work up the ladder, they all want to start out as CEOs.

Another thing that has always bothered me is that every graduation season I always read in The Garden Island News about the Valedictorian of the

local high schools here on the island. There is never just one, there are usually upward of 30 per graduating class. How can 30-plus people be the smartest? There can only be one smartest and best student. Just as in the Super Bowl, there is one MVP, not 30.

 This gives young people

a superiority factor way of thinking that they are smarter than they actually are. This leads many to believe manual or entry-level positions are below their level and should they ever accept such a job they would most likely demand way too much money.

Many other businesses

have been forced to close because laborers have figured they can do better on government assistance than what part-time work would warrant them even at $20.00 or more per hour. 

There is also a rumor of many in the labor force moving off the island due to lack of affordable housing while the rich and famous continue to transplant.

COVID assistance has allegedly ended, however, you can still plead your case for emergency assistance.

I cannot blame

people for not wanting to work when they can do better with food, medical and rental benefits sitting right at home or on their parent's couch.

When will this all end? Not anytime time soon if we keep the same "Good ole boys" in office, nationally, statewide, and locally.
