"Sharing a room with a snorer..." 'Obama Da Dog' (Source)

Obama Da Dog  is a life long resident of Kapa'a Hawai'i.
Obama can be seen running along James "Kimo" Rosen's
bicycle. Obama Da Dog turns 7 on Christmas day!

Sharing a room with a snorer

Some retired deputy sheriffs went to a retreat in the mountains. To save money, they decided to sleep two to a room. No one wanted to room with Daryl because he snored so badly.

They decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns.
The first deputy slept with Daryl and comes to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot.

They said, "Man, what happened to you?"

He said, "Daryl snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night."
The next night it was a different deputy's turn. In the morning, same thing--hair all standing up, eyes all blood-shot.

They said, "Man, what happened to you? You look awful!"

He said, "Man, that Daryl! shakes the roof. I watched him all night."

The third night was Frank's turn. Frank was a big burly ex-football player; a man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast bright eyed and bushy tailed. "Good morning," he said.
They couldn't believe it! They said, "Man, what happened?"

He said, "Well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Daryl into bed and kissed him good night. He sat up and watched me all night long."

The Fun of being 84..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Vintage Bettejo)

Bettejo Dux has lived on the cosmic Garden
Island of Kaua'i for over 40 years.

Bettejo is a regular opinion writer in the Garden Island news
and is the author of the famed novella, "The Scam."
 Her latest fiction"Children of extinction"
is now  released and available on Amazon!
Bettejo at 84 years young taking time
out of her busy day for one of many
scheduled book signings.

The Fun of being 84

It's been a busy morning. Fed my beloved old horse, Aristotle. I prepare him a warm mash, salt, carrots, bran and molasses. He loves it. My handsome movie star vet, Scott Sims, says horses don't have a sense of taste. I reply, "Well don't tell Ari, he hasn't read that part of the book." Since I was five, I've bribed horses with sugar cubes. Amazing what you can get a horse to do with some sugar cubes in your pocket.

Bettejo and Aristotle enjoying
another day in paradise!

I was taught, as a little girl, a good horse
 soldier feeds his horse first.

My first riding instructor was General Cress- the Tiger of Luzon-a total pussy cat. He said I was a natural, which pleased my father. His daughter, Cornelia Van Ness Cress, was a brilliant, patient teacher. A lesbian I learned from a gossipy friend of my mother's. It made no- never- mind to me. I always got to ride her dressage horse, Indian, on foggy wet morning jaunts through the Mills College Campus. She said I wasn't a 'lemon drop' because I was one of the few kids who showed up for lessons on a rainy day. I loved the fog. Still do. Even 'voggy' fog on Kaua'i. I love the smell of sulfur dioxide in the morning.

Bettejo with her grown up puppy
'Boots,' one of her many best friends.
Next, two growing up kittens-Reba and Rosa-and my grown up puppy-Boots- get their fare. Today, Duke, the noisy Macaw, who greets me every morning with a cheerful "Hi",  got fresh water, a  bowl of  parrot food- raisins, peanuts, a crumpled cookie, he has a decided sweet tooth-and  two slices of bananas.

Then I turn a feral hen, and the chick she's trying to raise, loose to wander and scratch their way into a long day's journey into night.  Mama is teaching her baby to eat worms and insects and other goodies they find in every pile of fallen leaves. Every day her baby gets smarter and bigger. Fluffier, too. This morning she's teaching it how to fly. She jumped up on a raised bench and clucked, "Come on sweetheart, try your wings." Today it did. I don't know if it's a boy chicken or a girl chicken, but it's sure cute and, I think, precocious.

A Kaua'i Sunrise in the Vog...

Then it's my turn. A cup of coffee-organic, no GMOs-and half a slice of croissant. No butter. It's drippy and voggy out and I love watching yellow leaves swing and sway and waft their way to earth.
looking back a few years.
 Bettejo playing checkers
 with her nephew, Tom.

At 84 ripe I love looking back. There's a lot to look back on. I love being here.  There's a lot of here. And I love looking forward.

I love learning. The mother hen is teaching me as well as her baby.

A lot can be learned from a
mother hen...

I love time. I love space. We worked hard, my husband and I, to acquire the space. My jungle, which I love. The time, which I got but could not share with him. I love the time I have now to think about our life together. I love to wonder if he would approve. He'd be happy  I'm having fun.

animal friends.  ;-)

"Nobody is going to live forever..." 'Kimo's World #69' (Please tell us your views on burial?)

James "Kimo" Rosen is a retired Professional photographer
and publisher. Rosen lives on the  beautiful Garden Island
of Kaua'i with his best friend Obama Da Dog.
Rosen also posts the Sunrise daily on his Facebook Timeline.

Kimo's World #69

Nobody is going to live forever

Nobody is going to live forever. Our days are numbered here on earth. It doesn't matter if your 15, 30, 50 or 80, nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. There is no doubt that one hundred years from now, nobody reading this will still be alive, unless of course there are major medical breakthroughs.

I am approaching the Big 6-0 and constantly thinking of how I want to be laid to rest. My religion of Judaism believes in burial since the body will someday resurrect when the Messiah finally comes. The Dilemma is, I do not like the idea of my body deteriorating with bugs eating me through a wooden casket. Orthodox Christians believe similar in that the body should not be cremated.
Rosen at his portrait studio in
Homer, Alaska 1984...

Intellectually cremations seems like the perfect way to leave this earth. You are not taking up expensive real estate that will become scarcer and scarcer each year. You will not pollute the land with expensive coffins. Coffins are very expensive on top of that the morticians put gallons of embalming fluid, and tons of metal and exotic hardwoods from coffins into the ground.

Throughout the United States there is increasing interest in natural burial as a way to honor lives that have been lived with care for the planet.

Natural burial, also known as "green burial," was the standard practice in our country until the Civil War, when it became common to preserve the bodies of fallen soldiers in order to make the long trip home by train from the battlefields. Since that time, natural burial has continued to be quietly practiced in the United States by members of Jewish, Muslim and some Christian faith communities.

There are all kinds of funerals and services for the departed. The concept of celebrating the person's life and having a party verses a traditional funeral has become very acceptable.

Religion can dictate whether you are buried  or cremated. My friends in Alaska  burnt on a stake their departed friend per his request.   There are also wartime burials at sea.
Rosen with 3 silver salmon
1983, Rocky River, Alaska...

I believe the Hawaiian Paddle out is the most romantic way to go, religion aside. The Hawaiian paddle out has my endorsement and is the way I wish to go. A beautiful ceremony where friends and family paddle your remains out to sea. When all the canoes and kayaks are gathered a touching ceremony of spreading the ashes along with flowers and leis  is so touching that I every time I witness one of these I get chicken skin.

I am not concerned with man made rules of religion. I am more concerned with a personal relationship with the Lord my God.

"Garage clean up time..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York.
and has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for over 30 years

Garage clean up time

Finally we have some weather that is moderately nice, first things first, time to clear out the garage, get rid of the nasty stuff that has coated the floor and look for visitors that have moved in for the winter.

It’s quite a project to neaten this catch all from the winter.  When we have something we feel we better keep, whether it is useful or not, it’s taken to the garage or basement.

This year I am keeping in mind that our garage sale in the neighborhood will be coming up this summer which will be here before we know it.  I have stacked one side of the garage with useful, re-sale items that will be a hot commodity in the summer.

Someone told me if we line the corners in the garage with dryer sheets we can get rid of the mice that took over this winter. If that doesn't work  it’s the you know what for them.

They are both destructive and messy and I am afraid one day they will march into the house.

It’s a pleasure to drive into the garage now. We hope it stays that way at least until next winter.

"The Market Place..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Vintage Bettejo)

Bettejo Dux has lived on the cosmic Garden
Island of Kaua'i for over 40 years.

Bettejo is a regular opinion writer in the Garden Island news
and is the author of thefamed novella, "The Scam."
 Her latest fiction"Children of extinction"
is now  released and available on Amazon!
Editors note,
 This blog is  continued from last week.. If you haven't read 'Belief' the link is listed below;
http://dakinetalk.blogspot.com/2015/04/belief-bettejo-dux-vintage-bettejo.html

The Market Place

It's a huge market place. Religion is big business in America.

Why did I choose this aspect of religion as the first to pursue? Well, I live in America. I pay taxes. I'm not religious. I don't go to church. I don't pray. I accept no gifts-food, housing or otherwise- from either the church or the state. I've discovered that, while churches often feed the poor, there is a price-one's soul, if there is such a thing-and the food is usually awful.  Little concern about food value. Canned stuff and the cheapest quality,  often donated and usually offered on Holidays and in community centers, large feeding stations-table after table after table- for anyone who  might get there, and served up by sanctimonious  volunteers.

Also, churches have a habit of taking care of their own. I live in a Mormon rich community-meaning there are a lot of them-and after Iniki an outsider, a neighbor, was  not made welcome at their tables. At least I wasn't. I went seeking a water supply for my animals and, in the process, was in several kitchens with gas stoves producing quantities of aromatic coffee and bacon and eggs of which  I was not offered a cup or invited to share  or even helped with the original request as to where to find water.

The Mormon Church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is the fourth richest religion in the country. At the turn of the 21st century, its assets were estimated to be over $30 billion dollars. You'd think then, wouldn't you, believers might share a cup of coffee with a neighbor in need?

But the biggest Financial Power on earth is, of course, the Catholic Church.

The Vatican has large investments in the Morgan bank, The Chase-Manhattan Bank, the First National Bank in New York, the Bankers Trust Company in America. It owns billions of shares in Gulf Oil, Shell, General Motors, Bethlehem Steel, General Electric, International Business Machines, TWA and more. It probably ranks second only to the US in total purchase. It's the biggest corporation in America. Their assets and real estate holdings exceed those of Standard Oil, AT&T and U,S. Steel combined.  It's treasury of gold is worth several billion dollars. It is the biggest financial power, wealth accumulator and property owner in existence. Its investments control the Federal Reserve. The pope,  as the ruler, is the richest individual of the twentieth century.

With this vast sum of money it could create sustainable programs to end famine on earth. They have the power to oppose wars. They have the power to create an Eco-friendly planet. Why don't they? Well, money is power and wars make the rich richer and hungry people are good religious fodder.

Further in America they own about $50 Billion in visible property holdings and about $507 Billion in hidden property holdings. Yet they have a strategy of deliberately sacrificing key services to the most disadvantage and poor of western communities.

To be continued...

" So, What Is Polyamory..?" 'Harmony Bentosino' (Harmonic Wednesday is back!) ;-)

Welcome back Dakinetalk's good friend 'Harmony!'
Harmony recently completed  her Masters degree in counseling.
Harmony  resides in Kapolei, Hawaii on the island of Oahu...
Harmony is a true free spirit as seen here swimming

with dolphins on the island of Oahu...Harmony blogs about her recent fate...

So, What Is Polyamory..?

Polyamory comes from the Greek and Latin words for many loves.  It is a romantic relationship that involves more than two people.

You mean like swinging?
No, swinging has a different focus.  Swinging is about recreational sex.  With polyamory, the focus is on deep relationships, although deep relationships can naturally lead to sex.

So you mean it’s like cheating with a girlfriend on the side?
No, with polyamory everyone involved is open and honest and has agreed to the relationship.  If you can’t invite your lover to Christmas dinner, then chances are the relationship is not polyamory.

So polyamory is for people who can’t commit?
No, just the opposite.  If you can’t commit to one person, how are you going to commit to two or more?  Many so called monogamous people actually practice something called serial monogamy which means they jump from one lover to the next while claiming to be monogamous with each one.  While no one expects every relationship to last forever, some serial monogamists believe relationships are expendable and will stay with one partner until something better comes along.  Or at the first sign of trouble, they will just bail.

Polyamory is a more ethical choice because polyamorists don’t discard an old partner when a new one comes along.  It reminds me of a song we used to sing around the campfire in Girl Scouts, “Make new friends, but keep the old.  One is silver and the other gold.”

But if you love someone, then you shouldn't want anyone else, right?
That’s a common idea, but it doesn't always hold up in practice. However, there are a minority of people who do successfully practice lifelong monogamy.

Many believe if you have multiple loves, then you can’t give your whole heart to one person, and that if you love more than one, your love is divided and not as deep.  But that is based on the scarcity model.  Love can behave in unpredictable ways.  It’s like the more you give, the more you have to give.  It is similar to having and loving more than one child.

Some think if you love one person and start to love someone else, then, you really didn't love the first person, but that goes back to the scarcity model which believes that in a world of six billion people, there is only one soul mate for each person.  Not too realistic.

The best way to make polyamorous relationships work is by following the rule.  Rules?  What rules?  If you want to sleep with someone, don’t you just sleep with them?
No, it doesn't work that way.

But of course, there are as many different varieties of polyamory as there are people. There is no one right way to practice it, although all poly relationships involve honesty, respect, and compassion.     .
But yes, there are rules.  What kind of rules?
There are polyfidelitous relationships which could involve a triad.  The triad could consist of two people having sex with one of the members, or it could mean all three having sex with each other.  The triad could decide it would be cheating for there to be sex outside of the triad.  Cheating is worse in polyamorous relationships because more than one person is betrayed.

There could be relationships outside of the triad if all members agreed on the particular person and if the outside person was aware of the relationships within the triad.
Individuals can also be polyamorous.

So isn't this all some sexist, misogynistic, male dominant, polygamist thing like that HBO show Big Love?

No, polygamy and polyamory are very different.  Polygamy involves one man married to many women.  Polyamory is not about marriage but about relationships (since group marriage is not legal).  The genders are egalitarian, and there is no one way to practice polyamory.  It could even be one woman with many partners.
Abstract artwork by Harmony!

Some people find polyamory so strange that it is easier for them to condone cheating than polyamory.  Which do you think is a better alternative?

There are many benefits to polyamory:
One can gain greater perspective, and there are more sources of support.  Also, it’s a wonderful way to add variety in your sex life!

There’s a downside:
It’s more complicated.  You need to be a good communicator on a personal level.  It’s harder for a group to come to a consensus than for just two people.

So, maybe this could actually work.  How do I get started?
There is a support group in Honolulu, which meets the second and fourth Thursdays, at 7:00 pm, at the First Unitarian Church, located at 2500 Pali Highway.  The group is called Pali-Paths.  Get the play on words?  This is not a place where you should expect to pick up a partner, but rather the group meets to discuss and offer advice on how to deal with various issues such as jealousy.

In polyamory, there is a word, compersion, which is the opposite of jealousy.  It means feeling happy for your partner when she or he finds a new lover.
There are many other online resources for information about polyamory, and for activities and supports groups in other parts of the country.

Harmony out demonstrating another
subject she feels passionate about!

The Aloha Vet,Now Imagine an Aloha MD
Dr. Scott Sims AKA The Aloha Vet tending to patients...

Look out Dog Whisperer and Cesar 911. In my opinion there is now a new number one TV show on Nat Geo wild!  The show features Kaua'i veterinarian Scott Sims in his own reality TV show called the 'Aloha Vet.'

All photos of Dr. Scott Sims
courtesy of  Nat Geo WILD.

Scott is followed by a team of cinematographers doing his daily routine without shoes. He is known as  the  barefoot vet to many and even as Dr. Dolittle to others.

Dr. Sims or as many call him Dr. Scott does it all.  He  operates on cancerous tumors,  castrates goats, reconstructs bladders, pulls horses teeth, operates on pig eyes right where they sleep, gives mouth to mouth to chickens and  also acts as the anesthesiologist to knock out the animals when they seem really hurt and need surgery

Scott fly's to Molokai, Maui , Oahu and Hawaii's Big Island on the show in an airplane he constructed from a kit to see patients and even operate in the middle of the night on his birthday.   Dr. Scott even clears and  mows his own runway before taking off.
Above photo of Dr. Scott Sims on horseback
courtesy of Nat Geo WILD.

Now imagine an Aloha M.D.? Your primary care physician doing  for you what Dr.Sims does for animals.  He's the radiologist, anesthesiologist, neurosurgeon, heart specialist, oncologist, dentist, eye doctor, proctologist and every other specialist in the books.

Seeing  Dr. Sims having fun making a prosthetic device for a dog was  poetic genius! Along with his book smarts, streets smarts and genius, all other vets seem to pale in comparison... Not only a great show but  a great man of passion in his field!

Imagine  a house call from your doctor and he decides to operate on the spot after X-raying and giving you an ultrasound right on the spot.

Nobody ever says my doctor's the worst, everyone always says my doctor's the best, however we all know some doctor must had graduated at the bottom of his class and just got by, it's the same for Veterinarians.   However Scott Sims really is the best.

Dr. Scott Sims swimming with sharks
courtesy of  Nat Geo WILD.

Scott says it's all out of love and passion. When Dr. Sims works on an animal that has little chance of survival and then survives it gives him what he calls  "The warm fuzzies."I am guessing this is where the term, "Lucky Dog" comes into play!

There is a popular meme on Scott's Facebook that says it all, "People ask what I do for vacation?" Scott replies, "I live it everyday.

I feel there is much for the medical profession to learn from Veterinarian science. A phrase that comes to mind is; "They shoot horses don't they?" Putting an animal out when there is no cure to what they have and to avoid suffering is the humane thing to do. I only wish the human medical profession was as
compassionate.

Mahalo to Dr. Sims  and his assistant's Dia and Ella for being there  for Kaua'i. Now the rest of the world knows the meaning 'Aloha.' One of the many reasons, "lucky we live Kauai."

Does anyone else besides me  get the warm fuzzies watching the show? Not only do I get the warm fuzzies, but to say the least, a star is born!
