"Imagine..." 'James 'Kimo" Rosen (A solution to traffic gridlock on Kauai)

James "Kimo" Rosen is a retired Professional photographer and publisher.
Rosen lives on the  beautiful Garden Island of Kaua'i with his best
friend Obama Da Dog. Rosen also posts the Sunrise daily on his Facebook Timeline.

Imagine

Imagine a solution to traffic gridlock on the Cosmic Garden Island?

Imagine driving from Kapa'a to Lihu'e in 10 minutes!

Imagine employing hundreds of people to construct a toll road!

Imagine the toll road creating many new jobs for maintenance and for toll collectors.

Imagine the toll road cutting or even eliminating  our county debt!

Just imagine...

A light-bulb went off in my head!  ;-)

Toll roads work until each drive way starts whining they are losing money.... Lets just build a bypass road and place toll gates at the few access points....connect the new Lihue (future) bypass to the Kapaa bypass with No residential or business drives intersecting. I know the first to complain would be the locals i.e.; just toll the visitors, drive them from the island with user fees.

Rick, There should definitely should be a Kamaaina discount. Local and Kamaaina could buy a years pass for a reasonable amount of money, Kupuna and student discounts too...

Not true, a quick Google showed, The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is waiving charges on several Texas toll roads for disabled veterans and recipients of the Purple Heart or Legion of Valor who display a specialty license plate. https://www.txtag.org/en/about/faq_veteran.shtml

Toll booths?? Actual toll booths on Kauai? Eeek! I'm not sure I am ready to see something like that out here...

KimoRosen said...

Toll booths only for those wanting an express way to Lihu'e from Kapa'a and vice verse. You would have the option of still taking the overcrowded Kuhio hwy for free...

Rick Comstock said...

Thanks Brandon I guess what your saying is we can't make it much worse.

But but but... I ALWAYS take the bypass to Lihue! How much would that wind up costing me?

we would name it? Toll Expressway your free Sam! But the fact as in all rural communities the location that you live at has cost, and the bus need not drive up to all farm house driveways for service. "Park and Ride"....Just like for us to go to the mainland it more than from there to here. Paradise has its price.

Maybe I'll just never leave home again. I'd actually be OK with that, except I might get a bit hungry...

Via Facebook,

"All I know is Mayor Carvalho and Planners really need to figure this out. Do you know how much these traffic issues cost local businesses and You as a customer. It adds up ! Some Bussinesses Charge extra for travel time because employees are stuck up to a hour sometimes in traffice. The bussinesses that can pass the rates onto your bill, do so. Example repair tech, and so on. All I know is I am very tired of wasting my time and gas sitting in traffic.. Mayor Carvalho you promoted the Island which is good for local bussinesses.. But you did not have a plan in place to handle the additional rental cars.. So you created a head ache for all the rest of us.. Hope you guys can figure this out."

All I know is that we need more roads before anything else is constructed. Everyday more new trucks and cars are sold, everyday a new driver becomes of age and every day more and moire visitors arrive needing to rent cars. I ride a bike at a snails pace and still pass car after car after car in Kapaa... It's overdue for more roads, since roads cost money, my idea was a toll road to help defray costs... Something needs to be done. There are only 235 miles of paved roads on Kauai... Same amount as in the 1960's.

Sam Uel Clemens said...

Something definitely needs to be done! And I do want to add that, as Michael has shared, I started charging more for my services due to the increased traffic. (All my competitors have done the same.)

Rick Comstock said...

Now who in the hell wants 1960 again.....yup! your right....stagnation in Kauais economy. Next they try to legislate "Pidgin" to help the kids learn. Failed 'state' of affairs for paradise....

The only way THAT is going to happen on Kauai, is that first of all, Kauai is going to have to raise the money itself and probably build it by itself. Otherwise, the rule of thumb in Hawaii is, all money wasted in Hawaii must be wasted on Oahu! And any money not wasted on Oahu must have at least 25% of waste built into the process with that wasted cash being transferred to Oahu with miscellaneous fees, taxes and/or regulation!
