"America divided on the exodus of Syrian Refugees..." 'Walter Lewis' (Special to dakinetalk)

Please welcome our newest guest-blogger, Mr. Walter Lewis,
“Walter  Lewis, a retired lawyer and former columnist
who resides in Lihu'e Hawai'i”
America divided on the exodus of Syrian Refugees

The exodus of Syrians from their country  in response to the dual threats of brutality of the Assad regime and the depravity of the ISIS caliphate has been huge. Over ten percent of the population has now fled the country. The humanitarian appeal for the plight of thee refugees is strong. Quite a number of articles and letters have appeared in our local paper soliciting approval of President Obama's call for allowing up to 250,000 people to immigrate to America.

The compassionate appeal is consistent with America's history. But today there are other factors that need to be considered.. In the past America has taken refugees from lands with depressed conditions. But never from a terrorist controlled  land  at war with us and threatening to bring death and destruction to our people. Because of the chaotic conditions in Syria, as American officials have confirmed, it is next to impossible to perform accurate vetting of the refugees  to try to assure that they are not being infiltrated by terrorist sympathizers who would be dangerous to our security.

Consistent with a poll of American voters which showed that a clear majority of Americans do not want to accept the Syrian refugees without assurance of their non-terrorist status the House adopted a Bill, with more than a quarter of Democrats in support calling for a deferral to the immigration sought by the President.
Bloomberg Politics Poll: Most Americans Oppose Syrian Refugee Resettlement

As usual it is better to take a second look at a cause that has inherent emotional appeal and evaluate objectively the risks which are involved.

Thank you Walter , Please continue to contribute to dakinetalk blog. BTW, I totally agree with your assessment of the refugee scenario...

Thank you, Walter. We are in agreement here. Wonderful response--and potential answer to this problem--in today's
Forum. Read Sam Monet's answer. I'm so torn. As one who cares deeply about mankind, I want to help; but my practical Scottish blood bristles. How in the world could we feed, house, employ all these people? We have homeless, impoverished Americans. Hungry, unemployed, desperate...

When I hear that most Muslims are good, but it's the bad, radicalized ones you got to really watch out for, that reminds me of the 80 /20 rule which states that 80% of a problems is caused by 20% of the people,.

KimoRosen said...

Yes but 20% is approximately 200 million people...

It's probably a smaller ratio in this case. I was just making an analogy. It's like doing something dangerous that has only a small risk of going wrong, but what if you are the one it goes wrong for? & also remembering that only a few terrorists acts can affect a relatively large # of people. And also remembering that all people matter even if only a few are hurt.

Thank you Kimo for letting us again read the fine writings of my friend Walter Lewis. I am sure your readers will enjoy his articles as much as I always have.

And Kimo, I had a good back and forth with Rick Comstock (I guess you saw it since I sent it back to you) and since he really supports the Manager type of government I am really happy to correspond with him. He had so many gripes with the way our county is being run and makes it all the easier to make the case for a Manager to take over.
Mahalo,
Glenn

Harmony, there is a very real difference here. If one is taught, from the git/go that to die as a martyr will get you--and your family--into paradise you have a different kettle of fish.

Bettejo Dux said...

Anyone for any reason--can strap a bomb to his back and blow himself up in a crowd. Anyone can pick up a weapon--a gun--and shoot into a crowd. I hope you see the difference. As for the 20/80 thin gee: remember it is not a class thing. How many people can one person kill? How many people can one leader? I, personally, think the instigators of this mess..George, Cheney, Wolfie and Rummy, should be tried in court for crimes against humanity. They are responsible for this mess. I will remind you, George said, "God told him to attack Iraq." That's sick....

We got a discussion going on here, Kimo? I hope so. Don't forget my 'cutie bettejo' Let's Talk Turkey in place tomorrow. It's a fable.Every once in while we must respond to a lighter side with an interesting message.

First, I have not seen this 250k number anywhere before. The President said 10k per year. Second, we're not vetting them in a war zone or while they're marching through the Balkans. The source is the 4 million in refugee camps in 5 different countries. The vetting takes place in the camps over the average time of 16 to 24 months according to the State Department (www.state.org). 750k refugees (not immigrants) vetted and processed in since 2001 without incident proves that the State Dept. has done a helluva good job!

If you want a quick, fact filled read about what the Syrian Refugees must go through before arriving and how the arrival works; go here:

Good article, however we can find fact filled articles to support whatever side were on. The beauty of Siri and Google! wink emoticon

Fair enough, so find me a fact filled article on how the US bound Syrian refugees from the UN Camps, not the overloaded boat refugees bound for Europe, pose any kind of threat to the US. Go ahead Kimo, I can wait forever (that's what it will take)!
