via Facebook;"Kimo, aside from the fact that WE ARE AMERICA and do not look to the North Koreans or Iranians for setting our humanitarian standards, your facts are not right.
A person who is not in this country lawfully can NOT get food stamps, welfare ...(TANF as the replacement of AFDC) or most benefits of any kind other than emergency medical treatment and education for their children (which is preferable to having them running loose on the streets).
All other benefits require proof of legal status.
As a professional interpreter, I have interpreted for many sessions with a variety of state and federal programs, I am familiar with the very stringent verification requirements.
Many people confuse the reality with the fact that illegal immigrants who have children BORN IN THIS COUNTRY have produced persons that are not only here legally, but have full U.S. Citizenship under the 14th Amendment."
Doug, The main point was that many who cross the US border illegally have it better off than crossing other country's borders illegally... yada yada yada...
via facebook;""Again, Kimo, some of the facts stated were in error and, while I would definitely agree that our country treats violators far more humanely than other nations, I don't see that as a weakness; I see it as a strength. Again, I don't look to North Korea or Iran for my standards on humane treatment."
via Facebook;"Doug, When was the last time you sat in line to get food stamps. I did and I was never asked to show proof of citizenship or that I was in this country legally. I was asked a question on a form to fill out if I was in this country legally. So think about it if you are here illegally why would you say on the form, to get food stamps, that you are here illegally so that you would not be eligible for them."
via Facebook;"John, I have never personally received welfare benefits.
However, in addition to my primary business of providing publishing services, I have also been (and still am) a certified sign language interpreter for almost 40 years and, among many varied and interesting venues and situations, I have interpreted in a variety of social service agencies, including Federal (SSA for SSI disability) and the Department of Social Services (for TANF, formerly known as AFDC, as well as food stamps and other welfare benefits) in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego Counties.
I have worked with scores of applicants and just as many case workers and they ALWAYS require proof of status, making photocopies of documents in a manner similar to an employer hiring a new worker under current requirements.
This is required by law.
I don't know what state/county you got your benefits in, or how long ago it was, but that is NOT the current status, certainly in Southern California."
via Facebook;"I received my benefits 3 months ago in LA County. I applied online and only had to stand in line to submit a copy of my driver license to show proof that I am living in LA County and the state of California. And the only reason I did that was because they had to be stamped and verified. I did put my SSN on the online form, along with the SSN's of my kids, that I filled out but do not have an actual social security card. I do not know where you filed but that was it for me. Besides I can go downtown and get an illegal but verifiable social security number and card to match if I want to spend the money to stay in this country illegally."
via facebook;"The fact is that we could argue this point forever and nothing will ever be done to stop it, which is the point that Kimo was trying to get across."
via facebook;"You provided a California Driver's license; you provided Social Security numbers that can be verified (more accurately than you seem to think). California Driver's licenses are currently evidence of legal status (not citizenship; there is a difference, and citizenship is not required, only legal status). You have supported my statements.
I have no doubt that welfare fraud occasionally occurs (though not nearly to the exaggerated extent its detractors portray), and fraudulent applicants who are caught, as with any crime, are punished.
The fact that some violations do occur does not alter the point of what the law requires. The law also prohibits robbery and murder, but these violations occur; it does not invalidate the point about the status of the law."
John and Doug, great debate! btw, John nice to hear from you, long time bruddah...
