"Online payments should warrant a discount..!" James "Kimo" Rosen'

"Why is the consumer penalized for paying their bill online with the phone company..?" This blog also appeared as an opinion article in the Kaua'i Garden Island news on 03-23-12 with the title," Why online payment charges?"
Hawaiian Tel-com, my local phone and Internet company charges $1.95 to pay your bill online, my cable company, Oceanic Time Warner charges nothing.
When a person pays online via a credit or debit card and receives a paperless electronic bill it saves quite a bit of money, quite a bit of time and is less work for both parties.  Why then,  would the phone company charge $1.95 to pay your bill online using their secure web-page and a pass-code? No operators would be involved, just a few simple clicks of the mouse.

There is no accountant that has to open an envelope, record a check, deposit a check and record the data on spread sheets.

People who pay electronically should not pay more than those mailing a check, or those standing in line to pay, it makes absolutely no sense.  The fact remains is those paying online should not be paying an additional fee, if anything  those paying  online and receiving paperless invoices  and not taking up an employee's time should be rewarded with a discount.

Douglas Dunn said via facebook;"Yikes! They CHARGE YOU to pay online?
I've never heard on any other company doing that!

That is totally insane.
Time to do like I did and ditch the landline and just have the iPhone only (or whatever other mobile phone you lik).
And my landline company (when I had it) didn't even charge for online bill pay!

That is insane!
They should allow a credit, a discount, for paying online because, as you noted, it saves them a ton of money!"

Yea, I just don't like cell phones, never did, never will. It's the principle of charging more for something that makes life easier and less expensive. I enjoy landlines, I hear better and and do not feel like I am on a leash like i do with a cell phone. If I was stuill running a biusiness, that would be another story.

Ioane I did not know that since electric is included in my rent, what's going on with these companies? Mahalo for the info!

A business facing competition could never get away with that unless they engaged in overt collusion, which is illegal."

Douglas Dunn said via facebook; "Seems like between outrageous electric rates, paying to save them money, and everything else, those living in paradise should have more incentive than anyone else to say, hey, we do have alternatives!

Electric: put up solar and wind and ge...t a biodiesel generator.
Go off the grid if you have to (that's my next goal...)

Phone: get a provider that doesn't charge to pay online.
Here in California, most cable providers also offer phone service. My suggestion is to check with your cable provider. You might pay less for the service itself, get better quality AND pay online without them punishing your for saving them money!"

Doug your right, the cable company does offer a package of phone, cable and internet, however I have a special rate for intenet of 19.95 for life, it was a promotion a few years back and have basic phone, which is no caller id, no voice mail, no long distance, since i use skype for long distance, the phone company just has better deals, but when it comes to payments they ripp you off... Chester, good idea, I will look into my bank doing auto payments, mahalo.!
