"Hallelujah Walmart..!" 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

Judith Roesch  gives out  samples of  Kaua'i coffee
at the Kaua'i Walmart store. Praise Walmart!

To all the letter writers  and bloggers who belittle Walmart, Why do 100 million Americans shop there every week? Is one third of the population so ignorant to realize Walmart is the devil incarnate as so many seem to indicate?  How is Walmart different from any company's desire to make a profit, or from an athletes desire to compete?

When Walmart opens shop in many parts of the country, the first people offered jobs are the ones that may be affected.  For example, the ma and pa hardware store that has struggled for years and barely makes ends meet maybe offered the job as manager of the hardware section,  most likely making a better living than they ever did struggling with their small business.

Walmart has the best return policies, 90 days no questions asked. Most stores if your lucky give you 30 days.

Walmart on Kaua'i is a meeting place for many to talk story at the McDonald's located within. One can actually buy local vegetable starts manufactured by a local Kaua'i nursery cheaper at Walmart than you can at the actual nursery.

Next to the federal government, the largest employer in America is Walmart. Walmart is the largest employer in Mexico and much of Latin America, as well.
Walmart is Kauai's fifth largest employer, without Walmart many more would be unemployed.

Why  are so many down on Walmart but  not down on other corporations  such as Safeway, Foodland, Times, K-mart, Long Drugs, Burger King, Starbucks, Panda Express, the list is endless?

It's your right to boycott Walmart, but it's also Walmart's right to strive for perfection in a competitive marketplace.
The stores I boycott are the stores and restaurants overcharging with rude clerks, and on Kaua'i that is pretty easy to find.

I say a big mahalo nui to to Walmart worldwide for providing us with one stop shopping featuring aloha and great savings.  Hallelujah and Praise Walmart!

Check out my opinion article in  the (07-20-12) edition of the  Kaua'i Garden Island News, "What's so bad about Walmart..?" It's the same article as this blog, enjoy!http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-friday-july/article_1f122aac-d242-11e1-9aef-0019bb2963f4.html

People will complain about anything, Walmart creates millions of jobs and saves people many many more millions so they can buy more things in life. One of the arguments was Walmart did not give all their part-time employees health, well any other store would do the same thing. People were upset because part-time wal-mart employess were filing for medicare, however so do part time, k-mart, Safeway, Longs, you name it.

I think of Costco where i shop. The employes are smiling, happy,... helpful they have a good health plan. Vacation time. They are treated well and it shows. At Walmsrt al you meet are sullen, unhappy faces. Your letter should appear in the forum. You should come in to the discussion site. Don't let it die. They can't call you names and insult you now, KIMO. Love'ya"

Oh, I don't know...because they pay starvation wages and sell products made in China by slave labor?
Or, it could be something else....

KimoRosen said...

If all jobs payed the same there would be no incentive to better oneself financially...

Ken Landfield said...

No one's arguing that they're a very large, very wealthy corporation.
Perhaps they would be more appreciated if they appreciated their employees more. I can't speak for all of them, but I believe many of the corporations you list do take better care of their employees. Walmart's CEO earns $16,826.92 an hour. An hour!

Ken Landfield said...

Jim, you can't possibly believe that's a valid argument for paying wages so low that employees need my tax dollars for food stamps which they qualify for even being employed fulltime?

Ken Landfield said...

Your tax dollars too, buddy. You feel good subsidizing a guy who makes $16K/hour?

KimoRosen said...

all discount stores do the same...did you read my blog?

Ken Landfield said...

I did read it. And I don't think you're correct in that all discount stores do the same. I'm just trying to answer your question. I haven't researched each of the corporations you listed, nor am I likely to take the time to do so (though you may choose to); but Walmart's has a reputation for being cutthroat in regard to the quality of their merchandise (it might be interesting to discover what percent of their merchandise is manufactured in this country) as well as paying the lowest possible wages with the least possible benefits. If it is your intent to prove otherwise, feel free. If you want to know why some people are "down" on Walmart, which I think was your question, well, I think you have your answer. Safeway takes a lot better care of their employees than Walmart, which isn't to say they too couldn't improve. Doesn't it bother you that you, personally, are paying with your taxes to help feed Walmart employees because the richest family on the planet doesn't feel a need to pay a living wage?

Rick Comstock said...

doesn't matter how many people they employ, it's how many people we help Walmart employ. More research is suggested, Start comparing like with like....Costco.... benefits included, then you will stop rewrite your column.....

Sam Rose said...

Very interesting piece on Marketplace on NPR/PRI on this subject. A good percentage of Walmart employees qualify for food stamps. They are grateful for a job but... http://www.marketplace.org/.../wea.../secret-life-food-stamp

Sam Rose said...

They are also one of the biggest redeemers of food stamps.

Rick Comstock said...

This is also part of the wage disparity within some corporations. Will $16K per hour ever be enough for these people. This is why a raise in the minimum wage does not put pressure on a price of a burger. With a higher wage it's proven to lower dependency on food stamps and increase all economic issues the world benefits so much and our limited taxes are secured for public projects feeding the engine to prosperity.

Rick Comstock said...

This is why what Kimo blogs help stimulates thought and action without pissing in public. That is why we need him and his opinions printed in the TGI. We all don't need to totally agree but we use respect while giving and receiving.

KimoRosen said...

Mahalo Rick! Stay tuned for Monday's column, I think it will silence my critics because it's a feel good article, at least that's what I think...
