"Free shock treatment on Kauai,..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen
Kauai Island Utility Cooperative is the most expensive electricity in America, which can make ones hair stand on end....
Electricity on Kauai is so expensive, over 40 cents a kilowatt that toasting marshmallows over your electric range can cost more than the bag of marshmallows....
It is said that electricity can make your hair stand on end when shocked.
I am shocked by KIUC,(Kauai Islands electric company) a member owned cooperative. This member owned cooperative makes my hair stand on end. (as you can see, above) ;D)
It was recently divulged after much fanfare what our member owned cooperative pays for rent in it's current location across from Kukui Grove shopping center.
One of the reasons Kaua'i has one of the highest electric rates in the country at over 40 cents a kilowatt hour is this member owned cooperative pays approximately $90,000 a month rent! I would hope that includes electric? That means just for rent we are paying over one million a year. I would think that common sense might tell you after 5 years you could by prime real estate and erect your own building...
Talk about electricity causing shock, you don't need a psychiatric diagnosis for shock treatment on Kauai, KIUC supplies it to us all for free with our monthly bill.

The higher the local electric rate, the stronger the argument for going solar.
Let the sun shine!
I had to look up ours. We pay 2.7 cents a kilowatt hour. And the PUD funds the most beautiful parks here. We are incredibly lucky to have that
when you had monopoly ,watch da rates go up,Hawaii sitting on free, wind, sun, ocean & thermo energy, use them.
actually our kilowatt hour is closer to 45 cents a kilowatt hour. Plus this company that calls itself a COOP pays 90,000 a month rent... WTF
Hmmm. Follow the money
Now tell me the rental property is owned by one or two of the board members and I'll be reminded I still live on Kauai.
Rick, I am betting that could be true? Stay tuned!
So as I read the KUIC publication called "Currents" I was amazed how a non-profit used our money to donate to other non-profits and scholarships. As I love community a $125,000.00 just might be distributed back to the coop as the business coop model is suppose to do. Lets see...maybe the rate would be 36 cents an hour as it is reported currently to be 38. I guess the more they save the more we can afford to give in name of the board members. A big thank you to the coop owners (us) should be the minimum in the article. Stating KUIC has given is like saying, Walmart has given. Should be the ratepayers for KUIC have given. Then the direct honesty would have arrived.
