Who is Chester Nimitz..? 'Sue Siegel' (source)

"Chester Nimitz a true American hero. The major thoroughfare in Honolulu Hawaii is named Nimitz road, which cuts into the Nimitz highway.  Thank G-d for men like admiral Nimitz..." The source of this story is Sue Siegel..
Really interesting, especially for those of us who live in Hawai'i or have a love for the Hawai'i aina. (land) I never knew this little bit of history:

Tour boats ferry people out to the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii every thirty minutes. We just missed a ferry and had to wait thirty minutes. I went into a small gift shop to kill time. In the gift shop, I purchased a small book entitled, "Reflections on Pearl Harbor" by Admiral Chester Nimitz.

Sunday, December 7Th, 1941--Admiral Chester Nimitz was attending a concert in Washington D.C. He was paged and told there was a phone call for him. When he answered the phone, it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on the phone. He told Admiral Nimitz that he (Nimitz) would now be the Commander of the Pacific Fleet.

Admiral Nimitz flew to Hawaii to assume command of the Pacific Fleet. He landed at Pearl Harbor on Christmas Eve, 1941. There was such a spirit of despair, dejection and defeat--you would have thought the Japanese had already won the war. On Christmas Day, 1941, Adm. Nimitz was given a boat tour of the destruction wrought on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Big sunken battleships and navy vessels cluttered the waters every where you looked.

As the tour boat returned to dock, the young helmsman of the boat asked, "Well Admiral, what do you think after seeing all this destruction?" Admiral Nimitz's reply shocked everyone within the sound of his voice. Admiral Nimitz said, "The Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could ever make, or God was taking care of America. Which do you think it was?”

Shocked and surprised, the young helmsman asked, "What do mean by saying the Japanese made the three biggest mistakes an attack force ever made?”

Nimitz explained:

Mistake number one:
The Japanese attacked on Sunday morning. Nine out of every ten crewmen of those ships were ashore on leave. If those same ships had been lured to sea and been sunk--we would have lost 38,000 men instead of 3,800.

Mistake number two: When the Japanese saw all those battleships lined in a row, they got so carried away sinking those battleships, they never once bombed our dry docks opposite those ships. If they had destroyed our dry docks, we would have had to tow every one of those ships to America to be repaired. As it is now, the ships are in shallow water and can be raised. One tug can pull them over to the dry docks, and we can have them repaired and at sea by the time we could have towed them to America. And I already have crews ashore anxious to man those ships.

Mistake number three: Every drop of fuel in the Pacific theater of war is in top of the ground storage tanks five miles away over that hill. One attack plane could have strafed those tanks and destroyed our fuel supply. That's why I say the Japanese made three of the biggest mistakes an attack force could make or God was taking care of America.

I've never forgotten what I read in that little book. It is still an inspiration as I reflect upon it. In jest, I might suggest that because Admiral Nimitz was a Texan, born and raised in Fredericksburg, Texas --he was a born optimist. But anyway you look at it--Admiral Nimitz was able to see a silver lining in a situation and circumstance where everyone else saw only despair and defeatism.
President Roosevelt had chosen the right man for the right job. We desperately needed a leader that could see silver linings in the midst of the clouds of dejection, despair and defeat.

There is a reason that our national motto is, IN GOD WE TRUST .

Advocating Congress to the Front line with the troops ...." Chester "Unc" Lau'

Chester "Unc" Lau  a retired cinematographer  living his golden years on the island of Oahu  is back guest-blogging about his views on who should fight our wars. "Unc" usually has a good joke for us, however today he speaks seriously from his heart. Chester also served as a master sergeant in the Korean war and is fond of the naturist Lifestyle!
Mandate moving war advocating Congress to the Front line with the troops .

I SALUTE all our military for their services in our wars & in particular the two endless wars in Iraq & Afghanistan since March 2003 & on going.
I DETEST the war profiteers who risk our lives for private gains. What has the US gained after years of senseless wars in Iraq & Afghanistan? Still saddled with  on going wars with endless daily casualties & bankrupting our treasury !!! Yes,we need to mandate that Congress & the WAR advocates be deployed to the front line in any wars to lead the charges ahead of the night Infantry patrols or pick up week old battle remains !!!
An equal opportunity of wars for all to participate. To stop useless wars,we need to initiate a military draft like Switzerland that All citizens must participate for national defense only, but not for invading other countries unless they attacked us first That should stop old men whom make wars that young men die syndrome,"speak softly but carry a big stick !!!"

When timid little Germans did not stop Hitler from persecuting & killing of Jews & minorities, they created WW2,when the little US sheep did little to stop the GW Bush's lies on Iraq's WMD,The US is paying with the lives of our beloved military &  bankrupting our treasury (your & my taxes) by the armchair thugs in Washington,to save what we still have ,we have the resolve, brain power, technical skills and entrepreneurship to revitalize our economy & leadership in the world with Peace & tolerance...

We need to act to save our democracy,we were once the best that the world looked up to and we can do it again with EDUCATION ,a strong military & resolve, wake up,little sheep or go the way of almighty Rome, even China won't buy the US  with our problems.
We need to DO & mandate accountability by our public servants, they are Not our bosses ...Cut out Air Force One ,Secret Service & the perks,if public servants are honest & work for peace & the people, they don't need Secret Service  protection from the Tax paying voters .
Vive l'Amérique, and hope that France & the marquis de La Fayette will help us again.  We can end any war with terrorists or dictators, just send in the Special Forces or The US Navy Seals !!!  Bang !!! Bang !!! Finish !!!  Pau !!!

ALOHA FRIDAY

May 4, 2012Ó

It's Aloha Friday.

You're what?  How did that happen?

Aloha folks.
I was ruminating in bed last night.  No, not fumigating!  Fumigating means killing the bedbugs . . . and means you got to lift the bed-covers and flap them around a bit.
Ruminating means thinking.  Which is what I was doing.
And I got to thinking about procreation.  How many of you out there got married and had a baby within your first year of marriage?  Show of hands please.  Now, if you're over 60, keep your hand up.  Everyone else, hands down.
Aha, I knew it.  Most over-60 couples did just that.  Got married, said "Fire the torpedoes, full speed ahead," and out popped a cute little baby before they got to their first anniversary.
Two reasons for that.  One, birth control pills were not as available back then.  And, two, most couples held off on having full sex until after they were married.  (lots of heavy petting though)  So they didn't talk about things such as birth control, or having kids.  Except in the most blissfully innocent way.  (white picket fence around a little house in the country with children playing in the backyard without getting dirty)
Actually, another reason for many Catholics was the Church's disapproval of all forms of birth control.  Except for coitus interruptus.  And that wasn't a very practical choice for two young people who were finally experiencing actual sex.  ("Okay, Tom, pull out."  "Sorry, Suzie, too late.")
So now, it seems to me that people wait longer to get married.  And frequently they live together first . . . and have sex.  But they practice better birth control.  (unless the woman is tired of waiting for a ring and decides to put more pressure on the man)
All of which means that fewer couples are celebrating their first anniversaries by bouncing a baby on their knees.
Good or bad?  I don't know.  Just a change in the way things are.

Okay folks, see you next week.

"The Costco dining experience..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen

"Kaua'i is very expensive, most fast food restaurants charge almost  two dollars for a soft drink, at Costco outdoor cafe you can buy a quarter pound plus hot-dog and refillable  soft drink for less than  what a soda cost's at most restaurants..."

Costco outdoor cafe in Lihue is  still the place  to go for an inexpensive  meal on the cosmic island of Kaua'i. No membership card is asked for at the outdoor cafe, so anyone, even non-members line up in the never ending lines on a daily basis.
Where else can you get a 100% 1/4 lb plus beef frank and a refillable drink for 1.50, or a chicken Caesar salad with enough volume to feed  three for $3.99. Pizza slices the size of about 2 normal slices of pizza for less than 2 bucks, ice cream sundaes for a fraction of what you pay anywhere else and 3 times as large.

Costco outdoor cafe is the place to go especially if you are a young family wanting to go out to eat, where else can a family of  6 go out and eat a meal for under ten bucks?

Although  Costco  outdoor cafe has still not grasped the concept of roped of lines as Banks and most fast food restaurants employ where the next person goes to the next available ordering window.

All things considered  Costco outdoor cafe is still the best bang for your dining out experience, just have patience in case you pick the wrong line and the person in front of you happens to be  ordering for the tour bus in the parking lot.

"Garden Art..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesdays)

Guest-blogger Bettejo Dux is one of Kauai's most colorful people, she has lived on the cosmic island of Kaua'i for over 40 years... She is an animal lover, people lover and enjoys life to the fullest.Today she guest blogs about  "Garden Art" and how she has a 'brown thumb!' Enjoy... She also  publishes her own blog column.

You can check it out at ;  http://www.bettejo.wordpress.com   Besides her blog she recently published and authored the humorous fiction book, "The Scam," check it out at(www.bettejodux.com) or  on Amazon.

You'd have to see my jungle/house/barn- my land- to understand my delightful delve into the garden art.
It's an art form I made up, I think. It isn't gardening, I have a brown thumb, almost anything I plant goes belly up. But jungle plants and weeds and green living things that thrive and flourish on their own take to my jungle/house/barn and land like it was the mother breast of  land on which they were suckled...

Guys at NTBG have told me my Elephant ears are probably the largest on Kauai. This guy, sitting in my 'jungle' room said he felt as though he was in a Honduran rain forest. Years ago I took some pictures and my husband said it looked like a house buried in the jungle. He should see it now. Outside wants inside and about fourteen vacuum cleaners have bit the dust. Brooms, rakes, and garden shears-.big garden shears-keep the rooms, galleries and hallways open to human habitation. My kitchen is a green house. my bathroom, open air and the room next to my bedroom which started out to be an aviary is now home to a Banyan hung with Spanish Moss.

I love the African Tulip, flame of the forest, fountain tree delight that many on Kaua'i consider a pest. It does proliferate and very soon a dense grove of these lovely creatures blind the eye if you're driving through one. The road to Lihue, this year, is thick with them. When my land is strewn with these gloriously bright orange blossoms I'm smitten. Captivated, raptured, enchanted, bewitched  and seduced. Walking through them, watching them lift and fall in glorious color as I pass. As a breeze passes. As a bird passes. Or a horse or a dog or a rooster gallops, galumphs, or bird-walks  trough their magical wind strewn  carpet.

Here, on my small slice of paradise on paradise island I am very rich in leaves and blossoms falling from the sky, or at least from the trees that touch the sky. They cover the ground like Mougli's  security blanket and come into the house like welcome guests.

"Fly United..." 'Obama Da Dog' (Source)

Many Thanks to 'Obama Da Dog' for taking time out of her busy day to share with you a recent story she read on the Internet!  ;D)

Fly United  !!!

A musician named Dave Carroll recently had difficulty with United Airlines.
United apparently damaged his treasured Taylor guitar ($3500) during a
flight. Dave spent over 9 months trying to get United to pay for damages
caused by baggage handlers to his custom Taylor guitar. During his final
exchange with the United Customer Relations Manager, he stated that he was
left with no choice other than to create a music video for YouTube exposing
their lack of cooperation. The manager responded: “Good luck with that one, pal.”

So he posted a retaliatory video on YouTube. The video has since received
over 6 million hits. United Airlines contacted the musician and attempted
settlement in exchange for pulling the video. Naturally his response was:
“Good luck with that one, pal.”

Taylor Guitars sent the musician 2 new custom guitars in appreciation for
the product recognition from the video that has led to a sharp increase in orders

"New age Washing machines..."'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Monday)

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years..." She talks about new age Washing machines with all the bells and whistles...:

NEW AGE WASHERS & ADVANCES IN MODERN TECHNOLOGY...

It has been 35 years since I have had to replace my washing machine…it is vintage all right.  It weighs a ton, made of heavy metal and shakes the room when it spins.  I decided to break down and buy a new one since it no longer spins fast enough to wring out the clothes and makes the poor dryer,  that is also an oldie, spin for 1-2 hours just to dry the clothing.

So I decided to explore the world of new age washing machines.  First of all, they look nothing like the one I had been using.  That old workhorse was obsolete in style and fashion.  What really opened my eyes was the new age prices that went along with the machines.  They had some with so many buttons on them,   it would take a  hour to read the manual  every  time a load of wash was to be done.  All I wanted was a simple, easy machine to use that just washed the clothing efficiently.  After much deliberation, I think we found the perfect one.  It was white, not a fancy color that was much more money, and had the least amount of buttons to push. It met all my criteria and it was on sale which was at the top of the list.
Although I felt bad when they hauled the old one outside, I was able to get over it after a few loads of wash with my new machine.  Not only does my new washer spin at warp speed but it is quiet as it spins and we can still talk while it is in operation.  It uses much less water and gets the clothing much cleaner.  I think we made a good decision….now to think about what kind of dryer to investigate.  It is living on borrowed time as well, but is still hanging on.
