GOOD FRIDAY ?

The last time we saw our mythical hero, the guy whose Momma proclaimed him the son of god, he was riding triumphantly into Jerusalem on a donkey preceded by a bunch of hippie friends tossing palm leaves before him.

I hope they were also mouthing make-believe trumpet sounds and tossing fragrant flowers at his feet.

Sadly, this funny put- on turned nasty. Fast. According to the story some bad Temple Guards, helped along by a traitorous disciple-he had twelve, one of whom was a woman-turned him in for 30 piece of silver and our hero was arrested.

Here begins a really terrible part of the story. Our poor hero is found guilty of blasphemy and another of his disciples, Peter, of the rock and shoes of the fisherman Popish fame, denies him, too.

We move on with all kinds of awfulness. Flogging by the Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate, who, later, washes his hands of the whole business. Pilate declares our hero to be innocent but, for political reasons, turns him over to a bunch of Roman thugs to be crucified.
Now crucifixion is an absolutely horrible way to die-and we’ll talk about that later- because, at the moment, our hero is being marched through town dragging a heavy wooden cross, wearing a crown of thorns-the town’s people throwing rotten eggs and stuff-and ends up nailed to the cross he’s carrying…

…What kind of nightmare writer wrote this Grimm’s Fairy Tale anyhow?
Even worse, let’s roll time out a bit, some religious folks today have kept our poor hero hanging in effigy  for over two thousand years! In their rites on this day, in some neck of the woods, they even reenact the story. Carry crosses. Walk the walk.

In my neighborhood, in a church- goers parking lot, there is a huge white marble-well, it looks, like marble- statue of our hero on the cross with his Mommy, his brother, the son of the old Carpenter we may assume, and his girl friend and disciple, Mary Magdalene, at his feet. Every time I drive by, it hangs there 24/7, I want to drive in and physically haul him down.

Do you know how one dies of crucifixion?  Your feet are nailed to a board, your hands are nailed to the cross beam. Your feet start to hurt, the nails, remember, so you lift yourself up with your arms and your hands start to hurt. When your hands hurt, you put your weight in your feet. Unbelievable agony and it can go on for days.  Fortunately a Roman soldier comes along and saves the day, our hero does not die of Crucifixion….

…But before this it is written that our poor suffering hero looks down at the figures below and says, “Woman behold thy son. Brother behold thy mother.”

That says it all, don’t you think? I mean, it’s a pretty clearly stated summation of the entire affair and this, dear readers, is the expurgated story of Good Friday (?).  Sounds like a perfectly dreadful way to spend a Friday afternoon to me. To be continued…

"Rest in Peace..." "Obama da Dog"

"Obama da Dog discusses the expression 'Rest in peace,' and wishes everyone to rest in peace!"
Rest in peace is an expression we say  of the dead. We may say, "may so and so rest in peace," after they have expired their life on earth.

I believe it is a phrase that should be used on the living. instead of  saying goodnight or what's happening why not say "rest in peace?"

When  someone is  tired we should be able to say in 'rest in peace.' Instead of saying sweet dreams, good night, see you in the morning, why not say rest in peace?

In the near future  we will examine the phrase 'Have a good one' until that time rest in peace and have a good one.

"Advances on modern science..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspirational Monday)

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years..." She talks about the modern day invention of electric garage doors...

Advances on modern science

It only took 38 years for us to get an electric garage door opener; I guess we never saw the need. Someone’s car was always stored in the garage and we didn’t open and close it very much. Now that my husband and I are adding a few more birthday candles to the cake, losing my young sons’ brute strength along with the hernias we have…it seemed like a good idea to get some help opening the 2 ½ car garage insulated heavy door.

It is amazing that such a simple tool can invoke so much happiness! We are so delighted each time we need to move a car or get something from the garage that we seem to find an excuse to open the door now. It’s surely the little things that count, isn’t it.

"Kama'aina, really now..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

"Kama'aina rates are often times not the best rates you can receive..." This blog was published as an opinion article in the 04-22-12 edition of the  Kaua'i Garden Island news titled;"Kama'aina get your discount."  http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-sunday-april/article_f589817a-8c6a-11e1-a3e9-001a4bcf887a.html
Many people in Hawai'i are bestowed a Kama'aina  rate for discounts to many businesses . If you can show a local driver's license or another form of local Hawai'ian ID. For those not from Hawai'i, Kama'aina is the Hawai'ian language word for long term resident, the literal translation is child of the land. Many Hawai'i based  businesses give  Kama'aina rates and many people believe this is the best rate possible and is the rate they ask for when reserving hotel rooms, theatre tickets, car rentals, etc.

There are many rates better than kama'aina. There are many organizations that offer huge discounts  such as AARP, Costco, AAA, and for those over 55 there is usually a  senior discount available, and for those 12 and under many restaurants have huge savings.  If you own a business or are a business person you  may also  be offered a business discount  at times even  lower  than a Kama'aina rate.

Kama'aina may sound and have the feel of  the best rate, but don't be embarrassed  to ask for an even better rate. I am betting you'll be surprised.

ALOHA FRIDAY
March 30, 2012

It's Aloha Friday.

Where Truth Lies

Aloha folks.
It seems we have our own little version of the Japanese classic Rashomon in the news lately. Have you read the story, or seen the movie version? In brief, a bandit kills a husband and rapes the man's wife. But when the local magistrate investigates he gets three slightly different stories. One from the bandit. One from the wife. And one from the ghost of the dead man. At the end it is left up to us, the audience/reader, to determine who is telling the truth. Or what the truth there might be in each story.
Now, here's our own newest version of this classic story.
A young man down in Florida went to a store one night. On the way home another young man saw the first young man and thought he looked suspicious. The second young man called the police and voiced his suspicions. Despite being told to stay where he was he got out of his vehicle and began to follow the first young man. Minutes later the first young man lay dead. And here is where this story begins to sound like Rashomon. The second young man says the first young man jumped him, hit him in the nose, and slammed his head against the ground. He admits he shot the first young man and killed him. A girl who was on the phone with the first young man heard sounds of a scuffle. A witness, or two, now says that he saw the second young man on the ground. Others say they heard a cry, but whether it was from the young man who was shot or from the young man who shot him they can't say.
There has been talk about the second young man muttering racist comments into his phone while approaching the first young man. There has been note made of the fact that the first young man was tall and strong. That the first young man was wearing a 'hoodie' seems to figure into this whole matter in some way.
The only facts that are apparent from this whole incident are that one young man, carrying a gun, killed another young man who had done nothing wrong up to the time that the second young man confronted him and questioned his right to be walking in that neighborhood.
For now we have only the young shooter's account to go by. We have no ghost to tell us a different story.
Thus, as in Rashomon, we are left to determine where the truth lies. But truth and lies are so frequently intertwined.
Okay folks, see you next week.

"Living obituaries..." 'Obama Da Dog'

"Life is short, say nice things about others while they're still alive..." Don't wait to read about a friend's death in the daily obituaries, say nice things while your friends are still alive and kickin..."
I recently received in my email in-box a forwarded message from a friend, it stated;" How many flowers are sent to a person when he or she expires and how many flowers did he or she receive alive? A dead nose can't smell a rose."

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we looked at our friends and relatives and told them the stories we would tell at their funeral, but instead tell them while their still breathing?

Our lives are not video recordings, we cannot reverse and edit and make up for our mistakes and regrets.

Write or say  something nice for a friend that is still living, instead of waiting to tell how great a person they were at their funeral. Say something nice to your friends and relatives directly, while they're still alive.

Obituaries are 99%  positive, if only we treated each other with such do respect while we're alive.

Why not pretend your best friend, partner, sibling, neighbor or co-worker just passed away and tell them to their face the thoughts you have! Living obituaries, wouldn't that be awesome!

For everyone reading this, these imaginary roses are for you.
