Maybe it's time the farmers market's became Farmers Market's plus more..? |
In response to the recent article in the Kauai Garden Island News, "Farmers (only) Markets,(http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/article_5bf68a2e-02d8-11e1-97d9-001cc4c03286.html ) the article states that many vendors sell produce that was not grown on their own farms or gardens and are selling produce purchased from wholesalers which was not the original criteria for farmers markets on Kaua'i.
There are also those people that sell fish, chicken eggs, and even discounted potato chips and other closeouts from the supermarkets just outside the farmers market's. Locals sell their Ahi from their pickup beds just outside the market too.
Many rules are broken with vendors selling produce that is not from their farms or gardens, however in these recessed times if somebody can make a few extra bucks in the 90 minute time-frame they have, go for it! The article states that it takes many hours and a court date to even enforce the policy of the farmers market and there just isn't the manpower to enforce the rules.
Maybe it's time for the farmers market's to expand and make rule changes allowing more items for sale? And if some vendor happens to sell pickled Mangoes, chili pepper water or even produce they bought from a wholesaler it's time to turn the other cheek and not report your neighbor.

Best quality, freshest product, lowest prices, and it all goes to the "little guy" -- the farmer who actually grew it!"
