"Mahalo Nui to Oahu Publications..." 'Obama Da Dog'

Mahalo Nui Loa to Oahu Publications
for keeping our local newspaper alive...

Extra Extra, Read All About It...

Mahalo Nui to Oahu Publications for rescuing The Garden Island  newspaper from a possible bankruptcy and potential financial meltdown. It's sad that many TGI employees lost their jobs, but it's also a blessing that everyone didn't lose their jobs, which very easily could had been a reality if Oahu Publications had not come to the rescue.

The Publishing business has been struggling with the advent of the internet and all the free websites and blogs to chose from. Many papers have ceased printing altogether and are totally electronic with pay walls. The  New Orleans only daily newspaper  the Times-Picayune's new reality is an online-focused newsroom and  only prints a hard-copied newspaper  3 days a week. Remarkably and in contrast The Garden island news still has six days of hard-copied news.

Kaua'i is blessed to have Oahu publications care enough to keep our cosmic daily paper alive. Please continue to support your local paper in whatever way you can, either purchasing an electronic or hard-copied subscription or by placing ads.

Aloha Kakou and  Mahalo Nui Loa to Oahu Publications.

Since the sale and the layoffs there is no comments monitor for those who wish to comment therefore why not send the people who want to comment to Garden Island newspaper Facebook page, of course they will have to like you first, which gives the paper your identity. With all the layoffs this would be an easy way to accommodate comment addicted readers....

Sucking up to get your LTE's published enough, Kimo? If TGI had filed bankruptcy, local interests could have purchased it for a song, and would have.

It's naive to say OPI saved TGI. TGI was profitable up until OPI's Midweek came along and stole the national advertisers and insert advertisers by using discounts for also being in the Star-Advertiser. OPI didn't care if Midweek made a profit, so they kept ad rates low enough to pull enough ads from TGI to force them into almost-bankruptcy and therefore an easy buyout.

The way OPI handled the buyout, and their changing the first article they had power over so it didn't make them look so bad, show what we now have, and it's not good.

Chuck, of course a new owner doesn't wanted to look bad...If you just put out 2 million would you want the cover the first front page article about you to be negative? I am grateful somebody with large pockets took over to hopefully make it better than ever!

Chuck Lasker via Facebook,"For the publisher to change content because of their interests is against every form of journalistic ethics. I suppose you will be fine when they edit news about major advertisers and their friends in the statehouse, yes? The wall between the news desk and management should be 10 feet thick, and even before they took over they broke down that wall. Sure that wall was gone under Casey, the ex-ad-salesperson, but continuing the policy of zero journalistic integrity is not cause for celebration."

Chuck, I was in the publishing business for many years and in my opinion TGI made a great move... Did you know In new Orleans the daily Newspaper only prints 3 days a week? TGI still prints six days a week. As far as the publishing business is concerned everyone scratches the backs of their advertisers, just a fact.

Chuck Lasker via facebook, "Too bad you're so cynical. It bodes ill for the island. I hope others aren't so complacent about the manipulation of local "news." And apparently you either didn't read my comments, or just believe naively that TGI tanked because of "the Internet" or other excuse, not because OPI specifically attacked it in order to buy it."

KimoRosen said...

OK, I get it your not happy with the purchase, I am, so be it. "These Times they are a Changin..."

If the advertisers were not pealed off for Midweek its quite apparent the depressed sale would not have happened. Now that the Midweek upper personal are siting back in the drivers seat at TGI, the manipulation will continue for the profitable off island opportunists. Even though when this occurred on Oahu and 430+ people lost out to the same MO. To offer the upscale printing advantage to all to allow the press to pay for itself is one thing, but to increase your printing presses thirst by using this MO, sucks! The paper does look beater but printing the first page of the want ads on the last page, shows poorly, and I could go on..but!.....And Mr. Rosen my wife already knows who her Daddy is."
