“The earth should not be injured! The earth must not be destroyed! As often as the elements of the world are violated by ill-treatment, so nature will cleanse them. Nature will cleanse them through the sufferings and hardships of humankind. All of creation was given to humankind to use. But if this privilege is misused, then nature’s justice permits creation to punish humanity.”
This warning from the 12th century — edited a bit — is as true today as it was then.
Thousands of aquifers have been poisoned and depleted in this country. We are depleting and destroying aquifers on Oahu. On Kauai. There are dozens of toxic dump sites currently leaking poisons into the land and the sea.
Meanwhile, trillions of dollars have been spent on military research and equipment to destroy life and living things. A better use might be for the defense department to defend the soil, the water, and the air.
Humankind — even those of us on Kauai — cannot live without water. Or land. Or food. Or fresh air.
May I suggest those of you who prefer concrete, cars, exhaust, overcrowding — more highways, more subdivision, more hotels eating up land, fouling water — take a moment, just a moment, look in the mirror — to contemplate this dilemma.
Kauai can be saved. Maybe our legislators, lawmakers, politicians, developers, might be better off giving top consideration to the soil, the water, and the air rather than the pursuit of profit.
Think about it.
