Mayoral race to be a cliffhanger

Kauai is blessed to have two candidates competing for the mayor-ship, each possessing wisdom, comprehension and knowledge of our cosmic island.
Both candidates currently running for mayor are serving on
the Kauai county council. Mel Rapozo is the chairman of the council and is
third from the left. Derek Kawakami is second from the right. Good luck to both!

Anybody else thinking of entering the race, their odds of political success are much greater on the County Council side, since both men must relinquish their current status on council to run for mayor, therefore opening up two seats.
Derek Kawakami, Miss Kauai  and
Mel Rapozo  back in 2013...
May the best man win!

Both these men were the top three vote-getters during the last council race, Derek Kawakami coming in first with 15,990 votes, and Mel Rapozo coming in third with 12,631 votes. Should anybody else decide to run against them they will have a run for their money. For the record, Arryl Kaneshiro came in second with 12,779 votes.

Many Kauai people including yours truly are friends with both Derek Kawakami and Mel Rapozo. How do we vote? This race is sure to be a cliffhanger.

Many of us will not come out publicly because of this, or people will lie, people will become the politician (Joke, because politicians are usually the liars). When speaking with Mel, we will tell him, you’ve got our vote, likewise when talking story with Derek, you’ve got my vote!

I only ask, don’t make this a popularity contest. Vote for the person you think will be a better mayor, not necessarily the person who has the better hand wave, better smile, or bought you the more expensive lunch.

Coconut wireless rumor has it
our Mayor is going
to run for Governor
after his term limits expire!

OK, here we go … In this corner we have Derek Kawakami, and in this corner we have Mel Rapozo. Both men more than qualified, both men of integrity. The question remains, can either of them sing as well as Mayor Carvalho? If so, that’s the one whom has my vote!

A throwback moment... Kimo Rosen  actually ran  for County council back
in 2012 when Derek Kawakami resigned to run for
State representative opening up a seat on county council, thus causing
a special run-off election which would be decided  by the sitting
council on whom should take over his seat.
I submitted my resume and bio along with 7 others.  KipuKai Kualii
was eventually selected by majority vote.

Derek Kawakami  went on to win as state representative
until last year when he relinquished his seat to run again
for Kauai county council to  be closer to home and family.

Although this blog is doing very well well in viewership with over 500 views people are afraid to post their choice for mayor, since so many are friends or somehow associated with both candidates. Just like I said in the column! ;-)
