To Pee or Not to Pee, That Is The Question

To pee or not to pee, that is the question on Kauai''s  north shore city of Kilauea .

"To be, or not to be" is the famous opening phrase of a soliloquy in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. In the soliloquy, Hamlet questions the meaning of life, and whether or not it is worthwhile to stay alive when life contains so many hardships. He comes to the conclusion that the main reason people stay alive is due to a fear of death and uncertainty at what lies beyond life."

 Like the play Hamlet visitors and locals alike are questioning whether it's worth staying alive if you have pay to pay 10.00 to a local restaurant  to urinate  or defecate while visiting Kilauea  , a city on  the North shore of Kaua'i.

Ten dollars can buy one  a decent lunch even on the overpriced island of Kaua'i but to have to pay another $10.00 to relieve oneself is totally insane?

A recent article in the Kaua'i Garden Island News by Leo  Azambuja   titled, "To-pay-a-fee-or-not-to-pee."  tells the story of a restaurant  owner  trying to come up with a permanent solution to restroom problems but laws have gotten in the way. She was having  the septic tank pumped every week, and now has installed porta potties. If the county opened the neighborhood center's restrooms it would alleviate the problem....  Read Leo's story;

My friend Chuck Lasker recently posted on his  Facebook wall  something I think says it all concerning this scenario,  "How to overreact and lose business out of spite: After reading the article, my opinion, right or wrong isn't what matters. What matters is, if I was planning on eating at Lighthouse Bistro and I saw that sign, I'd walk away. It's massively rude, regardless of the reasons. The tenants at Kong Lung need to demand that Patricia Ewing install/maintain sufficient restrooms for the entire need, regardless  if it's homeless, tourist or patrons. If it's too expensive, then close it up - that's how business works. To anger your customers while you wait for government to come solve your business problem is a uniquely Kaua'i thing. To put it all on homeless people is not only offensive, it's unconstitutional by the Hawai'i state constitution - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kānāwai_Māmalahoe  

"It's ironic really, because if you ask anyone where the "bleeding heart liberal" part of the island is, they'd say the north shore. But if you look at north shore businesses regarding the homeless, etc., they're often cold as ice."

At  least guys have an easier time finding a bush.... I say if you plan a trip to the north shore of Kaua'i, men  remember to  bring a portable urinal like us old guys over 55  keep by the side of our beds, woman bring a 5 gallon bucket, your guy may need it too.  By law  restaurants must have wheel chair accessible restrooms, now imagine if someone in a wheelchair is turned down because they do not have the ten dollars?The ADA would be all over them with lawsuits coming out the butt (excuse the pun) (Cha Ching)

A  sign at the restaurant  in the future might read; one slice pizza $5.00, one drink $2.00, restroom use $10.00 and $15.00 to breathe our AC, or $20.00 for fresh salted ocean air! For our loyal patrons coffee is on the house, literally on the roof of the house!

A restaurant that charges ten dollars to use it's toilet right or wrong must realize many will be offended by the sign alone and never come in the doors.They have even posted a sign as seen above that violators will be prosecuted? Prosecuted for using a restroom?

 It looks like this would be a good restaurant for Chef Gordon  Ramsey's show, "Kitchen Nightmares."

A conversation between  a visitor and the restaurant owner might go like this;
Restaurant owner- "Sir, will there be anything else besides your $10.00 fee to poop and shishi?"
Visitor-"Yes please give me some of that fresh salted ocean air for $20.00 and a fake smile for $30.00."
Restaurant owner-"Will there be anything else?"
Visitor- "No Thanks"
Restaurant owner- "OK then,  that will be $ 60.00, did we mention toilet paper is an extra 25.00 plus tax?...And let us say ALOOOOOOOOOOOOHA!"

Friends

My grandfather taught me, “True friends are like diamonds, precious but rare, false ones like autumn leaves found everywhere.” Does anyone remember autograph books? I used to quote  this little ditty in all the books I signed.

I’m not a people collector. Many writers are not. I was born a wordsmith-it’s the Irish in me.. My mother said I was “…born with my tongue tied in the middle and wagging at both ends.” It’s lucky for the world there’s ink and paper, otherwise you’d all be deaf.

But I love friends. I’m very proud of the friends I’ve made. So many wonderful people. New ones keep popping in. Old ones- not false ones-often take another path. We meet.  We smile. Exchange tid- bits. Wave. Move on.

I’m thinking of a wonderful  pair, Cynthia and Ed Justus at the Talkstory Bookstore in Hanapepe. Cynthia with her glorious  red hair is almost like a new one. She ‘s gorgeous. Always was, but today, holy moly. The last time I saw her, my hear skipped a beat.  I thought Ed had got himself a new wife.

These two started collecting awards for their book store years ago and never stopped. They need  a new wall and some more shelves to hold all the framed documents and  trophies.  I love sitting in Talkstory on a Friday Festival and Art Night.   I call it a ‘people’s party’. To sit there, signing books is a treat. People come from all over Kauai, all over Hawaii, all over the world. If you love and need to collect people-for a moment-take this in. Starts about 5:30.  Ends about 9:00.

The food. The aroma. Those scrumptious pies and the-I’m running out of adjectives- delicious girls who bake and sell them.  The fish photographer. The folk art.  The music. The sheer joyful moments that surround the place, like frosting on a cake, are to be devoured by the senses. It’s an emotional high that youngs the heart and the mind. Hanapepe is still old Hawaii. Roosters are a feature. Part of nature’s wonder. Artists paint them. Sweet, wonderful dogs- some free, some leashed- are part of this remarkable scene.

It’s like the old song, “Oh give me a street where the lap doodles meet, and the young and the old folks abound…”

Occasionally we even get a celebrity. On Kauai we smile and let them roam free, too.

I’m waiting for George Clooney. When his hat and his wig fall off, I’ll never tell. There’s a perfect part for him in "The Scam." There’s even a swig of white wine in a honey bottle to quench his thirst.

I could watch The Men Who Stare at Goats until I go blind. My favorite line, I can’t even write about it-it wasn’t George’s-”…the silence of the goas,” always cracks me up.

There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker with a "vote George W.Bush"T-shirt steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig.
"Well, whatcha' gonna do about it?" he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears. 

"Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can't stand to see a man crying." 

"This is the worst day of my life," I say. 
"I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. 
When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance. 
I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife with another man... and then my dog bit me." 

"So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; and then you show up and drink the whole damn thing!
"But, Hell, enough about me, how are you doing?"

RANDOM ACTS OF STUPIDITY

As we grow older, we recognize them. They stand out in the territory of being human.

The debate as to whom is responsible for these acts is gaining momentum. The arguments are sincere and often passionate but the truth is we cannot assume the responsibility for all of them. I remember- years ago- my husband and I on a beach on Oahu witnessed, swaggering out of the brush and onto the beach, some young sailors off Bill's sub. One of the guys, , the biggest, the leader of the pack, had a heavy Aqualung strapped on his back, black flippers attached to both feet, a mask  and a breathing tube stuck in his mouth. 

With great courage, and utter stupidity, he strode out into a heavy surf, his friends, tagging along behind, cheering him on. Bill and I took off running, waving and shouting, trying to head him off. The first wave he encountered picked him up like a flounder in a tsunami and planted him so deep in the sand we despaired we'd ever be able to dig him out. All of us got busy, risking our lives as the waves crashed on top of us to haul the guy out. If he hadn't had the hose stuffed in his face he'd probably have died of suffocation.

Who's to blame?  The publisher who printed the ad about Aqualungs in the paper? The guy who sold him the lung? He no doubt had to take a course, maybe in a pool, on how to use the thing, but who, in his right mind, would think the kid would try to walk out into crashing surf with the thing strapped to his back?

Bill was an excellent sailor, a yachtsman, and, after he died, I sailed with guys on their fancy yachts. I saw dollar signs instead of seamanship.  I  admired their yachts and assumed they knew what they were doing. How could I know, until I got out there, they didn't know a halyard from a sheet, the bow from the stern, a jibe from a tack or starboard from port? Should I have sued them for putting my life at risk? I don't think so. My answer :I think I'll stay ashore and watch from the bar to see if you make it out the harbor.

Today's fuss about obesity and diet is almost as stupid as the people who indulge in the fat feast. Maybe we should sue every four star hotel for those all- you –can- eat buffets.  Some of the plates their diners carry are heaped so high with calories one could suffer a heart attack just looking at them. With some people  the fat around their middle seem to match the fat inside their heads. They seem to think these  elegant  gastronomic events are nothing but pig outs.

It's a sadness in our country that people have become so stupid. Who shall we blame? Who shall we sue?

Garage Sale here we come

It's that time again this year for our neighborhood garage sale; time to sort through our treasures that we never looked at all year, time to get rid of those clothes that last fit in the 1990's, and time to chat with the neighbors.  

We usually have at least 20 homes participating and begin our A.M. at 7AM  with early birds sorting through our tables for the best choices.  It's a great way to empty out the garage, basement and closets with "stuff" that one will never miss and make a few extra bucks.  

The only thing that would put a damper on our fun will be bad weather for which we have been very lucky over the years. Usually August is a safe time to unload things and sprawl over the driveway all the items that need to be removed from the house.

Whatever does not get sold will be bagged up and taken to the Good Will and NOT back into the house; it's the rule ...whatever makes it to the driveway doesn't return. 

So here's to bargain hunters everywhere...let them land in our neighborhood and leave with handfuls of items.

Obama Da Dog and her master James "Kimo" Rosen recently listened to panel of Pro-GMO scientists talk story about farming food and our future at the Kapa'a Elementary school cafeteria. Our conclusion was GMO's are not the anti-Christ although many seem to differ.

Scientists  talk story about the scientific value of GMO's at a talk story session on 07-30-13 at Kapa'a elementary school cafeteria. People are believing propaganda that is hearsay. Rat's getting cancer from eating GMO food is a common scare tactic, come to learn the rats in the study that ate non GMO food also contacted cancer. The rats used in the study are the variety prone to cancer. This is one of many examples that needs to be heard.

Councilman Gary Hooser the co-author of controversial bill 2491  did not show up at either talk story session about GMO farming,food and our future  on the west side or east side to learn about the scientific  realities of GMO's.

Mr. Hooser and others are believing propaganda that is hearsay.  Rat's getting cancer from eating GMO food is a common scare tactic, come to learn from the talk story session with 5 prominent scientists that  the rats in the study that ate non GMO food also contacted cancer. The rats used in the study are the variety prone to cancer. This is one of many scarred rumors that need to be heard.

In the interim I am afraid that the   contrarians (  SouthPark calls  the ones whose parents came to Kauai on cruise ships ) the same people behind the demise of the super-ferry are back.

Councilman Hooser was instrumental in the demise of the Superferry which in turn caused the airlines to have a monopoly on inter island travel and now  charge outrageous prices. Many times you can fly from Honolulu to Las Vegas round-trip cheaper than a round-trip from Kauai to Oahu.

   Now if  bill 2491 passes it would add drastically to unemployment on Kauai, possibly leading Kaua'i to do what Detroit just did, file bankruptcy.

It's time to stand up to Hooser and  listen to facts not hearsay. Be careful of Hooser as we do not want to become losers.

Obesity

Fat’s s all over the news. It’s all over the place. Even Michelle speaks about it. Walk through any American city, any town, any street, and you’ll see them, the waddlers. Not just adults. Kids. This is not normal body fat, this is, sick American fat.

On our discussion site on Kauai we have one very cranky gentleman who is overweight and suffers from hypoglycemia. Why is that?  is it a disease? We know the his grumpy attitude is a symptom of the dysfunction. What is he doing wrong? What does his doctor say?

I have a theory . Many, if not most, of these poor people are starving to death. What? Starving? Look how fat they are. Starving people are skin and bones, we’ve seen them in third world countries; and  that’s a bit like saying, “What global warming? Look how cold it is. See the snow.”

The kind of fat/starvation I’m talking about is often caused by a lack of money, just as in third world countries, but here, with some paper in their pockets, people buy cheap, fast foods. Fill the belly. Stuff the junk in the  mouth. Chew. Swallow. Go to McWhoever’s and buy a cheap hamburger-with a bite of lettuce-for a couple of those long green paper things. Bread and beef fills their bellys- that’s for sure, look at them- and they’re starving. Their bodies are screaming for food. More food. Feed me. Buy a Twinkie. Grab a soft drink. Ease the pain of starvation.

Every body has nutritional needs. Not just a need to fill the belly, and, if these nutritional needs are not met, the body screams for it. But it doesn’t say to the poor suffering victim of fat/starvation, “I need some B vitamins. I need some A. I need some C.” Well it does, actually, but the poor starving fellow doesn’t get it. Doesn’t hear it. He just stuffs some more stuff in his mouth, chews and swallows, and goes back for more.

How many of you eat microwave dinners?  Some quite delicious. Some quite expensive. Some even organic, so the label says. The label on the box lists all the vitamins, all the good stuff, but did you ever stop to read the fat content? Some of those ‘healthy choice’ boxes of stuff contain 30% saturated fat! Saturated fat! About the unhealthiest stuff you can stuff in your mouth, chew, stuff in your belly and-boy oh boy-watch that part of your anatomy bulge up a storm of sickness.

The answer? Find out what your body needs. In Adelle’s book, LET’S GET WELL,  in many books about nutrition, in the index you will find many obvious physical and emotional symptoms of vitamin deficiencies. Your body’s telling you something. Listen. Learn.  Don’t fall for fads. Or pills. If you fill your nutritional needs you won’t feel hunger. You can eat less. Be well fed and grow thin. Honest.
