Trump's wall and how it can be financed

I cannot understand why so many are against President Trump's wall?

Most Americans lock their doors to their homes and many have fenced or hedged in yards. Most people lock their cars when they go shopping. Why? To protect their assets? (asses)

Many of the Hollywood elite that are staunch Trump haters  have  security guards at their fenced gated  in mansions with what appears to be big walls to protect their valuables.

Protecting our country from drug smugglers and illegals trying to get into our country is a major problem. Drug addiction is a huge problem with our youth and population in general. A wall would deter much of the drug traffic crossing the US through the Mexican /US Boarder.

Immigrants are what makes American great, the wall would also help deter the mass amount of illegal immigration between Mexico and The US.

President Trump had insisted during the campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall,it doesn't look like that will happen? It doesn't look like congress will vote to pay for the wall with taxpayer money?

There are other creative ways to finance the wall that have come up on social media and in talking story with friends.

1- Selling  billboard advertising on the wall and it  could bring in millions.
2- Take El Chapo and other  drug cartel moneys from drug busts that is sitting in vaults to
appropriately pay for the wall, this could bring in billions.
3- Make a memorial wall where you can buy bricks for $10.00-$20.00 each to memorialize a loved one. (Yours truly thought of that!)

I believe all three ideas could pay for the wall without one dollar of taxpayer money. I actually believe just drug cartel money alone would be enough to pay for the wall.

The wall is not about partisan politics, the wall is about keeping our country safe.

Billboards??--Is this wall along some scenic route? I wonder what kind of ads we would see...besides "Burma Shave" (haha)...And I wonder how many would "honor" a deceased loved one on such a negative landmark?...And even if they build the wall, I can't see it ever working well enough to justify the amount of money and new trouble it will cost the USA.

Aloha Kimo,

I have not kept my home or car locked since the 1970's. No robberies either.

I've always been proud that the whole continent of North America has been walless.

When I was a kid my aunts and uncles in Panama could drive up to New York on the late 50's Pan-American Highway as if it were the later US Interstate.

The USA is filled with a bunch of fearful schlubs.

That wall if ever built (and I do not believe it will be) will be a tremendous waste of money when the funds could be used to cure cancer and many other diseases. Big mouth Trump said Mexico would pay for it (OVER AND OVER!!) so why is he now asking the American citizens to pay for his mythical, billion or trillion dollar monument---HORRENDOUS!!
It will not keep immigrants from coming here---strengthening security with drones and other electronic devises but not a white elephant wall!!

From a man in West Hartford, Connecticut- The garden island news is very well read.

James Rosen had fascinating solutions to get Trump’s wall built. He says he got them from social media (always a trustworthysource of common sense) and friends (we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt).
“Selling billboard advertising on the wall, and it could bring in millions.”
I asked two professional media buyers about this. They laughed out loud.
(I suppose you could have billboards on both sides — one side in Spanish — as a way to get Mexico to pay for some of it.)
“Build a memorial wall where you can buy bricks for $10 to $20 each to memorialize a loved one.”
As of April 21, Trump’s latest ever-changing estimate for the wall was $10B (not the super-duper version, but let’s stick withthat).
Assuming we go for the super-duper $20 brick, that’s 500 million dead loved ones. (The U.S. population is roughly309,350,000.)
Maybe every American will cough up two dead loved ones to get us over the hump. My refugee ancestors would be deeplymoved to know that they’re being memorialized on a wall blocking desperate people, many of them children, from seekingrefuge here.
I know, they’re smuggling drugs. Here’s a surprise: The cartels know about boats and airplanes. A wall isn’t going to stopthem.
The only idea Rosen hasn’t come up with is the tried and true way to get something enormous built cheap: Slaves. It workedfor the Egyptians!
Meanwhile, America’s cybersecurity is as porous as Spongebob. Anybody building a wall for that?

From a guy in Taos, NM-The Garden Island News really gets around....Hoping I get some positive support?

Wall won’t do any good
Mr. Rosen, are you paranoid? The reason I ask is that I am wondering what has convinced you that building a 30-foot-high border wall will keep America safe? I haven’t been able to find any evidence that would give credence to that statement. Common logic would tell you that it’s next to impossible to construct a wall that cannot be tunneled under. Make the wall 30-feet-deep and someone will come along and dig a 31-foot-deep tunnel. The drug cartel certainly isn’t worried about a wall.
They have already found other, and better, means of getting their drugs into the hands of our addicts. Boats, for instance, or airplanes and submarines — yes, submarines. Now, if you had done a little research instead of shooting from the hip, you would have found that the vast majority of illegal immigrants crossing the border aren’t even Mexican.
In fact, the number of illegal immigrants from Mexico has declined by 85 percent since 2000. That goes with illegal immigration as a whole, too: the rate has been declining. What’s ironic is that the states where illegal immigration is growing are not even on the Mexican border, but states like Washington, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Louisiana.
Trump’s border wall will do absolutely nothing to address illegal immigration in this country. It’s a wasteful and pointless exercise that will cost us billions of dollars. The only thing it will do is create animosity between our third-largest trading partner and us.

I think Kimo Rosen's letter was more a tongue -n- cheek solution to the border wall. Some of you folks take every little thing and get your boxers in a wad just like the news outlets do. This hysteria over anything Trump is growing REAL old.

Kimo doesn't mention keeping out Mexicans either. He mentions a border between Mexico and the USA where people cross from around the world to get into the USA. No, illegals just don't all live in border towns, illegals do travel about the country. I guess some of the readers rebutting Kimo's letter don't realize that many countries are scrambling to build walls and fences to keep out the influx of refugees in their countries. They cannot handle the amount of people coming in and the nationals are getting angry. These "people" are creating huge problems in the countries that are taking them in. Plus they are not assimilating into the society's they are entering. They really don't want anything to do with western culture. So ask yourself, why aren't these people wanting to migrate to like countries where they have the same customs and values and can communicate? People all talk about how we are all immigrants. Immigration now is not like it was when our great grand parents came into this country. Far from it. No comparison. We live in a dangerous world now.

Carrie Kneubuhl-Eckert said...

Carrie continued from above....
Everyone is belly aching about how much the wall will
cost. Like you all know how much is spent for the various government agencies or stupid studies they waste money on. Like for instance, 74 billion was spent for food stamps, which is a 45% increase since Obama took office. ( food stamps are not a bad thing, but why is it going up?) Perhaps because there are no jobs. Or perhaps we have too many immigrants that we have to spend money to feed all these people with no skills to work. Or how about the USDA once gave researchers at the University of New Hampshire $700,000 to study methane gas emissions from dairy cows. Or the federal government spending 25 billion dollars a year maintaining federal buildings that are either unused or totally vacant. Or the U.S. military spending $998,798 shipping two 19-cent washers from South Carolina to Texas and $293,451 sending an 89-cent washer from South Carolina to Florida. Oh, I can go on an on how much waste the government spends.

The point is, the U.S government squanders our tax dollars on 100's of stupid things. And you all are complaining about "Trumps wall" like it is the most stupid idea of stopping illegals and illegal drugs.

Sure you can tunnel under a wall. But that takes a little more doing and gives our border patrol a little more time to catch.

Yep there is always the water and planes that bring people in that overstay their visa. But that is being addressed as well.

What I don't get it why people are opposed to keeping illegals out and having them not come in legally. Here in Mexico, ( were we currently reside), you cannot believe the amount of paperwork you need to apply for a temporary or permanent visa in Mexico. You have to show you make a certain amount of money each month, show two years of tax returns, show a substantial amount of assets. And then you are not given a chance to work here unless you are hired from a Mexican company or you plan to open a business that uses Mexican citizens for work. They do not want you here to take jobs away from the Mexican people. Meaning you have to contribute to the economy and pay taxes. And in some areas, you can never own the land you buy a house on. It is held in trust by a Mexican bank. Mexico protects it's citizens. And the have high tariffs for goods coming into Mexico because they want you to buy goods from Mexico. We in the USA, do not do these things. In the States, many of our hard earned taxes go to illegals and to refugees and wasteful government spending. If I am going to hand over so much of all the taxes I pay, I want it to benefit Americans and Americans in need of help.

So I am for the stop of illegal immigration because I see it as a plus for American workers. I am for America first. I am for stopping the waste in government spending. The good old boys in Washington on worried that their pockets will not be lined anymore because Trump is president. Trump is crazy. But like a fox. He knows business and yes failed in some. That is life and we are all in that same boat. He defeated 16 seasoned politicians and beat the Clinton dynasty despite all the crooked attempts to stop him. Let him do his job, then complain later if he didn't do the job.

In response to Mr. Maislin’s letter (TGI, Forum, Ya 13) about the wall. Actually, I believe you cherry-picked some of Mr. Rosen’s ideas. Perhaps you do not want any wall. That’s your opinion, but to trivialize Mr. Rosen’s ideas is so typical of the way our country has degraded … demonize, trivialize and vilify anyone with a different opinion.
What he said is use the money from El Chapo for one and all the money we confiscate from illegal cartels, use creative ways to pay for it like buying comparative bricks or ads in the paper.
We need to keep our country free of the drugs coming from Mexico and Central America. We just lost a dear friend’s son from a heroin overdose. It is rampant in NY and I’m sure it is in Connecticut as well.
Protect our people and secure our borders … what is so terrible about protecting American citizens first? If you don’t agree, then at least be courteous enough to realize that other people do not all share your opinion.
God Bless and protect America!

Wall will only further divide us
I have an opinion that may differ from Rene Kontos regarding Mr. Trump’s wall and I have just as much right as you toexpress it. Even though James “Kimo” Rosen has strange ideas, he may be on to something.
We should confiscate “El Chapo”s” illegal drug money as well as other cartel assets, but instead of building a wall we shouldbe building and re-building bridges and highways.
Instead of building a wall, we should invest in education, where funds are being slashed by this administration.
Rather than a wall, let’s build safeguards for our environment now that the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) hashed its funding slashed. Instead of building a wall let’s get our troops out of Afghanistan, where most of the world’s opium poppies are grown and used to make heroin.
I suggest that instead of a wall, let’s build relationships with people around the world instead of threatening and killing them.
I submit that building these type of bridges will be a much better use of these funds. Encouraging the kind of paranoia that Mr. Rosen endorses will not keep anyone safe.

Regarding Allen B White response that a wall may further divide us. That is what walls and fences do. Most everybody lives with a wall or fence around their property. Yes it divides me from my neighbor. It gives me privacy and defines my property and makes us feel more secure. It also helps people from encroachment on your property. I don't think that means I dislike my neighbor. But in some cases, maybe I have.

Safeguarding environment and education have been deteriorating for decades and the money for that should have been funded decades ago. That is nothing new to this president. And for the record I am against slashing both of those. But government wastes money on other stupid funding. And that still needs to be workout better. I am not for everything Trump has proposed.

We have to fight terrorism in countries that do not have the capability of doing it for themselves. Otherwise it will continue to grow and we will never be safe. So leaving Afghanistan has provided to be a bad choice. We cannot leave the Middle East if we want to combat the people that eagerly train to kill the western world and want to obliterate us.

Countries have had border since the beginning of time and there's a reason for that. And we have more reason than ever to have borders and walls than we ever have had before.
