Everyone's talking, long live the King..!" 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

The King can sure make a Burger!
Read "Be kind like the King"(Bacon sundaes, whats next?)
http://dakinetalk.blogspot.com/2012/06/bacon-sundaes-whats-next-james-kimo.html?spref=fb

The folks at BK are marketing Gurus!

I recently wrote in this forum about the new bacon sundae at Burger king in an article titled, "Be kind like the King." The final sentence of the article was suppose to be funny, I think it was,it said, "Now if they would only make a whopper milkshake we'd have it all."
After my last article I realize the whole concept of a bacon sundae. It isn't about a delectable mouth watering culinary work of art that satisfies your palette's most exotic needs, but rather a marketing genius of a masterpiece scheme concocted by the marketing Gurus of Burger King.

This is what has transpired since the birth of the bacon sundae, newspapers, pod-casts,cable and network TV news, magazine ads,  radio talk shows, sermons from Rabbi's to bloggers like myself from all over the globe are talking about this amazingly ludicrous creation.

Do you honestly believe Burger King thought this was a culinary delight, they new it was far  fetched and a little mishugina (crazy) they knew this would push the buttons of many, which in turn generated millions of not billions in free mention of their brand all over the globe.

No question in my mind, this being one of the best subliminal marketing ploys in History!  Long live the King!

"What time is it..?" 'Obama Da Dog'

"Do you want the time where we  just came from or do you want local time?"

http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-friday-june/article_2e219fce-c1c5-11e1-a469-001a4bcf887a.html  (check out the kudos to me  in the URL)
Recently as I stood in line at Costco outdoor cafe the woman in front of me asked a tourist couple, "Do you know what time it is?"There reply  was the one most visitors give thinking their retort was  witty and funny.

Here's what they said,
"Do you want the time where we  just came from or do you want local time, since our watches are still set to New York time, we will give you the time in New York, OK?"

Please spare us that line, the only line that might be used more obnoxiously  is, "call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner," unless of course we are still on Japan time....

"Bacon sundaes, what's next..?" James "Kimo" Rosen

Burger King now offers a bacon sundae...

The staff is kind,  smiles and give friendly head nods whether you order or just wish to use the restroom.

"Be Kind," should be the new signature motto   for Burger King, Kapa'a. "BK," now stands for Burger King and "Be Kind!"

Next time your on the road and have the need to eat, or even another need, remember (BK) "Be kind," that's exactly what my friends at Kapa'a Burger King are, kind!
Did you know they use local home grown tomatoes on their sandwiches, and that the french fries have zero trans-fats. They also have a variety of Garden salads.

For all you exotic  food lovers they now offer a complete line of ice cream sundaes, including a bacon, fudge and caramel sundae, now if only they would make a whopper milk shake we'd have it all.
This blog recently appeared

Afterthought does anyone besides me think that Burger is doing this for all the free PR they are receiving from blogs like this all over the world, after all a bacon sundae is not really a delight to the pallet or is it?
Ironically My friend Rabbi Barr also blogged about this in a short 2 minute sermon, please listen- http://bethadam.org/it-aint-kosher/

"The Cleaning Frenzy..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Inspirational Wednesday)

Guest-blogger Bettejo Dux is one of Kauai's most colorful people, she has lived on the cosmic island of Kaua'i for over 40 years... She is an animal lover, people lover and enjoys life to the fullest.Today she guest blogs about  getting her place spic and span for her 82-ND birthday party this coming August...

THE CLEANING FRENZY

So where have I been for the past two weeks? On a cleaning frenzy.
I will admit that I am not a clean freak. I am not even a good housekeeper. And it shows. I’d rather be out in the barn with a pitchfork or out in the lush green jungle with all the living things. Nevertheless, one has to clean a house sometime or else one has to burn it down. This year I came very close to striking the match.
This goes along with my theory that we are nothing more than a product of our past. My mother wasn't a good housekeeper and she never taught me any of the homely arts. That’s what I thought of then, anyway. Homely. Once as a little girl I tried to bake some peanut butter cookies but they turned green. Not a healthy green, either, I don’t  know why, and it put me off. For the rest of my life. I don’t like to cook,  but I’m working on that one. I mean I can’t learn to cook any younger now can I?

When I married for the first time, as a new bride I moved to Quito, Ecuador. My groom and I dwelt with grand aristocracy  in a great white mansion on Los Compos Eliseos. It had a very large three-story foyer with a circular staircase and a glass ceiling which leaked when the fabulous storms in the Andes roared and ranted. There were two major bedroom suites with glass panels that leaked, big time, in the bathroom ceiling. I don’t think it had a skylight in the kitchen, I was only in it once, in the middle of the night when I felt a snack coming on, but I couldn't find the light switch so that temptation did not get delivered. I had to wait for the cook to get up the next morning so the upstairs maid could deliver me a heavenly scented brew in the Italian marble tub.

Life today, in the USA, is very different. I've never worked as hard, physically, as I do now and a cleaning frenzy around here is a major gymnastic feat. I’m up in the rafters. I’m under the sinks and counters. I’m in hidden hidey holes I forget even existed. I've already worn out three brooms. I dislike vacuum cleaners, I aways get tangled in the cords. Once I fell off a ladder clambering clumsy footed  down after scrubbing the skylight in the living room. It now looks its age but it doesn't leak and an artist friend thought it a beautiful piece of green flecked marble.

I must also tell you this about my house, it was never finished, probably never will be, and it’s wide open to the elements and the animals and the greenery that slithers in on silent stalks and leaves that whisper nothings in my ear. Birds also flutter  in and out. Not always welcome, but the red cardinals flash gorgeous and the thrush tweet and twitter sweet.

Why the furor of the frenzy? Because I’m hosting a happy 82 in August. If I survive.

"The element of Kimo Therapy‏..." James "Kimo" Rosen

Element energy bars
are delicious, healthy, organic,
filling and can curve your
appetite.
Kimo's Delight! A blend of
Cashews, Cherries, apricots,
sunflower & pumpkin seeds,
brown rice and apple juice.
also known as Kimo-Therapy.
One of my favorite TV shows is  ABC's Shark Tank, where entrepreneurs plead their case for business investors to a panel of five multi-millionaires.
Last year I was watching the show and saw Jonathan  Miller the owner of Element bars ask the "Sharks" for A  $150,000 investment for his new company that makes custom organic energy bars.

Jonathan looks like a young Dr. Oz, which can't hurt when your pitching health and well being. That  episode of Shark Tank is one of my favorites since the company is actually providing something healthy and fun, plus the owner makes a living for himself and a small staff of employee's. Check  out the "Shark Tank" episode on Youtube with Element bars;
You tube- Shark-Tank, Element Bars Part-1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02SAm85Kq0c

"Jonathan Miller has created a unique custom energy bar business. And he won't take no for an answer! This "mini shark" may be the most clever entrepreneur to ever set foot in the Shark Tank." You-tube heading
You Tube-Shark Tank, Element Bars-Part-2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq-gb_iQlSo
Don't mistake Jonathan for Dr. Oz, Jonathan looks like a young Dr. Oz!
I  made my own  Element bar called "Kimo's Delight"  the recipe consists of  of cashews, cherries, apricots, pumpkin seed, sunflowers seeds, brown rice and apple juice, nothing artificial. I call it "Kimo's Delight!" (The Dakine Bar) Actually it was more like Kimo-Therapy. Since purchasing these energy bars, I have lost 7 lbs  and my blood glucose numbers have dropped. I do not crave food, they curve and satisfy my appetite. Which is great news since I am a type-2 diabetic.  The  custom bars may  seem expensive at $3.00 each, however you can't put a price on health.  I eat half in the morning and half in the afternoon which cuts your price in half.
Element bars also offers many different  bars with their own unique recipes which can be purchased for $2.00 each. I usually don't endorse products, however this product is like nothing you have tasted, It's   ono, (delicious in Hawai'ian) healthy and fun.
I just came from  my doctor and turned him onto Element bars and he is placing an order for his family. I highly recommend Element bars, you can try them  and receive a 20% discount by logging onto;
On orders of $50.00 or more  postage is free!

For the best tasting and healthiest snack, I highly recommend some Kimo-therapy for your long range health! Tell them Kimo sent you...

"Wop da Jaw" and "Broke da Mout" (Hawaiian pidgin for simply awesomely delicious)

"Thank God it's Monday..!" 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Monday)"TGIM"

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years..." She talks about the present and enjoying each day as it is a present.  Enjoy...

Why do we think Fridays are so important?
When my children were in elementary school, the school put on an assembly about teaching your children not to always look forward to Fridays and the weekend. It has stuck in the back of my mind for all these years as my children are about 30 yrs old now.

The whole meaning behind not dwelling on Friday all week is that we spend too much time looking forward to the future and what’s going to be, instead of living in the present and enjoying each day as it comes. Each day has something to offer and enjoy and if we spend all week wishing it was Friday then we can’t enjoy our lives and appreciate each day. It’s not an easy concept to live by because those of us that work and go to school still cannot help but project during the week. I find myself doing the same thing but try and catch myself every time I think that and remember what that speaker told us with our children; live for the present and appreciate each gift, or life will just pass by as you keep wishing for another day to come.

"Gourmet meals for less than $5.00..." 'Obama Da dog'

This plate of food could cost 19.95 or more in a restaurant, you make
 this for under 4.00...

All these ingredients were purchased at Costco Kaua'i!

They say in Hawai'ian pidgin; "Broke da mout," and "Wop da jaw," if something is awesomely delicious, ono and mouth watering....

WE all love to eat and for many Americans it's starting to show on their waist, hips and buttocks.

I have decided to start a recipe blog of healthy meals for less than $5.00 that are not only healthy and hearty, but affordable and inexpensive. And with no snacking after dinner you can eat like this and lose weight or maintain your current weight.

Fillet Mignon with bacon wrapped around the sides.  Six fillet Mignon cost 15.99 at Kauai Costco.
That's 2.66 per fillet. I do not eat the bacon , my dog gets that part since she deos not keep kosher.

Costco potato salad for a huge 3lb container costs only $3.49. A  six once serving cost's .35 cents

Costco sweet and spicy bean salad with corn cost $6.00 for 64 oz's. A 2 once serving cost .20 cents

The sunflower sprouts are free, since I trade spinach in my garden for them and the pepperoncinis cost pennies.

I fillet...........................2.66
2 oz bean salad...           .20 each
6 oz potato salad......... .35
2-pepperoncinis.............. .08
I ear corn....................... 40
 Total...........................3.69

with a few spice s and minimum butter on the corn along with an ice cold crystal lite lemonade this whole dinner costs under $4.00 and less than 15 minutes to prepare with minimum dishes.

This same dish in a restaurant would easily sell for 19.95 or more...

Bon appetit, wop da jaw, broke da mout and enjoy!

"Pleasing everyone is impossible.." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

James "Kimo" Rosen
even pisses his own
dog off!  ;D)

"As I've grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible. But pissing everyone off is a piece of cake."

The above quote recently posted on facebook by a friend could easily be my mantra. There is also the old expression, "that many of earnest word is spoken in jest."

Well  folks, just to let you know I am against gay marriage. I am for legalized gambling and prostitution.

Now, have I managed to piss everyone off reading this?  ;D)

Just kidding... Or am I?  :D)

"Kimo's Doctored up dakine chili..."

Adding fresh vegetables to canned chili makes it taste
home-made. I used all the vegetables and spices above.

Da food Doctor, PHD
Cut up all vegetables and put in microwave
safe dish, then add the can of chili and approximately 1/3 cup water.

My favorite place to shop is Costco, I fall victim to  the free food  samples and wind up buying quite a few. A few weeks back I stumbled upon Hormel's special reserve Chili, by far the best canned chili I have ever tasted. I bought case of  eight  for $9.95 and the chili winds up costing 1.25 per 15 oz. can. Usually I do not like canned food, this is the exception.

I decided to do with a can of chili, what I usually do with a pizza and that is doctor it up. I added bell pepper, jalapeno pepper, red onions, fresh garlic and fresh grape tomatoes along with finely cut fresh ginger.  I combine all these ingredients into a microwave save bowl,l then added the can of chili and about one third can of water. Microwaved for a total time of approximately 4 minutes, I took it out and stirred and put back for another 4 minutes.

For  gourmet chili at a reasonable price, just doctor the chili like you would a pizza. You can add what ever you like, sausage, hamburger, celery, whatever is  around the house, however you won't go wrong with my recipe above!

Served on a bed of brown rice,  red potatoes, and carrots. Cook the potatoes, carrots and brown rice all together and it makes for a great healthy carb...

Now put in microwave and serve on a bed of brown rice-red potato and carrots, makes for three filling meals...

THE MEN’S ROOM

If you are a religious type woman who is submissive to her husband and always most humble, this is not for you. It’s not a tea party. If you’re sassy and feisty come on in. Just lock the door behind you and watch your back.

I like men, right next to a long list of animals- horses, macaws, cats, dogs, roosters and other living stuff on this planet- I like them best of all. I think we are products of our past, don’t you?

Guess I was fortunate.  I had a wonderful small loving family-I was an only child- adored my father and that’s where it all began…
I was fortunate in that I did not have a religious up bringing. None of the heaven and hell and damnation stuff, none of the sin stuff or god stuff got poured into my hungry little mind. I was taught to behave. Be polite. Not to lie. To respect my elders, my teachers. I loved school. My father told me I was as good as any boy and he put me on a flea-bitten grey horse, my first horse, Finlandia who stood sixty four inches at the withers; I stood about thirty six inches top to toe. That may be part of it  as well. Once you learn to deal with these big animals, bullies get a kind’a cutting down to size. “Bully me,” was my motto, “and maybe I’m a hundred pounds wringing wet but I know how to use a curb.” Later, as all who read me know, I learned to wield a poisoned pen. My daddy liked my sharp tongue. In fact, he kind’a fostered a ‘talk back attitude’. We loved to argue at my house, in my married house we did, too.

On a recent  infamous Kauai post I suggested that-hold your breath- “…maybe there are guys who identify with dumb as a rock, alcoholic, macho loons like George Bush,” and-holy moly- a macho loon pitched a fit. Of course, as it always turns out with the right wing propaganda machine, the lie was it was I who went berserk. This would really be hilarious, if it weren't so annoying. The next macho fit came about  when a fellow-a kind nice guy if a bit over the religious top -quoted Voltaire at me and I quoted back, ” “Ecrasez l’infame!” (crush the infamous thing-Christianity) and thus began another fight.
Now listen closely-sassy, fiesties- just a few hundred years ago I’d have been burned at the stake. In my grandmother’s day, I’d have been tossed in the loony and things haven’t changed that much. Any uppity, arrogant woman who dares talk back is a…I’ll let you insert assorted adjectives.

Still with me?  The male chorus  in the MEN’S ROOM, many self proclaimed Jesus jumpers who wear right wing Republican banners round their blubber, are still singing in the discordant choir.
Think: you seldom see this on the political left.  Women on the left are admired for their sharp tongues, their wit, their intelligence, their poisoned pens. Women on the left write their own books. They don’t need religious right wing money, ghost writers and editors to strut their stuff. The women right wing looners would never enter a men’s room. Except to scrub the toilet.

Please young sassy and feisty, watch Iron Jawed Angels. Know we’re not yet out of the woods. Talk back. Join the party and it ain't tea, baby.

"To be old or young..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration poetic Monday)

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years..." Enjoy Judy's poetic Monday!

To Be OLD or YOUNG….CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE…?

Hardly able to walk…..young or old
Difficulty getting food to the mouth….young or old
Difficulty expressing thoughts….young or old
There is one big difference….To be young and have the world as your oyster, ready to experience life and all its wonder…
To be old and having experienced life to its fullest…full of wisdom...

"Paranormal experience's..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau'' (Source)

Dakinetalks good friend and regular contributor is back blogging about  the paranormal, one of my favorite subjects, "Ghosts" ;D)
Unc is a reitred cinematographer living his twilight years on the island of Oahu. Chester served in the Korean war and enjoys the naturist lifestyle.
A professor at Wayne State University in Detroit was giving a lecture on Paranormal Studies
To get a feel for his audience, he asks, "How many people here believe in ghosts?"

About 90 students raise their hands.

"Well, that's a good start. Out of those who believe in ghosts, do any of you think you have seen a ghost?"

About 40 students raise their hands.

"That's really good. I'm really glad you take this seriously. Has anyone here ever talked to a ghost?"

About 15 students raise their hand.

"Has anyone here ever touched a ghost?"

Three students raise their hands.

"That's fantastic. Now let me ask you one question further...Have any of you ever made love to a ghost?"

Way in the back, Hammad raises his hand.

The professor takes off his glasses and says, "Son, all the years I've been giving this lecture, no one has ever claimed to have made love to a ghost. You've got to come up here and tell us about your experience."

The Middle Eastern student replied with a nod and a grin, and began to make his way up to the podium. When he reached the front of the room, the professor asks, "So, Hammad , tell us what it's like to have sex with a ghost?"

Hammad replied, "Dang, from way back there I thought you said Goats."

The opinions, beliefs and viewpoints expressed by the various authors and forum participants on this blog site do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints of the Publisher of Dakinetalk the blog, but they could? ;D)

"New Senior Medicare Progam..!" 'Marvin Gross' (Source)

NEW SENIOR PROGRAM....
New Medicare Program our thanks to Marvin Gross a financial consultant
and a senior citizen himself residing in Western N.Y. as the source
of this important information....
You're a sick senior citizen and the government says there is no nursing
home available for you. So what do you do?

Our plan gives anyone 65 years or older a gun and 4 bullets.
You are allowed to shoot four Politicians.

Of course, this means you will be sent to prison where you will get three meals a day,
a roof over your head, central heating, air conditioning and all the health care you need!
Need new teeth? No problem. Need glasses? That’s great. Need a new hip, knees
, kidney, lungs or heart? They’re all covered.
As an added bonus, your kids can come and visit you as often as they do now.

And who will be paying for all of this? It’s the same government that just told
you that you they cannot afford for you to go into a home.

And you can get rid of 4 useless politicians while you are at it.
Plus, and because you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income taxes anymore.
Is this a great country or what? "

"The Blog must go on..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen (Aloha Friday)

"Time for a sabbatical, a rest from writing opinion articles for the local paper. Time to go on a fishing sojourn, for how long, nobody knows..?"
I have taken a sabbatical from submitting letters to the editor for my local newspaper, "The Kaua'i Garden Island News."

It seems many people no matter what I say in an opinion article (LTE) will take it out of context and  go on and on and on in the comments section spewing non-truths.  I know how President Obama must feel with so many nut cases accusing him of being a closet Muslim and not being a US citizen. Although I am not a politician, I am criticized as one since I have had over 300 opinion articles published in the last five years alone. I guess I get the benefit of being a politician without being elected. I really don't enjoy it, although many have told me  I bring it on myself by submitting so many opinion articles, which in reality is the truth.

I wrote an opinion article last March about food trucks and the prices being high and portions small. I went on to say, I believe the trucks could improve their business by lowering their prices and relying on volume sales. Many interpreted my article as I was saying  do not support food trucks, when in essence I was trying to coach the food trucks into doing more business.

Another example, I said Obama  made a mistake in support of gay marriage, I went on to say I still support Obama but don't believe the majority of voters will. This had a rash of commenter's believing I was homophobic and against anything gay.

They say familiarity breeds contempt. Therefore for the time being, I have decided to take a much needed rest from my prolific letter writing.
Remember, rain, sleet, vog and fog, the blog must go on!  ;D)

For those who approach me  on the street and enjoy my articles, mahalo. For those who don't enjoy my rest...

added note, an opinion article of mine appeared on 06-17-12 in the Kaua'i Garden Island News "Let's hear it for the  professional hand wavers"

This article was submitted on 06-02-12. I  had no idea they would sit on a story for two weeks. Usually articles are published  around the time you submit them....

Special note, (Vog looks like fog but is a sulphur compound put off by the Hawaiian volcanoes on a frequent basis.)

Michael Herr dakinetalks regular Aloha Friday contributor is on vacation and will hopefully resume his awesome weekly column upon his return...

"Religion sucks, G-d is great..!" 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

This is my most controversial heavy duty subject I have commented on. I have been sitting  on a rough draft of this blog  for two years. I finally decided to publish this, some will love it, others won't.  Please note I love G-d, and do not intend to offend anyone. I believe that all religions work if you believe in them...  G-d is everywhere and an understanding and forgiving G-d, I Love the L-rd! This is just how I feel... Read more...

It's funny, I used to look forward to the sabbath, now that I am retired everyday is like the sabbath, in fact on sabbath I usually work more than I do during the week. Sabbath is good for people working and having the stresses that life throws their way. During the week I bicycle and walk as my primary means of transportation, however on the sabbath I drive my car so I can visit and relax with good friends who live further than a relaxing walk or bike ride.

They say you should be in a different consciousness on the sabbath and since during the week I walk and bike, sabbath is the day I drive.

I love my orthodox Rabbi friend's but find some of their customs to be unhealthy and just plain not Jewish.

1- They (Chabad) worship the former  Rebbe as a 'messiah,' they write letters of prayer to him and throw them on his grave.(ohel) Not that there is anything wrong with this since I believe there are many ways to get to your spiritual destination. (More than one road to Rome...)
(for information log ontohttp://www.ohelchabad.org/templates/articlecco_cdo/AID/78446)

This is ironic since the 'Shema' the signature prayer of Judaism, states one G-d and only one G-d) that's one of the reasons the Jew's don't believe in Jesus, they believe in going to the source, no intermediary. Yet they write letters of prayer to a dead person they worship as the messiah and display wall photos of him similar to many Christians displaying photos of Yeshua. ( The Hebrew name for Jesus)

2- During circumcision the orthodox Rabbi will suck the infants penis to clean off the blood. There is an incident where an infant boy contacted the herpes virus from this procedure. The practice is known as oral suction, or in Hebrew, 'metzitzah b'peh.' After removing the foreskin of the penis, the practitioner, or mohel, sucks the blood from the wound to clean it. It became a health issue after a boy in Staten Island and twins in Brooklyn, circumcised by the same mohel in 2003 and 2004, contracted Type-1 herpes. Most adults carry the disease, which causes the common cold sore, but it can be life-threatening for infants. One of the twins died
(read more about this incident in the New York times;) http://www.nytimes.com/2005/08/26/nyregion/26circumcise.html

3- During all simcah's (celebrations) men dance with men and women dance with women, I would like to know the rate of closet homosexuality in the orthodox sect?

4- Some things are translated literally and some things symbolically? Not driving, not cooking, not talking on the phone on the sabbath all stem from a biblical passage that states, "no kindling of a fire." Ex(35:3) Therefore driving one's car ignites a spark plug and in modern day went on to include no driving. Symbolically I would interpret this to mean no fighting with family or friends.
( http://www.letusreason.org/7thAd4.htm) explains all rules of the sabbath, in fact disobeying them would be reason for a stoning, and I don't mean getting high.

5- Not carrying on the sabbath is another rule the orthodox follow on the sabbath, yet someone figured it was OK to wear your keys around your neck on a string since your not allowed to carry them in your pocket, playing attorney with G-d is stooping pretty pretty low...

6- Kosher laws are so crazy that one orthodox Rabbi will not eat at another orthodox Rabbi's since he may use products displaying a hechsher that he does not recognize, or might think that the oven used in baking or the ways of the food preparations was not properly administered. Another law hard to swallow is that if a non Jew turns on the oven and kosher food is to be cooked it makes the food non-kosher. Only a Jew can turn on the oven in an orthodox kitchen.
http://www.hechshers.info/about.htm

7- The old ritual that says you shouldn't work on the sabbath? Well sabbath is the day the Rabbi is on stage, he needs an audience a congregation, so of course he will say to not work, but ironically he is working, and usually the wife is dishing out food and moving chairs to accommodate guests.I think G-d would be happier if you took a homeless person to dinner than worried whether or not the potato chip had the proper hecksher marking on the package... Oy Vey... Read more on the different certifications and  kosher hechshers logos.

My conclusion is 'religion sucks and G-d is great,'(not a bad idea for a bumper sticker) and come judgment day, all of us will be in for a rude awaking when we say, oh, that's what you meant Lord.

Although all these laws seem crazy, even the practitioners who are usually of a high intellect will tell you they make no sense, but practitioner's continue on with the practice as a way to be obedient to their G-d.

They say you shouldn't question G-d, I agree you shouldn't question G-d, but you can question the people who interpret what they think G-d said.

ABOUT BETTEJO

I've seen Kauai through my own eyes for over forty years but my humorous novel, The SCAM, will be seen through the eyes of a character I love and created, Karen Holt, she and her whole clan, in the hip 60's. This column-you call it a blog-will take us back and bring us forward to today.

Today, driving to metropolitan Lihue, I see more cars than there were on the island when I arrived.
My husband, Bill,  was the Engineering Department Head for McBryde Sugar, a wholly owned subsidiary of Alexander and Baldwin, Big Five, lots of land and MATSON navigation; sugar was King then, actually the managers were Kings and department heads and their wives Lords and Ladies of the land. It was a wonderful life. We lived in some beautiful homes, one on the Spouting Horn Road-millionaire’s row-overlooking Kukuiula Harbor, where we kept our boat, and across the street from land we leased where we kept our horses. Our last abode, a lava rock  mansion up the Alexander Dam Road where, behind us all the way to Hanalei, there was no other habitation, was delightfully secluded.  Up there I rode my leopard appaloosa, Beauregard, followed by the dogs and my  black American Show Shetland stallion Flash’s Fanfare Sensation. Flashy darted along, no halter, no line, a free soul who, at the ripe old age of 40, sometimes led the way.

Our canine companions were two  Great Pyrenees and an odd assortment -sometimes two , sometimes three- of mixed bred size and shape. They fit in.

I did not. I was, and still am, sometimes, the one everybody loves to hate. In my lifetime of travels I've been the one everybody loved to love and the one everybody loved to hate and, truthfully, I  can’t tell you what role I liked the best.

Remember, I’d blown into Kauai from  big city Honolulu where I wrote a column for the Honolulu Star Bulletin/Advertiser,  some small local magazines, and acted with the only professional theater group in Hawaii, the Magic Ring Theater at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I was also a noisy Peacenik, an early environmentalist, and a rabid Letter to the Editor writer. I've kept what I call the Bettejo Page, an entire Letter to the Editor section of the Honolulu Advertiser with a guest commentary about over-development signed by Mrs. William Dux. A picture of me-2X6- with a blurb about my column and a cartoon showing a lady  holding back a million junked cars has a caption that still reads “Beauty and the Beast”. The head of my long diatribe reads “Where To Go When All’s  Gone?”

My writing and outspoken personality went over on Kauai like a tsunami at a beach party.
Poor Bill, he was constantly bombarded at work with, “Do you know what she did?” Which, by the way, most of the time I didn't.

I once had a neighbor drop in for coffee and regale me with his hour-long diatribe of what people were saying about me. My response, as I spilled hot coffee in his lap, “…and I hope they believe every word of it. Then they’ll stay away which is exactly what I want them to do.”
They did.
