My Hawaiian friends like to call me 'Jewaiian.'
Jewish people living on Kauai pray near Kealia beach. |
Jewish is pretty much the same as being white in Hawaii. Too most a white person no matter what religion in Hawaii is referred to the term 'haole."
In this manner the Jews fit in very well with other haoles. It's like we all went to haole school.
The state of Hawaii has a Jewish population of about 10,000 amongst the states 1.3 million population. Kauai hosting approximately 900.
I found it ironic with research into the number of Jews on the Hawaiian islands that Jews and Muslims listed together make up 1% of the population. Grouping Jews with Muslims is like doing a survey on dogs and grouping them with cats.
Some Native Hawaiians seriously believe they are descended from the Lost Tribes of Israel.
The Hawaiian word "Kahuna" which means priest, sorcerer, magician, wizard, minister, or an expert in any profession is derived from the Hebrew word, Kohen, (priest.)
There is another irony,the word "Aloha", which is used both as a salutation and to mean "love". This is very similar to "Shalom".
Hawaii elected Linda Lingle a Jewish Governor from 2002-2010. The Governor was also a Woman and a Republican, both being the minority in a Democratic state. What are the odds of not only a Jewish Governor, but a Caucasian woman and a Republican?
Could the Hawaiian people really be one of the lost tribes of Israel and Jewish?
A Torah scroll (Jewish Bible) and yad ("pointer") owned by the royal family of Hawaii is believed to show a connection between it and the early Jewish community. How the scroll and yad came into the possession of King David Kalakaua is not clear?
However one thing is certain, the Jews of Hawaii also known as Jewaiians have combined two very powerful and spiritual words; 'Shalom' and 'Aloha' to come up with 'Shaloha.'
G-d Bless Hawaii and it's people and let us say;
'Shaloha, L'chayim and Amen!
Love, Peace, Hello and To Life!
Jewish people love humor as do Hawaiians, therefore I must tell the following story;
"A Jewish man and his wife were planning a vacation. They ended up in an argument, though...
"It's 'Hawaii' I'm telling you!" she said.
"Oy! I never KNEW someone so stubborn! 'Havaii' is how it's pronounced!" he replied. And so it went all the way to the vacation...
As they got off the airplane, they passed by a man. The husband abruptly stopped the wife and turned to the man to ask, "Now that we're on the island, you can settle an argument between my wife and I. Is this 'Hawaii' or 'Havaii?'"
"This is Havaii," the man replied.
"Ha!" the husband said, turning to his wife, "See, didn't I tell you never to argue with me? I'm always right!" As they began to walk away, he turned back and gave the man a hearty "Thank you!"
"You're Velcome!!!" ;-)
Now if this isn't proof of the Hawaiian people being one of the lost tribes of Israel nothing is!
