ALOHA FRIDAY

It's Aloha Friday...

The Dark Behind My Eyes

Aloha folks,

I credit Terry Pratchett for the phrase, The Dark Behind My Eyes. I forget which book of his contained the phrase, but it got me thinking. That's where I live. That's where I have spent almost seventy years. In the dark behind my eyes. Looking out at the world.

I can see my hands. I can (on a good day and by holding in my stomach) see my feet. I can even see my back, in a mirror. And in that same mirror I can see my face, that mask I show to the world. But I can't see the "me" that resides inside me . . . inside my mind, in the darkness behind my eyes.

When I close my eyes I see memories, and I embrace dreams. And behind those closed eyes of mine, my mind goes on and on and on. In that darkness I plan . . . I remember . . . I hope . . . and I weep. But I can't see . . . at least not what I try to see. I always hope that someday I will see myself in that darkness. That I will finally come face to face, as it were, with my self. My inner self. The self that is the essence of me. The self that peers out from the darkness behind my eyes and tries to make sense of what it sees. And yet . . . do I really want to see myself? I'm not sure I really do want to see, fully, my inner self.

So I continue to peer out at the world, trying to make some sense of it all. And when it gets to be too much for me, I retreat.
I go back and take refuge in the darkness behind my eyes.
So, where do you live?

Okay folks, see you (hopefully) next week.
