"LOVE..."

“The world is so full of a number of things, I’m sure we should all be as happy as kings.” Robert Louis Stevenson. I swallowed that whole. My father bought me A Child’s Garden of Versus when I was a little girl. He filled my life with books, animals, my own room,  clean sheets,  a right to roam the woods, walk in the rain and climb trees.

Maybe that’s another reason why I didn't fall in love with the Great Father in the Sky, I had a perfectly good one right here on earth.

My father taught me to love so many things the list would  fill  three hundred pages.
Art? I love Georgia O’Keefe. The Impressionists, all of them. Modigliani and the great tragedy in his life has always made me cry while his portraits fill me with great joy.

Music? I sing along with Verdi. Cry with Puccini. Mozart. Sibelius. Loved the Beetles when it came time for that.

Dance? Wow! Ginger Rogers. Fred Astaire. Learned to love ballet later in life. Actually I taught ballet bar and center exercises in Manila and also at Kaneohe Marine base when the troops deployed for Vietnam. Today Billy Eliot is my newest best friend.

Architecture?  Frank Lloyd Wright. His Waterfall House sends my heart spinning. My youngest kid is an architect in Honolulu.

Drama? Don’t get me started. I was born an actress. Took to the theater like the moon takes to the sky. I love George Bernard Shaw best. Would love to do  Joan but I’m not built for it. She was androgynous, I’m  a little too round. Did  Eliza Dolittle in a musical skit, not the entire thing. Also  Susan B. Anthony. Fell in love with the American feminists,  I identify with Alice Paul.

Okay, I’m just a ninny, a beginner, not too deeply involved in any of these grand human gifts, not a connoisseur, but they are there in my store house and-guess what?-they can never be removed.
I love this planet- it sounds so stupid- but I've never found a better way to express it. I love it. If there were a god who created it, I could worship him; but another of my loves is mythology, which my father introduced me to early , so I think, if anybody created it, Gaea did. Trees, flowers, the sky, the sea, the grass, the birds….

Fell in love with the philosophers early. Spinoza. Bertrand Russell. Corliss Lamont. Voltaire.
Where am I going with this? Am I just patting myself on the back because I lived a loving and culturally enriched life?
One of  the curses laid on my head by the god icons on-line was that I live a hundred years and watch everything I love die.

If everything I loved died, everything on the planet-the planet, too- would die and, if that happened, so would  their earthly paradise. The sad part  is so many of them pray for this to happen.
I wish I could share all I love with them.

Pedophilia, something you are born with, or a choice..?" 'Obama Da Dog'

Who knows what will be twenty years from now?

Is pedophilia something you are born with, or is it a choice?

Let me answer that question with a question, is homosexuality something you are born with or a choice?

The debate goes both ways, some believe one is born homosexual and others believe it to be a choice. The reason being is many gays were once married to spouses of the opposite sex and raised families. Later in life they decided to experiment in other ways and basically changed preference.

The recent trial of Penn state football coach Jerry Sandusky has put pedophilia and child molestation back in the national spotlight. 

Is it possible 20 years from now pedophiles will be asking for marriage rights?  I  surely hope not.

AUGUST NEIGHBORHOOD GARAGE SALE

It’s that time of year again for our joint effort in our neighborhood for the annual garage sale. It’s time to rummage through the basement, closets and drawers to get rid of those items that clutter up our lives; the stuff that we think we needed to hold on to all these years.

This year I have decided to let go of the radio flyer red wagon that weighs about 80 lbs. When the boys were little, we would load them into the wagon and drag it through the neighborhood to playgrounds, pools etc and ask ourselves why this was so heavy. Even empty, it weighs a ton. Since we bought it 30 yrs ago, manufacturers have come out with new and light weight wagons that pull with ease and are much more convenient to care for. Older is not always better we have found.

It will be my mission in the next few weeks to gather the stuff we felt we had to hold on to for many years and turn it into a little jingle in our pockets.

Again, my motto…..less is more, will take over.

Detroit, 65 years after Hiroshima



We all know that Hiroshima and Nagasaki  were destroyed in August 1945 After the explosion of atomic bombs.
However, we know little about the progress made by the people of that land during the past 65 years.



HIROSHIMA - 65 YEARS LATER

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied 'hard' were upset and the students who studied 'little' were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied 'even less' and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied 'little'.

The second test average was a 'D'. No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that "socialism" would also ultimately 'fail' because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
Could not be any simpler than that.
Remember, there IS a test coming up. " elections sometime soon ? perhaps the sooner the better"

It's Aloha Friday... "Can We Talk?"

Aloha folks,

Seems like every day Apple or Google come out with a new hi-tech cell phone, and then Verizon or one of the other companies comes out with a new plan that everyone just has to have. (2G, 3G, 4G . . . what do those mean?)

It used to be that you could go away for the weekend and have peace and quiet. Now I doubt there anyplace on Earth where someone selling insurance can't reach you. Or maybe that important call is from someone guaranteeing to improve your love life . . . by adding inches to it.

It used to be that phones were for talking on. Now they're primarily for texting on.

Every day I read letters sent to Dear Amy, Dear Abby, Miss Manners and a dozen other etiquette gurus. All with the same topic. "How do I get my kids to stop texting at (the dinner table, when we're visiting relatives, in church, etc)?"

As a society, we're hurting. You've seen the joke about the couple sitting across the table from each other in a romantic restaurant, and texting each other? It's no longer a joke. "Hey, look at this picture of cute cat laughing." "Hilarious, but check out this picture of a naked guy streaking at a soccer game." "I think our waiter just brought our order. I'll send you a picture of it." "Looks delicious. Shall we eat?" "Hold on, my cousin Larry just texted me."

I visited some relatives recently, and after a perfunctory greeting from a high-school-age niece I watched her check-out for the rest of the evening with her cell phone. I guess she had a good time, too bad she couldn't spend some of it with us.

My mom taught me to engage strangers in conversation. I still enjoy striking up a conversation with someone behind me or in front of me while I wait in line at the grocery store of the bank. But lately it's much harder to do that. Everyone in line seems to be on their cell phones texting away. I think they do it partly to throw up a protective barrier around themselves. After all, you had to break in on a private conversation.

Except it's not a conversation. A conversation involves at least two people actually talking with each other. Preferably face-to-face. Talking on the phone counts, somewhat. But a good real conversation requires that you are able to see the other person's face. Read their emotions as they talk. See what effect you're words have on them. Can't do that with a cell phone text.

Thank G-d they are coming back in time for the season finale of "The Bachelorette," that's right the bachelorette, I admit I watch it, I watch it because it's so ridiculous, It should be called, "Rich White spoiled bratty kids try to get  a piece of you know what. I hate it so much I like it ,if that's possible." Airline executives in Hawai'i must be laughing all the way to the bank as the people of Hawai'i cry for reasonably priced airfares.

Traveling from Kaua'i to Oahu can cost as much as $200.00 per segment. the average round-trip for this short flight of less than 90 miles is now between and $300-$400. There are special airfares of $169.00 one way to Las Vegas from Honolulu, which is 1700 miles away. It's really sad that one can travel to Las Vegas (often times called the 9th Hawai'ian island) cheaper than they can to a neighbor island.
You can fly RT from Honolulu Hawai'i to Anchorage Alaska on Alaska airlines for approximately the same price you pay Hawaii'an and Go airlines for a round-trip from Kaua'i to Oahu.

The airlines are abusing Hawai'i people by overcharging.  Families cannot get away to visit relatives on neighbor islands, others with keiki in competitive sports cannot afford to travel to see their kids play sports on another island which was once a common thing.

We can't even have a decent protest and boycott the airlines, since there is no other form of inter-island transportation to support.

Back in 2006 when Go airlines came into the Hawai'i marketplace  all the airlines had limited seat  specials of $5.00 Round-trips, they were basically giving trips away as promotional specials. Regular discounted  fares were $39.00. I am not asking for a free ticket, just for a  decent  competitive priced ticket like most places in the world.

Many protested the Super-ferry  and were worried about drug dealers coming to our island, ironically now about the only ones who can afford to come to our island are those drug dealers  we so despised.

 We need a new airline to come into the market place and force some good old competition, or we need some rich entrepreneurs  to launch a Ferry boat business which hopefully would not be scared away this time around.

 Air travel  needs to be more affordable to the neighbor islands before the whole state of Hawaii  goes insane with chronic cabin fever.

Please airline CEOs if your reading this, do what's pono. You can still make money just don't continue taking us to the cleaners.
