Swimming in uncharted waters...

I suddenly find myself swimming in uncharted waters; recently my son decided to ask his girlfriend to marry him and I am filled with happiness and a whirlwind of emotions all at once. I have imagined many times that some day my sons would find their soul mates and start a family of their own but never thought I would experience such a plethora of feelings that I do these days.

Daily I find myself reflecting on the past; re living my sons’ childhood memories as he grew up to a be a young man. If only I could turn back the clock to family vacations, baseball leagues, school choirs we enjoyed watching so much, birthday parties, first steps, first dates, and so many wonderful memories that have slipped away. As we raise our children we always want them to someday be independent, responsible adults but it seems that those years have slipped by so quickly. How did my son grow so much older and taller? How did I get so old? And why is letting go so difficult? I have done my job, I have raised my son to be an independent, contributing young person and now a new chapter will start in our lives; he will be starting a new family with new memories to look back on. I can only hope and pray that he will enjoy his new independent life with his new fiancé as much as I did with my husband.

Judy, your blog reminds me of the song, Sunrise Sunset...

"Tevye)
Is this the little girl I carried?
Is this the little boy at play?

(Golde)
I don't remember growing older
When did they?

(Tevye)
When did she get to be a beauty?
When did he grow to be so tall?

(Golde)
Wasn't it yesterday
When they were small?

(Men)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly flow the days
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers
Blossoming even as we gaze

(Women)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

(Tevye)
What words of wisdom can I give them?
How can I help to ease their way?

(Golde)
Now they must learn from one another
Day by day

(Perchik)
They look so natural together

(Hodel)
Just like two newlyweds should be

(Perchik & Hodel)
Is there a canopy in store for me?

(All)
Sunrise, sunset
Sunrise, sunset
Swiftly fly the years
One season following another
Laden with happiness and tears

Douglas Dunn said via facebook;"Douglas Dunn Judtih: love this. I have mentioned before about my raising my daughter (JoAnn Dunn Schaub) alone as a single parent, from the time she was 3 months old until I remarried during her teenage years. I think we had (and still have) an especial...ly close relationship, largely because of this.

Every father worries about who their daughter will marry, and if the man she picks could ever be good enough for her (of course, no man ever could be). I was, once again, very blessed that my daughter found an amazing man, so incredible on so many levels, and that -- because my daughter is also such an amazing woman -- they made a good match.

I was so thrilled that she brought such a wonderful man into our family, and my daughter has equally been welcomed into his. They are truly a great match because they are BOTH such accomplished, successful individuals.

Kimo: Love your reference to the song “Sunrise, Sunset.”
It is the song my daugher and I danced to for the father/daughter dance at her wedding.
Especially considering the special experience I had with her, it was appropriate.

As you know, I also do sign language interpreting, and here is my rendition of the song in sign language. (Note, the full musical presentation follows a brief introduction in sign language).
