"The Air Conditioner saga..." (A cool story) 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

"Air conditioners may come and go, but there's still nothing like the fresh ocean breeze. I use my air conditioner primarily as a white noise machine, to block out the chitter chatter of neighbors...I know it's November and many of you are battling cold weather and I am blogging about a broken air conditioner. :D)
This is a cool story (pun intended) that happened last week...

Sixteen months ago I bought a Kenmore window type air conditioner from Sears. It quit working last week so I called customer service about my warranty, my warranty expired in May of 2011, one year after I bought it. I  sure wish I had bought the extended warranty for $60.00 at that time.

The person on the phone told me that there is a $97.00 fee just to see what's wrong and diagnose the problem, the same thing on the 'Mainland' United States is $65.00 and the $65.00 is applied towards your repair, however after much hoopla I was told the $97.00 is just to examine the air conditioner and any repair done in Hawaii is additional.

I scheduled the appointment and decide to take the gamble on the diagnosis, I wait from 8:00A.M.-12:00 P.M.  the guaranteed time they say they will be at my residence,  one o'clock came around and I had a doctors appointment at 2:00 therefore I call Sears and they feel bad and reschedule and give me a $50.00 credit towards my repair for not showing. The customer service rep tells me  that the  $50.00 is only good for the repair and not the $97.00 estimate.  I was somewhat disappointed but decide to reschedule for the following Wednesday.

In the interim I am shopping on Craigslist and see many used air conditioners and one in particular for $71.00. The lady says she will get back with the particulars, is it quiet, how old is it etc, I asked?  Even though I am ready to buy, she is not ready with answers or even ready to show it because she is so bogged down in work.

Sears comes and I show them what's wrong, within 2 seconds without touching the unit the repair-woman says, "I can tell you with-out touching it that it will cost you at least $190.00 for the repair alone not including the visit." The repair person sees the look of distress on my face and says to me, "I never touched the unit so I recommend you buy a new one." "If Sears calls for a follow-up tell them you just decided to buy a new one, Technically I was never here."

The repair-woman also stated make sure and buy the extended warranty next time, especially on the Hawaiian Islands electrical appliances take a beating from the salt air, and my place sits on a hill with the ocean slightly below. OK great advise, Mahalo Nui Loa, I replied. (Thank you very much)

I am thrilled I did not have to spend $97.00 just to be told my air conditioner was not repairable. I was ready to write off my Kenmore Air conditioner and look seriously for a new one with a warranty.  I decide for fun to give my air conditioner  one last  hard kick, I had kicked it a few times before calling customer service, but this time I really kicked it hard just out of frustration and low and behold, 'hallelujah' it starts spitting out cold air!

The air conditioner Goddess's decided that my Air conditioner needed a miracle healer and so be it, Amen. My air conditioner is fixed, for free, just with a kick. The moral of the story when your AC is sick give it a kick!

(The names of the air conditioner and store may have been changed to protect the guilty.... other than that this story is the truth!)

"I am A Jew" 'Dan Sporn, from the Internet'

Danny waves a Lulav and Etrog giving thanks for the Harvest during the recent Jewish holiday of Sukkot! Friday at sundown begins the weekly Jewish festival of shabbat. (The Sabbath) Shabbat Shalom to all... (Good day of rest to everyone...)

I am a Jew
Written by an Israeli named Dan Sporn
Our condition, in Israel , has never been better than it is now! Only
The television and the media make other people think that the end of the
World is near.. Only 65 years ago, Jews were brought to death like
sheep to slaughter. NO country, NO army.
Only 60 years ago Seven Arab countries declared war on little Israel , the Jewish State, within hours after it was established.

We were 650,000 Jews against the rest of the Arab world. No IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) or Air Force. We were only a Small group of stubborn people with nowhere to go.
Remember: Lebanon , Syria , Iraq , Jordan , Egypt , Libya , and Saudi Arabia , they all attacked at once. The state that the United Nations "gave" us was 65% desert.
We started it from Zero.

Only 41 years ago, we fought three of the most powerful countries
In the Middle East , and we crushed them in the Six Day War.
Over the years we fought different coalitions of 20 Arab countries with modern armies and with huge amounts of Russian-Soviet weapons... and we still won.
Today we have a Beautiful Country, a Powerful Army, a Strong
Air Force, an adequate Navy and a thriving high tech industry.
Intel, Microsoft, and IBM have all developed their businesses Here.
Our Doctors have won important Prizes in the Medical Development field.
We turned the desert into a prosperous land. We sell oranges, flowers, and vegetables around the world.
We launched our own (Israeli developed) satellite! Three satellites at once! We
Are in good company; together with the USA (280 million Residents), Russia (220 million residents), China (1.3 Billion residents) and Europe ( France , England and Germany 350 million residents), we are one of the very few countries in the
World that have launched something into space!
Israel today is among the few powerful countries that have Nuclear technology & capabilities. (We will never admit it, But everyone knows.)
To think that only 65 years ago we were denigrated and hopeless.
We crawled out from the burning crematoriums of Europe .
We won in all our wars. With a little bit of nothing we created Super status.
Who are Khaled Mashal (leader of Hamas) or Hassan Nasrallah
(leader of Hezbollah) thinking they can frighten us? They just amuse us.

As we celebrate Independence Day, let's not forget what this
Holiday is all about; we overcame everything.
We overcame the Greeks,התגברנו על היוונים,We overcame the Romans,
We overcame the Spanish Inquisition,
We overcame the Russians pogroms,התגברנו על הפוגרום הרוסי,We overcame Hitler. We overcame Germany and overcame the
Holocaust,
We overcame the combined armies of Seven Countries at once.. Relax 'chevre' (friends), we will overcome our current enemies too.
It doesn't matter where you look in human history, just think about The Jewish Nation, our condition has never been better than now. So let's lift our heads up and remember:
לא משנה לאן שנביט בהיסטוריה האנושית. תחשבו על זה, העם היהודי, מצבנו מעולם לא היה טוב יותר מאשר עכשיו.
אז בואו נישא ראשנו מעלה וזכרו:
It does not matter which country or culture tries to harm us or erase us From the world. We will still survive and persevere.
Egypt ? Anyone knows where the Egyptian empire disappeared to? The Greeks?
Alexander Macedon? The Romans? Is anyone speaking Latin today?
The Third Reich? Has anyone heard news from them lately?

And look at us; The Bible Nation – from slavery in Egypt , we are Still here
and still speaking the same language. Exactly here, exactly now.

Maybe The Arabs don't know it yet, but we are an Eternal Nation.
For as long as we keep our identity intact, we will Stay Eternal.

So, excuse us for not worrying, complaining, crying, or fearing…
Business here is 'beseder' (fine). It can definitely improve - but still fine. Don't pay attention to the nonsense in the (foreign) media. They will NOT tell you about our festivities here in Israel or our Good life, entertainment, meeting friends, etc.
Yes, sometimes morale is down, so what? This is only because we sometimes
mourn our dead - while they celebrate spilled blood.
This is the reason why, inspite of this, we will always win.

This blog may help some of us lift our heads up and be
Proud to say:

"I was a hunk?" 'Michael Herr' (Aloha Friday)

Renowned author Michael Herr is back guest-blogging on this awesome Aloha Friday about a little  secret he never  knew about himself in High school.... Make sure and check out Michael's website at; http://www.michaelherr.com/

ALOHA FRIDAY
November 11

It's Aloha Friday.

"I was a hunk?"

Before I retired, sometime in either '98 or '99, I was working late at the Adult School where I was the Director. I was helping with registering students for a new quarter.

After I registered one student, a woman of about my age, said that she knew me and that we had been in high school together. I didn't remember her but vaguely recalled her when she told me her name. As she turned to leave she said something like this: "You know, all of us girls thought you were a real hunk back in high school."

After she left I went back to my office to puzzle through this new piece of information. Girls at my old high school almost forty years ago had thought I was a hunk? Damn, how come none of them told me that back then?

When I was in elementary school I was definitely not a hunk. I was chubby. I was one of the first kids in my class to have to wear glasses. I was uncoordinated and awful at baseball and football and basketball. My hair was terrible; my mom started me out on crew-cuts early and I never was able to grow my hair long enough to comb it with any success. Girls were a mystery; a delightful mystery I constantly wished I could solve.

But after this encounter with a classmate from my past, I decided to review my high school yearbook. Wow, I sure looked different then. By high school I had lost my chubby baby fat. I had muscled up from participating in swim team and wrestling team. I actually looked good. So why didn't any of the girls back then tell me so?

I had one girlfriend in high school. A pity-girlfriend that one of my buddies set me up with (his chubby cousin). I tried dating only one other girl in high school. Took her to dinner and a theatrical play in the city. When I pulled up in front of her house at the end of the evening she jumped out of the car and was in through her front door before I even got my door opened. Never knew why she reacted that way.

If only. If only the "girls" had told me they thought I was a hunk. If only I had been able to step back and look at myself objectively. If only I could go back in time and tell my high school self what I know now. If only.

Ah well, at least I now know that once upon a time the girls all thought I was a "hunk".

Much aloha.

"Palindromes..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen

Palindromes are words that spell the same backwards as they do forward, Palindromes never really made it
into the  mainstream world of words...

There are approximately 50-100 words in the English Language that spell the same backwards as they do forward. These words are called " PALINDROMES."

"Mom sees Bob Kayak, wow!" I just made a sentence out of 5 Palindromes. Other palindromes worth noting, Civic, Dad, Deed, Did, Deified, Bib, Aha, Ewe, Eve, Dud, Gag, gig, Hah, Heh,Huh,, Level, Madam, Noon, Nun, Stats, Sexes and the list goes on.

Palindromes never got the attentions in grammar school that synonyms and opposites did, I wonder why?

Any word with the prefix of 'Palin' you just know is going to be different. Once you start  searching for 'Palin'-dromes you may start to see Russia from your backyard. (Just kidding all my republican friends) How many Palindromes can you think of?

"Time to expand Farmers Market's..." James "Kimo" Rosen

Maybe it's time the farmers market's became Farmers Market's plus more..?
Please note, this could apply to Farmers market's anywhere in the country, not just Kaua'i Hawai'i...

In response to the recent article in the Kauai Garden Island News, "Farmers (only) Markets,(http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/article_5bf68a2e-02d8-11e1-97d9-001cc4c03286.html )   the article  states that many vendors sell produce that was not grown on their own farms or gardens and are selling produce purchased from wholesalers which was not the original criteria for farmers markets on Kaua'i.

There are also those  people that sell fish, chicken eggs, and even discounted potato chips and other closeouts from the supermarkets just outside the farmers market's. Locals sell their Ahi from their pickup beds just outside the market too.

Many rules are broken with vendors selling produce that is not from their farms or gardens,  however in these recessed times if somebody can make a few extra bucks in the 90 minute time-frame they have, go for it! The article states that it takes many hours and a court date to even enforce the policy of the farmers market and there just isn't the manpower to enforce the rules.

Maybe it's time for  the farmers market's to expand  and make rule changes allowing more items for sale? And if some vendor happens to sell pickled Mangoes, chili pepper water or even produce they bought from a wholesaler it's time to turn the other cheek and not report your neighbor.

"Anger Management..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau' (via the Internet)

"Dakinetalks good friend Chester Lau a.k.a. "Unc,"  is a retired cinematographer living on Oahu guest-blogging about anger management and one of the many ways it works..."

Anger Management ...
"When you occasionally have a really bad day,
and you just need to take it out on someone,
don't take it out on someone you know,
take it out on someone you don't know,
but you know deserves it.

I was sitting at my desk when I remembered
a phone call I'd forgotten to make.

I found the number and dialed it.
A man answered, saying
'Hello.'

I politely said,
'This is Chris.
Could I please speak with Robyn Carter?'

Suddenly a manic voice yelled out in my ear
'Get the right f***ing number!'
And the phone was slammed down on me.

I couldn't believe that anyone could be so rude.

When I tracked down Robyn's correct number
to call her,
I found that I had accidentally transposed the last two digits.

After hanging up with her,
I decided to call the 'wrong' number again.

When the same guy answered the phone, I yelled
'You're an asshole!'
And hung up.

I wrote his number down with the word 'asshole' next to it,
And put it in my desk drawer.

Every couple of weeks, when I was paying bills or had a really bad day,
I'd call him up and yell,
'You're an asshole!'

It always cheered me up.

When Caller ID was introduced, I thought my therapeutic 'asshole'
calling would have to stop.

So, I called his number and said,
'Hi, this is John Smith from the telephone company.
I'm calling to see if you're familiar with our
Caller ID Program?'

He yelled 'NO!'
And slammed down the phone.

I quickly called him back and said, 'That's because you're an asshole!'
And hung up.

One day I was at the store, getting ready to pull into a parking spot.

Some guy in a black BMW cut me off and pulled into the spot
I had patiently waited for.

I hit the horn and yelled that I'd been waiting for that spot,
but the idiot ignored me.

I noticed a 'For Sale ' sign in his back window,
so I wrote down his number.

A couple of days later,
right after calling the first asshole
(I had his number on speed dial)
I thought that I'd better call the BMW asshole, too.

I said, 'Is this the man with the black BMW for sale?'

He said, 'Yes, it is.'

I then asked, 'Can you tell me where I can see it?'

He said, 'Yes, I live at  34 Oaktree Blvd., in  Fairfax
It's a yellow ranch style house
And the car's parked right out in front.'

I asked, 'What's your name?'

He said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

I asked, 'When's a good time to catch you, Don?'

He said, 'I'm home every evening after five.'

I said, 'Listen, Don, can I tell you something?'

He said, 'Yes?'

I said, 'Don, you're an asshole!'

Then I hung up, and added his number to my speed dial, too.

Now, when I had a problem, I had two assholes to call.

Then I came up with an idea...

I called asshole #1.

He said, 'Hello'

I said, 'You're an asshole!'
(But I didn't hang up.)

He asked, 'Are you still there?'

I said, 'Yeah!'

He screamed, 'Stop calling me'

I said, 'Make me.'

He asked, 'Who are you?'

I said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

He said, 'Yeah? Where do you live?'

I said, 'Asshole, I live at 34 Oaktree Blvd. , in  Fairfax ,
a yellow ranch style home and
I have a black Beamer parked in front.'

He said, 'I'm coming over right now, Don.
And you had better start saying your prayers.'

I said, 'Yeah, like I'm really scared, asshole,'
and hung up.

Then I called Asshole #2.

He said, 'Hello?'

I said, 'Hello, asshole,'

He yelled, 'If I ever find out who you are...'

I said, 'You'll what?'

He exclaimed, 'I'll kick your ass'

I answered, 'Well, asshole, here's your chance.
I'm coming over right now.'

Then I hung up and immediately called the police, saying that I was on my way over to
34 Oaktree Blvd , in Fairfax , to kill my gay lover.

Then I called Channel 7 News about the gang war going down in Oaktree Blvd  in  Fairfax .
I quickly got into my car and headed over to  Fairfax .

I got there just in time to watch two assholes beating the crap out of each other
in front of six cop cars, an overhead news helicopter
and surrounded by a news crew.

NOW I feel much better.

Anger management really does work."

"What was the most important day of your life..."?'Judith Whitehead' (Inspirational Monday)

Judith Whitehead is back guest-blogging on this Inspirational Monday about what's important in life...Judith lives in Amherst N.Y.  She has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for almost 30 years...

As a child, I grew up in a 2 parent, loving family that could have been portrayed as the “Leave it to Beaver” family. Dinner was served on time every night, after all were seated at the table. Family vacations were taken often and since my dad was “on the road” for his sales profession, we also traveled with him when we weren't in school and sampled hotels and restaurants across the East Coast. There were 2 siblings in our household and we never went for want. My dad was a good provider and my mom was a stay at home mom who made the house sparkle on a daily basis.

Naturally as I grew up into a young woman, I began to day dream of the home I also
would have some day. I did go to school after graduating high school, but only to obtain
an associates degree in Medical Assisting. My aspirations were not lofty and I assumed I
would some day marry to have my husband be the major breadwinner of the family, and I
would contribute until the children were born. I also wanted 2 children as my family had.

My dreams came true at the young age of 18. I married a young man of 21 who was still
finishing college and we started our life together. For the first few years we worked hard
at our jobs as my husband finished his college education. After a few more years we
began to think of a starting a family and our 2 wonderful boys were born within 3 years
of each other. Our family was complete and I was the proudest mother that walked the earth. As the years passed by, I grew along with my children in desires, wants and goals.

What I desired as a young woman no longer aligned with my goals of the day, and I began to think I had made a hasty decision in only obtaining a 2 year degree. It turns out, I liked to be out in the working world and although my children came first, I was not the “leave it to Beaver” type of mom. Cooking and cleaning was not enough to satisfy me and I enjoyed being out contributing in some way using the profession I had obtained in my teens. I felt slighted that I had not gotten that 4 year degree and knew I could command a better salary if I had those credentials in hand.

I knew I had to still work to help support the family, so I began my plan to slowly go
back to school for a Bachelors degree at night while working during the day. It wasn't
until the age of 39 that I could finally do this. One by one I picked off each course that I
needed to attain my goal, and by the age of 45 I finally could say I was a college graduate of the State University of Buffalo. My only regret was that my mother passed away the year before I graduated and she didn't get to see my accomplishment, but I know somehow she knows.

This was one of the most Important Days of My Life. I never had the drive or ambition
as a teenager to deliver this goal. I didn't really know what I wanted at that young age,
marriage and children were still important to me but I needed to have that ultimate feeling of accomplishment to feel complete.

Today I work in the medical field still and my children are grown up. They don’t need
me as much as when they were little, but I’m still around to give advice when asked and
still enjoy their company immensely. Now I look forward to having grand-children some
day and sit back and watch my sons enjoy the family life I have enjoyed for all these wonderful years.
