On the cover of last week’s Parade was a picture of the very glamorous Jane Fonda at 73.  Very few of us looked that good at 27, let alone 73, but-trust me here-we can all do as Jane did, age gracefully and graciously. Her secret? She started young, she was born beautiful, but that’s not the point. The point is, she took care of herself, and taking care of yourself can’t begin too young.

The main and most important quality of aging gracefully is good health. That’s where it starts and that’s where it ends. There is nothing more  appealing than good health, at whatever age. And YOU and YOU alone are responsible for that. You must decide today, you can’t start any younger, that’s what you want from life. Work towards that end and-trust me-baring some serious misadventure over which you have no control, it will pay off.  Money, jewels, clothes, big cars, rich mates, fame, mean nothing if you’re not healthy.

So how does one attain that goal?  First of all, don’t get fat. This is not to say that if you’re born big-boned, with a tendency to plumpness, that’s not attractive.  Big girls grow up to be big women and, if that’s you, that’s you, but don’t contribute to it. Not all of us can be as slim, long and lanky as Jane, but we needn’t end up looking like a circus tent, either. Whatever healthy pounds you carry will depend on your natural build. Consider it, keep it, and love it. If you’re into the ‘man thing’-or the ‘woman thing’-lots of  others love it, too. Don’t you dare let anyone tell you that because you’re big you’re unattractive. Carry yourself proudly, carry yourself well, we can’t all look like Twiggy's. Anyhow, that’s just the style today. It can change tomorrow.

Find out who you are, how you like yourself, love yourself, and stay put. Be happy
there, because happiness with yourself counts, too.

Before I dig deep into how we do this, I’d like to share an experience with Jane.
I met her first in Honolulu at the home of a Quaker family in Manoa into whose home Jane and the others in the musical production FREE THE ARMY SHOW were invited after the performance; which was packed, by the way. I felt so much older than she. So much more burdened. I had a kid in that war. She seemed free, young, and doing something important. What she considered-me, too-the most important thing in her life at that time: protesting the war in Vietnam.  She made mistakes, plenty of them, but she did what she had to do. And, you know what? That’s part of the aging process, too.

I won’t go into the political end of it. In tomorrow’s column, I’ll discuss some important tips and clues as to where to begin right now.

The Hawai'i wardrobe
is very simple, nobody
notices if you lose or gain weight.


Nobody notices when you lose or gain weight in Hawai'i  because so many people dress like me. We wear our elastic band shorts with a t-shirt on size too big along with Hawaiian slippahs that would fit half the population.
Wearing an outfit like this makes it easy to gain weight without even noticing, since you have about a 30 lb  variance in either direction.

I have been dieting and recently lost about 15 lbs and nobody seemed to notice, I am still wearing the same clothes, elastic band shorts, t-shirt, head-band and slippahs.

I guess the beauty of  Hawai'i is the style of clothes we wear, you can weigh 160 or 200 and still wear the same clothes. The Hawai'i wardrobe does nothing  for a good body, but can sure hide alot of imperfections.

I have written in the past about technology and how we have become more dependent on it and less communicative face to face with people since texting, computers, e-mail and many other modes of getting our thoughts across to other people have come along.

 There is one mode of communication that has made a huge difference in my life this century; 'Facebook' has put me in touch with so many dear people that I had lost touch with over the years. Its become a wonderful way to re kindle old relationships, catch up with people from the past and partake in the joy of others as they share their pictures, stories and happy times.

It’s one of the first things I look at in the morning and the last thing I check before I retire for the night.
It’s given me joy and sadness all at the same time and has become an amazing tool to use throughout the day.

Thank you Mr. Zukerberg for your contribution to our society.

Imagine today's Contrarians, Hippies and Yuppies contemplating over developments back in the early 1900's.
Imagine the time is many years ago and  Kaua'i is about to construct the Kuhio hwy, imagine the anti-development people of today living back then? They would say to no to a  highway, because they hear cars cause cancer from the exhaust and prefer to stay in their horse and buggy. 

 Imagine the time comes to build an airport and the people are concerned with noise pollution and  the potential of birds crashing into airplanes?

Imagine when telephones became popular and telephone poles needed to be erected, what about eye pollution, what about the radiation put off by the wires?

Imagine any of the modern conveniences of today having to be approved by environmental impact studies back when they were first introduced into society?

I am thankful the people of today did not live back then, otherwise I am sure we would still be using the pony express! Not that's there anything wrong with that. ;D)

Yes folks, Hershey’s has a new Butterscotch Kiss. Look carefully. Can you believe more than one person bought these shorts? Is that injured foot from kicking your own BUTT, or for wearing that out in public?  So! Exactly how many sizes  too small would you say this outfit is?  If you woke up in good spirits this morning,  this should ruin the rest of your day!  Should I buy the pies  or plain bread?  Oh dear God!  This must be what a cougar is.  Dang, it’s hot in here, good thing I clipped the legs on these pj's.  Nothing runs like a Deere!  Yeah, the ankle weights are  going to make a BIG difference!  I didn’t know I could buy  a table dance at Walmart too!  It's bring sexy back, not bring sexy across your whole back-side!  Honey, when I'm done WITH the potato salad,  can ya pass the dog food!  I know they look good,  but tell me, are they even?  Like removing the flip-flops  makes a big difference ???  Doesn't the flowered bra  just bring the whole outfit together?  You go girl! This summer  it's all about the layered look?  No Sir, I'm not coming back into the store  with you, .......I paid for the melons.  Oh good! A gut-crack instead  of all those butt-cracks!  Bought a paper shredder yesterday...  Love it! Love it!  Please tell me, she's wearing a thong!  To do list: ....... Quick stop to the candy isle  before bartending at Bubba's Bar & Grill.  AND THE WALMART WINNER IS....................  When you can't find your BRA just  Stuff them in your pants!

What's your gripe?Aloha folks,

What went wrong for you today? Did you gripe about it to your coworkers? Did you complain to your spouse? Did you let your kids know that they shouldn't bother you because something else was already bothering you? Did you hold it all in and just blow up later? And nobody knew why you suddenly let go like that?
Or did you take it out in other ways? Did you cut someone off in traffic and grin at their frustration? Did you let the door swing shut behind you rather than holding it open for the person following you? When someone cut you off in traffic did you pound your steering wheel, race to catch up with them and then flip them off before driving away?

What went wrong with you today?
Was the traffic really heavy driving home from work? But you were driving. Not walking. In your own car. You weren't thumbing a ride and hoping against hope that someone would pick you up because your feet hurt so bad and the pavement was so hot under them.

Did the price of gas rattle you today? But you had the money to pay for it, no matter if it was more than last week. And the station had gas to sell you; unlike not so many years ago when we sat in long lines for hours just to get a few gallons of gas.

Did your boss pile the work on you today? Or did he find something wrong with what you did yesterday and told you to do it over? But he didn't fire you. You've still got a job. You've still got a paycheck.
Did you notice when you got home from work that your house needs painting? That's gonna cost you. But it's still your house, isn't it? You're not one of those being forced out by foreclosure. You still have your home. No cardboard box in some alley for you.
Was dinner late tonight? And was it less than scrumptious? But it was satisfying. It was hot. And it filled that empty space in your stomach.

Did your child bring home a less than glowing report from school? But did your child come home from school safe and sound? Do you feel confident about your child playing outside your house in your own yard?

Couldn't get to sleep tonight? Did your mind refuse to turn off, thinking about the traffic, the price of gas, the work you have to catch up on tomorrow, the note from your child's teacher, the peeling paint on your house?

Maybe if you turn those things around. If you think about how much better it is to drive your own car to work, rather than walk. If you think about the money you do have, rather than the money you wish you had. If you think about how lucky you are to have a job, a house, food to put on your table and healthy children. Maybe if you think about those things you'll have one more thought before going to sleep.

What do I have to gripe about?
