 Are the children raising the Parents today?

Working in the  medical field for the last 35 years I have pretty much seen it all.  

The most annoying thing of all is when parents have a medical appointment and they bring the small children with them who are out of control.  They tell the parent what they want to do and become disruptive to the entire office and staff. They run in and out of rooms, have tantrums when they don't get their way and make it near impossible to examine the patient. What happened to the child who can sit quietly and play with a toy you have brought to occupy them? They were taught to use their manners in public. 

I even had a woman who in the middle of her examination started to nurse her 3 year old while I was trying to ask her relevant 
questions.  I know it is not  always easy to find someone to watch your small children but in a routine exam that was planned out, it seems more thought can go into child care prior to the exam.

Jack Lord was a real professional and he expected his crew to do the same.

 When I worked for Hawaii Five O,they  hired me as a set wardrobe supervisor,why not as a camera person? Since the  Hollywood camera union claimed jurisdiction on films originating from Hollywood and they  forbid any one not in their union to work on camera jobs.  the situation was later resolved but I had to go to Hollywood for tests to obtain my camera card to continue work with 5-O .

Jack paid major attention on make up,hair  and wardrobe,because if these 3 crafts were messed up,the whole days production  including shooting is useless, money down the drain !!! Why ? Because movie shooting doesn't  follow the script in the sequences as written ,or when an actor while during a scene  unconscionably loosens his tie knot 3 inches,the wardrobe guy better take note.  After 12 or 14  hours work day,the company called a wrap to continue the next day, wow! the next day ,wardrobe,make up & hair must match or the scenes  are  useless  !!!

One episode involved a fictional death in the family,the scene was filmed in Jack's  Five-O office where lights can be dimmed to set the mood of the scene. Jack was so taken by the story line that he had the whole production crew in silence,no talking or movement. He actually cried doing the scene. We were are all taken aback by his acting to go from chasing criminals to a dramatic scene.

After the successful take of the scene,I took the liberty of bringing him a cup of water ,he sips the water then looked up with appreciative eyes and said, 'who said action is easy?"

 Tales from the original Hawaii-Five-O are from my memory of over a  half a century ago. I will do more if memory can recall all the fun  and  hard work.

Wild Hurricanes I Have Known

 I've weathered four.  My husband and I escaped the ravages of Typhoon Jean, dodging caribou and ballistic teak logs the size of a Kauai bus shooting by us in a Philippine Airline jet taking off from a beach in Aparri, a primitive village in the province of Cagayan, Luzon-one bar, one outdoor movie, one hotel- on the banks of the South China Sea.  Aparri survived. Today it's a first class municipality.

We made the fastest flight- ever- back to Manila that day. Jean was the biggest typhoon of the season.

A typhoon is a hurricane that swirls and whirls and rips around in another neighborhood.

The Aparri memory is a cute story I tell often.

But hurricanes are not cute. No one can ever say 'been there, done that' or 'seen one seen 'em all' . Platitudes don't apply. Each storm's different. They've personalities all their own, and always a very human side.

In 1970 we were in Mississippi a year after Hurricane Camille demolished Gulfport and were amazed at the mess. A tug boat still  balanced  on its keel in the middle of a forest. It looked as though it'd just been planted. Along millionaire's row, all a two story mansion had to show for itself were water pipes standing upright indicating bathrooms on a vanished second floor.

Hurricane Iwa-November 22, 1982-sent our beloved boat, Warpath in Kukuiula Harbor, over the top of a swimming pool and broke her back. She was headed for safe port in the red barn across the street.  We'd built the barn for $900.00. All by myself I tar- papered the roof. Not a corner  lifted. On Kauai's millionaire's row, it looked as though a war had gone through.

I'd spent a terrifying night in the barn with my horses in the lava rock house up the Alexander Dam Road. All I was was the howl of that wind

Bill-who was needed at the power plant in Wainiha- and I, coming home that  night, had a most incredible surprise in store for us.. On the north shore at Tahiti Nui, Louise Marston  prepared-on the beach-a Thanksgiving dinner to end all Thanksgiving dinners-the works-to those who could find their way to her open door. A generous, marvelous, wonderful woman, I miss her. We sat at a savory table with locals, hippies, surfers, tourists from everywhere, survivors, and indulged. I've never felt so thankful. I didn't say grace but I thought it.

Back home, we'd just put the roof on our new house. Not a shingle lifted.

September 11, 1992, Iniki- the strongest storm to hit Hawaii-barreled through. I was alone. I spent the night here.  Three horses locked in stalls. Me and the dogs and cats hunkered down in my old Buick. I had carrots for the horses, nibbles for the dog and cats, and a bottle of wine for me. Before the night was over, the horses were eating dog food while the dogs and cats munched carrots. I didn't share the wine.

My experienced advice during hurricane season? Be prepared.

  A police officer stopped a motorist who was speeding down Main Street.

"Just be quiet," snapped the officer. "I'm going to let you cool your heels in jail until the chief gets back."
"But, officer, I just wanted to say," "And I said to keep quiet! You're going to jail!"

The Modern Day Bully

 One of the major forms of modern day bullying are comment boards  that are available in almost every major periodical.

The worst commenters are the ones who hide behind fake screen names, monikers  or post anonymous. 
It's easy to throw rocks at someone if they don't see who you are. Commenters need to man up and if you have something to say let us know who you are, after-all you know who we (the writers) are. Whats fare is fare.

Look at most of the comments to stories and even to the letters to editors, most comments are very venomous towards the writer. A journalist named Shawn Vestal, a columnist  for the  Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane, Washington  wrote a column comparing anonymous commenters to monkeys "throwing poop" — 

Check out the Facebook pages of any professional sports team or TV show and most comments are hateful.
Check out the editorial page in your local newspaper and forum pages. Many of  the  comments are bound to  be mean spirited, degrading and negative.

How can we ever expect world peace when we cannot even respect differing  opinions, even on a local level?
Is this not the modern day bully?

My vote is for The Garden Island Newspaper (TGI) to  implement a rule that if you wish to comment you must use your legal name, same as writing a letter to the editor.  This will assure for less potential legal actions and liabilities.

A weekend to celebrate 

This weekend we will be celebrating my daughter-in-laws birthday. Birthdays are always  a great way to have an uplifting  weekend. Simchas (Good times) are the way to go.  We will go to Audrey's favorite restaurant  and eat her favorite cake and enjoy our time together...

Olay, a Mexican delicacy

A Texan stopped at a local restaurant following a day of drinking and roaming around in Mexico. While sipping his tequila, he noticed a sizzling, scrumptious looking platter being served at the next table. 
  
Not only did it look good, the smell was wonderful. He asked the waiter, "What is that you just served?" 
  
The waiter replied, "Ah senor, you have excellent taste! Those are bull's testicles from the bull fight this morning. A delicacy!" 
  
The cowboy, though momentarily daunted, said, "What the heck, I'm on vacation down here! Bring me an order!" 
  
The waiter replied, "I am so sorry senor. There is only one serving per day because there is only one bull fight each morning. If you come early tomorrow and place your order, we will be sure to save you this delicacy"! 
  
The next morning, the cowboy returned, placed his order, and then that evening he was served the one and only special delicacy of the day. 
  
After a few bites, and inspecting the contents of his platter, he called to the waiter and said, "These are delicious, but they are much, much smaller than the ones I saw you serve yesterday!" 
  
The waiter shrugged his shoulders and replied, "Si, Senor. Sometimes the bull wins."

Life is not about how far you can go, how high you can jump, or how much weight you can carry. Life is about experience, friendship, family, and the memories they leave with us. Why is it, that so many people are afraid of old age when the years enrich us? This presentation is a lovely reminder that no matter how old you may be, you should always be full of life, even more than when you were young.
