"A Good Mentor Can Change Everything..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the
ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years...
Today she talks about having good role models and mentors, it
can change your life... Enjoy! ;D)

A Good Mentor Can Change Everything

Many years ago I completed my degree in medical assisting and one of the first positions I took was with a most uninspiring and miserable boss.

After enduring that position for a year, I decided there had to be something better and decided to peruse the want ads for a more inspiring position. I had a few jobs in between that worked out well; one thing led to another and we decided to start a family and open a Stride Rite shoe store. We worked the store for a few years and when it came time to close it, I began to search for a position in ophthalmology once again.

This time I was very particular. I needed to work with someone who would appreciate my skills and increase my knowledge in the field. I found such a person who would become my mentor for the next several years, someone who would share his knowledge with me and let me grow into the technician I am today.

A mentor can come in many forms; he or she can be a teacher, a leader or employer, among many things. It is very hard to find people who will share their day and knowledge with you while boosting your ego all at the same time. His inspiration made me want to be the best I could be. I pursued certification in this field and returned to college to obtain my degree in gerontology, all because I had the confidence to obtain those goals, all because I had a mentor who believed in me.

It is so important these days to spend your life doing something you love and doing it for someone who appreciates you and the gifts you have to offer. Now that I am nearing the end of my 50s, I appreciate more than ever what that one boss did for me so many years ago. I have awakened skills that I never knew I could have and have tried to pay it forward over the years.

Many people work in dead end jobs for many years of their short lives just going along and suddenly realizing that they are approaching the fall of their lives. We are working much longer than ever before because of the economic conditions in our country, and we had better wake up and find something we enjoy doing to fill our days.

I was lucky. My mentor showed me the way, gave me the inspiration to pursue my goals and continued to inspire me for many years.

My message is simple: Don’t stay in a job that doesn’t inspire you to grow. Look for something that makes you feel worthwhile, something that gives you a sense of accomplishment each day. Maybe you can become someone’s mentor. Let the career you choose make you happy every day and if you are not happy, don’t put off looking for something else.

"You Sure Look Healthy..!" James "Kimo" Rosen'

Beware when  people say, "you sure look healthy!"

You Sure Look Healthy

Many people including myself seem to gain weight during the winter months, shorter days and not being as active can lead to added pounds, along with a healthy appetite.

I thought I was getting compliments from the few  friends and neighbors that  still speak to me, they were  saying, you sure look healthy!" I took it as a compliment, although I really don't feel that healthy. Then I realized they were trying to tell me in a polite way, wow you sure look fat, what happened?

Now with the longer and warmer days I hope to shed a few pounds and hopefully next time someone says, "you sure look healthy," it's because I''m strutting a new  six pack, and I'm not talking about Budweiser.

"The Invisible War..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesday)

Bettejo  has lived on Kaua'i over 30 years and is a people lover,
animal lover, lover of life and strikes a dashing yoga pose...
Today Bettejo blogs  about the invisible war... Enjoy!
Enjoy...

The Invisible War

First of all I want to thank the YWCA for bringing to Kaua'i the Academy Award nominated documentary, The Invisible War.

As for the hypocritical political apologists, especially  Hawai'i Senator Mazie Hirono and Congress-woman  Tulsi Gabbard ( I paraphrase, “…gee guys we know it’s bad but we have a ‘relationship’ with the military so please write your Congressman...” this is my offering to you: ten hard whacks between the ears with my trusted shillelagh.

What can we do? All of us have kids and grand-kids and neighbors and friends who have kids and grand-kids  see that these most precious possessions are protected from this madness. Keep them out of the hands of the military.

I would especially like to address all Kauai’s-and America’s - wonderful teachers and school Principals: think for a moment, ‘dolled up’ recruiters stalk your halls. The military is recruiting kids in the 4th Grade!!!

I think some bloody red ripe rotten tomatoes splashed across the front of their pristine uniforms might help.

Peace and love...

"Jewish Sex..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau' (Source)

Dakinetalks favorite Uncle (Chester Lau)
Unc talks  about  his favorite subject, sex!
"Unc" is a retired cinematographer currently living
on the Hawai'ian Island of Oahu & giving the politicians a bad time...

The Italian man said, 'Last week my wife and I had great sex when I rubbed her body all over with olive oil and we made passionate love and she screamed for five full minutes at the end."

The Frenchman boasted, 'Last week when my wife and I had sex, I rubbed her body all over with butter and made passionate love and she screamed for fifteen minutes.'

The Jewish man said, well last week my wife and I also had sex and I rubbed her body all over with schmaltz (chicken fat) and we made love and she screamed for over six hours.

The other two were stunned and the amazed Frenchman asked, 'What could you have possibly done to make your wife scream for six hours?'

The Jewish man said, 'I wiped my hands on the bedspread.

"Stop wars, Jews to love Arabs,Protestants to love Catholics.Hindus to love Muslims & WAR  MACHINES WILL GO BELLY UP !!! WE HOPE!!!!"   Chester "Unc" Lau

"Eating organic really is not that healthy after all..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

What really aids longevity? Some say happiness, some say diet, some say genetics?
The answer is different with everyone.

Eating organic really is not that healthy after all

If carbonated beverages, french fries and fried chicken also known as comfort foods were known as healthy alternative foods would you eat them more often?

Costco recently sold a batch of organic berries from Oregon where 87 people nationwide including  5 people in Hawai'i  contacted the  Hepatitis A virus.
http://www.komonews.com/news/health/Hepatitis-A-linked-to-frozen-berries-sickens-Washington-211038151.html

Sometimes eating organic really is not that healthy after all.

Did you know that the french fries at Burger King  are cooked in trans fat-free vegetable oil and do not contain animal products, while the side salad ranch dressing alone has 240 calories, making the value sized  french fries with 200 calories a more healthy alternative to a side salad and dressing.

My brother in laws brother a strict vegetarian for many years and the poster child for eating healthy died a young man at age 55 from Leukemia, an obese friend  of mine who ate whatever she wanted her whole life lived into her mid 80's.

What really aids longevity? Some say happiness, some say diet, some say genetics?

The answer seems  different with everyone.

Is it possible many things we know are wrong concerning health? Remember one mans meat is another mans poison.

Just in 06-16-13 6:45 P.M. I am sorry to report that Dakinetalk's good friend  Shrili Green  lost her battle with cancer today. Shrili shared her blog about living with cancer during Thanksgiving 2011...

"Happy Fathers day...!" 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York and has worked in the
ophthalmology field of medicine  for over 30 years.
Today she talks about  Dads getting the short end of the stick on Father's Day

compared to Mothers on Mother's day...Enjoy

Happy Fathers Day

It’s time to  fire up those  grills, gather the family and get ready for that all important day to honor dad, Fathers Day.

We need to spend as much time celebrating our Dads’ special day as  we do for Mothers Day.

For some reason Dads’ get the short end of the stick on this holiday  and we need to recognize them for the value they bring to the table as well.  So this year forget the” shirt and tie” boring thing, be inventive, be creative and surprise DAD with a well thought out gift and not just the after- thought he usually gets.

Dads’ are special guys too and deserve the recognition; so make Sunday June 16th  all about  dad and celebrate!!
