"KEEPING A SHARP MIND IN RETIREMENT..." 'Marvin Gross' (Source)

Marvin Gross is a Financial consultant currently residing in Western N.Y.
Today Marvin shares  the Alzheimer's test....
enjoy!

KEEPING A SHARP MIND IN RETIREMENT

As we slowly move through retirement, we need to keep ourselves occupied with small projects.........

Like this guy.

I know, I saw it right away too.... No safety glasses or hearing protection.

And I caught something else that is really important:

he has no gloves on.

I might be up in age but I am still sharp as a tack.

"War Against Life on Earth..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesday)

Bettejo Dux has lived on the cosmic Garden Island of Kaua'i for over 40 years...
Bettejo  is the author of the famed novella, "The Scam."
Her new book "Children of Extinction" will be out soon!

War Against Life on Earth

Surely there is no one reading this who does not know and respect the danger of misuse of pesticides and herbicides. Buy a can of bug spray, Round Up, and read the directions. An obvious suggestion: do not spray up the nose.

“…from the origins, chemicals have been a form of warfare. It is a war against the soil, against our reserves of fresh water, and against all microbes and insects that are necessary for the growing of healthy foods.” 1998 The Economist.

It’s also been warfare against all life on earth.

The biotech giants today argue they are using a natural mutation. But introducing pesticides and herbicides artificially into plants is not, by any stretch of the imagination, anything nature has done since nature began.

The biotech corn, grown on Kauai, is not raised for human consumption. It’s raised to feed bovine-beef and dairy-for human consumption. These cows are ingesting pesticides and herbicides. You eat their produce and you’re ingesting pesticides and herbicides.

Worse-Darwin gets involved- some weeds and pests become immune to the old toxins requiring that more and stronger toxins are needed to keep the plants alive. The biotech industry does not want to reveal what these new toxins are. Or how often they must be used.

We, who breathe the air where these toxins are sprayed, breathe it in. We, who eat the beef and drink the milk products, ingest it.

Good or bad? You decide.

"The Fumigator..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen (Column)--May 11, 2014 blog 1286-rerun---

James “Kimo” Rosen is a retired professional photographer living in Kapa'a
with his best friend Obama Da Dog, Rosen also blogs as a hobby...

This blog was published in my bi-weekly column in the Kaua'i Garden
Island news on 06-02-14 titled, "The Fumigator, Terminator.?" Please click on
the link below and check recommend or better yet share on Facebook!
http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/guest/the-fumigator-terminator/article_9bf52c5e-ea19-11e3-b541-0019bb2963f4.html

No, the circus was not in town, they were fumigating and tenting the residences
in the senior and disabled housing complex behind Mahelona hospital..
We all hope all the gasses and chemicals dissipate...

The Fumigator

They waited for the reprieve. Many  felt like prisoners on death row about to be executed.  There was no phone call at midnight from the Governor, therefore the fumigation was to begin. This was not the movies, this was real life, no reprievel.

Approximately 32 elderly and or disabled people from the  55 and older senior housing project behind Mahelona hospital  were recently displaced so their homes could  be pumped full of poisonous gaseous fumes.

It looked like the circus was in town with bright  Red and yellowish-orange tents circumventing this senior housing project. This traveling show of tents was not very entertaining to say the least.

Some call it  terminating, others fumigation and most know it as pest control. It will keep all the pests out. No door to door salesman crooks or politicians  will even try and knock on your door with signs all over that say, "Danger, Peligro,Fumiogation, Sulfuryl Fluoride, (Vikane)."

My recommendation for a cheap security system is to  purchase or make these signs and plaster them all over your home. Even the most criminal of criminals with stay out.

A man representing the pest control people with reddish- orange complexion and dilated pupils told residents the chemicals have no ill effects. How re-assuring.

Arnold Schwarzenegger may have been the terminator in the movies, however  the real terminator is pest control. It takes hours to prepare your home.  You need to double bag every food item, medication and toiletries such as toothpaste and mouthwash with a special nylon coated  polymer film plastic bag.

There's no denying bugs, termites and  insects on Kaua'i. The question remains, is it really necessary to fill homes with toxic poisons. Plants, pets and humans cannot be present because they would die.

All plants and grass within four feet will most likely die. Just replacing plants is a huge expense, let alone replacing  many food items thrown out due to the  paranoia of the thought, "is  it really safe to eat  the bagged  food after returning home?"

Management required all  tenants, many with either mental or physical disabilities, to pack things up and live elsewhere for 5 days while they tent and fumigate all their homes.

Besides the stress of being driven out of their homes, it's the aftermath of possible ill effects that has many so very concerned. Many  believe  it's not right - or safe - to be forced to turn frail lives and fragile homes over to a poisonous chemical that will silently kill every living thing within four walls within hours---and then be expected to return home and pick up living as if nothing happened.  Many  worry about the long term  collateral damage and lingering ill effects that such heavily poisoned air might have on so many elderly and disabled folks.

There are alternatives to ridding buildings of termites and other pests that are not toxic to humans. Boric acid and water will kill termites and no need to vacate your home or bag your medications and all food in double lined nylon coated bags.

The stress alone from packing and unpacking and worrying if any of the poisons are still lingering around is enough to drive one insane.

Some considered this a stay-cation while others suffered. It's still to be determined if any collateral damage results.

The tenting and fumigation was beyond the authority of the awesome and caring  local management team which did everything possible to help all residents.

The residents appear tired and are walking around like zombies, however the termites are dead.
Hallelujah!

P.S.S.
A World record was  set at Kauai's  annual signature event, Taste of Hawaii on Sunday June 1, 2014.
Antonio Palomaras the general manager of the Kaua'i grill in Princeville sets a worlds record by sabering with saber knife 31 bottles

of Jean Louis by  Charles Defere champagne. The champagne is not cheap either at over $50.00 a bottle. After the record was set there was free champagne for all!

"West coast traffic..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

Judith Whitehead lives with her husband Steve in Amherst N.Y.
Judith has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for over 30 years...

West coast traffic

No one can dispute the beauty of the West coast with its tropical summer breezes and perfect weather...cool mornings, sunny afternoons and low humidity.

We always like to take a drive down to Malibu and try new eating establishments while we are here. The road to the ocean is a winding one through the caverns and mountains and usually takes only about 20 minutes to get to the other side.

It's all about what time you attempt to travel in this part of the country.  The early mornings are busy with traffic, early evening is usually better before people return to their homes.  We must have hit the wrong time to travel. We spent 20 minutes to get to our destination and almost 3 hours to return with 5 mph traffic crawling the whole way home.

The Los Angeles area has much beauty to offer, great weather and great food but oh the traffic.

I have little patience for this any longer, having lived out here many years ago we learned to tolerate it but  I was  also in my 20's at the time.  It is such a huge waste of time and life to sit in a car for that many hours to get to a location that is only 15 miles away.  That's why if I ever return to this area it will be for only a partial year.

Life is too short to spend it in lines of  traffic any longer.
Judith and Steve's Hotel, after a day in traffic they can relax...

Breeze and Buttons..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau (Source)

Dakinetalks favorite Uncle (Chester Lau)
"Unc"  is really passionate about creating a national Caregivers day.
Any help , support or ideas would be greatly appreciated...
'Unc' currently resides on the Hawai'ian Island of Oahu.
He is a retired cinematographer,
and  enjoys giving the politicians a bad time...

Breeze and Buttons

Hours after his birth, Breeze was found stumbling around by a farmer.  The newborn foal had been abandoned by his mother so the farmer took him to the Devon-based Mare and Foal Sanctuary where they cared for him. What happened next is  heartwarming.  One of the staff put a four-foot giant Teddy Bear called Buttons  into the stall with Breeze.

The foal was instantly attracted to him.  He had found a comforting replacement for his mother.  The two are inseparable. The caregivers  expect Breeze to be fine, thanks to the farmer who rescued him and to those who cared enough to take this little Cutie in.    Special thanks to Buttons.

P.S.

What do you think about this? A judge has sentenced a Kauai man to one year of probation and a $200 fine for making his son walk 1 mile home from school as a form of discipline;

"What Tampons are used for..." 'Obama Da Dog' (Source)

Obama Da Dog found  something on Facebook that made sense.
She wants to share this story with the world...

What Tampons are used for

Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.

The pharmacist at the counter asked the older boy, 'Son, how old are you?'

'Eight', the boy replied.

The man continued, 'Do you know what these are used for?'

The boy replied, 'Not exactly, but they aren't for me. They're for him. He's my brother. He's four."

"Oh, really?" the pharmacist replied with a grin.

"Yes." the boy said. "We saw on TV that if you use these, you would be able to swim, play tennis and ride a bike. Right now, he can't do none of those."

Cheeky rascals!

"FRIENDS..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesday)

Bettejo Dux has lived on the cosmic Garden Island of Kaua'i for over 40 years...
Bettejo  is the author of the famed novella, "The Scam."
Her new book "Children of Extinction" will be out soon!

FRIENDS

I am unhappy about  generalizations. You know the kind: most blondes are  dumb. To be really happy one must have a lot of  friends.

I think  about friends. I’m not a people collector. I think it may be a writer’s trait. A  brilliant writer friend, who I see seldom, says the same thing. He goes a step further, feeling he must have been adopted because his mother was such a gregarious person. I’m gregarious.  Sometimes. Sometimes not. I attribute that trait to being an only child.and moving around a lot. I attended six schools before graduating from High School.

I had a friend-at least one-in every school but did not usually carry her around with me when I moved. As a little girl, I had mostly girl friends. Boy friends? I always went steady. Didn’t shop around.  Liked one guy at a time until we broke up. I did carry one boy friends around for over sixty years. That’s because we always kept bumping  into each other in curious corners of the world. He and my husband and I graduated from the same school in Marine County. Met in Manila.  Then became neighbors on Oahu. Got to know his darling family. After my husband died and he divorced his wife, we attended our 40th high school reunion together. The only couple who had gone together in high school. He was born August 16, 1929. I was born August 15, 1930.

I took him as guest speaker to a Rotary Meeting in Poipu when he visited me on our shared 75th birth dates. When he got a year older, I sent him back.

A very successful, handsome man- Annapolis grad, Naval attaché in New Delhi, CO of Treasure Island, a Bohemian-he was a  swell guy. We fought a lot. About wars, politics and stuff. His first wife was darling.

He and his first wife recently died. I miss them.

I was never friendly with relatives. Attribute this to my vagabond life. I left the country when I was 19 and toddled about on adventures in exotic ports-La Ceiba. Quito. Zamboanga, Appari, Guayaquil.  Became acquainted with  a beautiful cousin who lives on the mainland. She visited me here. I  wish we’d met earlier. She’s some  twenty years younger than I. Her father and my father were brothers.  She attended Stanford on scholarship.

When I came back to America-to Hawaii-I was thrust into a very strange  world. Suburbia USA. Then Kauai, a third world feudal state, in both of which venues I  did not belong.  I’ve been, in my life, the one everybody loved to love and the one everybody loved to hate.  Don’t know which role I loved the best.

At the moment I have one very  dear friend. He’s an editor, publisher, photographer, blogger, columnist and great guy. He loves dogs. He and his dog, Obama, have visited my jungle house. They understand my eccentricity and both, I think, are  inclined to be loners, too Know why I like him? Because he makes me feel ageless.
