The miracle of cataract surgery

What do you call a deer with no eyes? No eye deer.

It was just a simple visit to the optometrist for my 2-year check for new glasses.

My eyes had been getting progressively worse the last two years.  I figured a new prescription

would be all that was needed. The eye doctor tested and retested my eyes and said he could not find a prescription that would give me 20/20 HD vision like years past. The strange thing he could not find any obvious cataracts, macular degeneration, plus my glaucoma was healed last year with laser surgery and my annual diabetic retina exam proved negative.

He suggested I consult with their in-house Ophthalmologist/eye surgeon. I made the appointment with the surgeon and all looked fine at first, however, I kept harping on poor night vision, and that I can’t read the menu on

my cable tv screen even with my glasses on.  After a thorough exam and findings that the sophisticated machines couldn’t find, he declares "no wonder your vision is blurred, your lens is all fogged."  "You have a posterior subcapsular cataract which is prominent among diabetics." This was good news and bad news, since if a cataract wasn't detected, I was on my way for a brain scan.

What is a cataract? No, it's not a luxury vehicle.
It's a medical condition in which the lens of the eye becomes progressively opaque,

resulting in blurred vision.  If you have blurred, fogged vision, or trouble driving at night with glaring headlights these are the first signs of cataracts.
Most cataracts develop when aging or injury changes the tissue that makes up your eye's lens. Cataracts can also be caused by other eye conditions, past eye surgery, or medical conditions such as diabetes.

Deciding on cataract surgery was a no-brainer since untreated cataracts can lead to loss of vision and the fact of being a retired professional photographer of 40 years
Ironically, prior to my surgery

lot of Wilcox hospital.

that still dabbles in digital photography on a daily basis photographing sunrises with my iPhone along with my best friend, my dog at my side,  weighed very heavy on me.

There are few steps prior to cataract surgery.
A few weeks before surgery you must get fitted and sized for the new lens that will be transplanted in your eye, my surgeon has a high qualified technician do this. This job is crucial! A COVID test is also required three days prior

to any surgical procedure even if you've been vaccinated. Two different antibiotic eyedrops must start being administered three days prior to surgery along with a daily hairline and face cleansing with 'Hibiclens.'

 The same-day surgical

staff at Wilcox medical center calmed my nerves before, during, and post-surgery. Efficiency is their game, checks, balances, and asking many times my name, birthday, and what you’re there for.

The operating surgeon felt I was the anxious type; therefore, he had the nurse administer Valium before the surgery. Who me anxious?  Along with a short dose of propofol (the same drug Michael Jackson overdosed on) from the anesthesiologist.

For some reason even though the surgery is on your eye, they have you strip down to your

birthday suit and wear one of those signature hospital gowns that notoriously expose the moonrise. They played classical music to relax me during the surgery. The propofol knocks you out to numb the eye, however, you are woken up and relaxed during the surgery since the eye must be open.

"Are you going to write about us too?" Those were the words a team of nurses said in unison after my recent cataract surgery in the post-op recovery room.  Although I was coming out of heavy sedation, those are complimentary

words for any writer. You see I penned a wellness guest column for the Garden Island news about my recent colonoscopy last August, titled, “ The dreaded Roto-Rooter, the coming of age." https://dakinetalk.blogspot.com/2020/08/the-dreaded-roto-rooter-coming-of-age.html
I wasn't planning on writing about my cataract surgery, however, when a team of nurses seemed like they enjoyed my last wellness article, why not give cataract surgery a touch of the keyboard especially now that I can see so much better!

The hardest part of cataract surgery is not being able to bend from the waist down for the first week since it puts undue pressure on your eyes.  It took me two days to figure out how to pick up my dog's business by getting down on one knee and hoisting myself up on my walking stick with a poop bag

on the other hand. You cannot lift anything over 10 lbs. Sneezing must be silenced and bowel movements must not be rushed or squeezed. I could not ride my bike or go swimming either. Even the simple exercise of hanging from a tree branch as natural traction for my spinal stenosis is prohibited during recuperation. Those who have marital relations, need to cease or be very passive. It's amazing the common things we do that put pressure on the eyes.

You must wear polarized wrap around dark sunglasses when outdoors and when sleeping

you must wear a plastic shield over the affected eye and either sleep on your back or the opposite side than you were operated on

Should you have cataracts and decide on surgery make sure you're comfortable with the surgeon.

Anyone who can microscopically tear out a cataract, remove the God-given lens of your eye and replace it with a man-made lens and restore your vision to almost 20/20, and save you from potentially going blind is a genius.

Cataract surgery is said to have a 99.7% success rate and is considered one of the safest modern-day miracle surgical procedures.

Finally, I asked my eye surgeon how he was so smart? He said he was a good pupil!

Cancel culture, the woke police, and now Kauai's Chief of police

Cancel culture has now canceled six Dr. Seuss books because someone somewhere was offended.

Mr. Potato head was canceled because of gender identity and a group of people was offended. Elmer Fudd, Pepe Lepeu, Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, and so many American institutions are being canceled. The irony while all this is being done in the name of our keiki, today's music and entertainment industries are filled with obscenities and references to rape, murder, drugs, and fornication- and yet nothing has been canceled.

Some are talking of canceling our forefathers of this great country, George Washington,

Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and other historic leaders. Prayer has been canceled in our public schools, yet is allowed in our prisons.  Even our national anthem has been canceled at many sporting events. Many are in favor of canceling 'God' out of the "Pledge of Allegiance."

Why hasn't the "woke police" canceled Hollywood and the entertainment industry

which is filled with pornography, foul language, and violence, or canceled the killing of babies, (abortions) yet cartoon characters and children's books are being canceled.  What's next, your bible?

Cancel culture, the 'woke police', and now Kauai's own Chief of police for telling an ethnic joke.

I never personally met Chief Todd Raybuck, however every time I pass his squad car or see him riding his bike on the multi-use trail with his family he waves or gives a friendly head nod. He seems very approachable.

People on Kauai tell ethnic jokes, it's part of the culture, comedian Frank Delima makes a living out of ethnic jokes. The Podagee(sic)joke is part of Hawaii culture, even told by many Portuguese people
My friend Dickie Chang with the Chief

themselves in a self-deprecating manner. How many times do white people hear the haole derogative/ explicative as a joke here in Hawaii? There was a time we could laugh at the stereotypes of others as well as laugh at ourselves.  This whole PC thing makes people take things way too seriously.

The Chief told an ethnic joke, to be precise a Japanese joke, he publicly apologized
All images of the Chief were
taken off his public profile on Facebook
where all images were sharable.

in a sincere manner. Is this reason for a man who appears to be overwhelmingly popular and liked by the community at large and outstanding at his job to resign or be fired?

Chief Raybuck from my observations is good for the island, to cancel him, would be 100 steps backward and only show we are following in the footsteps
A public Tweet from the Chief from April 8, 2020
of the mainland cancel culture that is helping to destroy our great country. Nobody on these islands likes to believe we are following the mainland, we believe we stand alone, let's take a  positive stand for the Chief!

Cancel culture is scary because one day you are the one canceling and the next day you are the cancelee.(sic)

Say the wrong thing to a group of people, on Facebook or any social media platform,

not only current or from the past and it can haunt you forever. Even if you said something in jest, as a joke 10 years ago when the times were different, some enemy of yours can bring it up in the present and ruin your life, especially in those interim years if you've become successful, famous, or even infamous.

Social media and comment sections of periodicals have become the downfall of society.

The commenters are mostly trolls of the likes of chimpanzees throwing feces at one another. The commenters as the chimpanzees are experiencing stresses and agitations, which can cause them to react in fanatical ways with unkind and damaging words.

Chief Raybuck deserves a second chance. Please do not let cancel culture, the 'woke police' and stressed-out commenters get the best of our community, we are better than this.

    There is a meme

circulating social media that says it all. There is a photo of the cleaning solution, "Spic and Span," it says, I feel a name change coming.
If God can forgive us, we can forgive the Chief. 'Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." John8:7

Trump, the limelight, PT Barnum, and the rest of the story

Donald Trump is always 10 chess moves ahead of everyone.  Now he’s just smiling and thinking how he can make America great again in 2024.
The old adage by P. T. Barnum about there being no such thing as bad publicity has undergone its most trying test yet with the second impeachment trial of former President Trump being acquitted of all charges as he was in the first impeachment trial.

If the Dems really wanted to do damage, as basic psychology suggests, would be to forget Trump altogether and never mention his name again.

Instead, they keep him in the media limelight.  Good or bad, publicity is beneficial, Trump knows this, milks it, and realizes beyond a reasonable doubt all this will help in the long hull.

It's ironic that the Democrats still yearn for Donald Trump. He is still the topic of late-night talk shows

and comedy. The network news still reports on him more than any other ex-president.

Love him, hate him, or even love to hate him Donald Trump is the most mesmerizing
and charismatic person to ever hold political office and people feel a need to know what's happening with him, good-bad, comical, or displeasing.

Steven Colbert a late-night talk show host was said to be happy when Joe Biden "won" the election, however, his comedy and talk show is still focused around Trump, talk about being obsessed and having a chronic case of TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome,) even while he's out of office.

Colbert is not the only left-wing

democrat still utterly obsessed with Trump even though he's no longer President. CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and every major network on the airwaves is Jonesing for anything "Donald".

There's is a reason the Democrats don't want him to run in 2024, because they know he

will win, especially with all the attention he's currently getting on a daily basis right now. This is exactly what the lamestream media did prior to the 2016 election and wondered how Trump was elected.

Note to my Democrat friends;
Should you truly want Donald Trump to never hold office again and disappear,  you must

do what any psychiatrist would advise you to do, quit talking about him and making him the center of attention.  I know this won't happen. Therefore, I would like to thank my far left and democrat friends for keeping Donald Trump's name current and relevant.

 PT Barnum also said,

“I don't care what the newspapers say about me as long as they spell my name right.” "And now you know — the rest of the story."-Paul Harvey
