Discipline, then and now

I would like to politely disagree on  the Kauai Garden Island newspaper's  recent opinion article  "A grown man should know better."
http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/editorial/a-grown-man-should-know-better/article_873e00ba-4dec-11e4-9c57-eb88e5b91dc3.html

A 51-year-old adult male allegedly walked onto a school bus at a bus stop in Anahola and threatened to punch a juvenile male if he bothered his child again. The man  was arrested for making a second-degree terroristic threat. An investigation continues.  Mahalo tgi for having  the respect to not mention this man's name.

The articles main point is there are other ways to deal with such situations? Yes there are other ways, however when I was a kid this method would had been acceptable and would had scared the morning breakfast out of the bully.

In the mean time the father of the boy being bullied is arrested and the bully is further encouraged by knowing if he continues to bully and this happens again somebodies parent could again be arrested.

Parents can no longer spank their kids in horror of their offspring reporting it to the department  human services. A father can no longer protect his child with good old punishment that would most probably work.

This reminds me of the case not to long ago where a man was arrested for making his son walk home form school as a punishment.

When I was a kid when I was threatened I straightened right up. Nobody ever followed through, just a scare tactic. "Just wait till your father get's home," was a threat my mother and mothers of that generation use that worked.
"OK, sorry mom, please don't tell dad, please."

We are raising a nations of wimps that as adults will not have a clue.

Most parents of my generation would be sitting in jail for disciplining their children.

Let's face it, time out's and talking about it doesn't work for all.
Spare the rod and spoil the child.
My parents back then. Nowadays parents cannot
discipline their childrenwithout the fear of going to jail...

Nothing beats a good spanking. Negative reinforcement works & beats a time out for appropriate offenses.

Jimbo, I guess that last public spanking you received from the child editors at TGI / OPI didn't "crack da back." But strengthen your resolve. Amazing who those anonymous bullies (we know who they are) used they're media power to inflict more pain than a switch. And never a public apology....Where are the media police? Better yet who was that bus driver that turned his head? Where is his public spanking TGI / OPI?

Hmmm. Not sure beating the crap out of a child is the way to go

Man, when i was a kid, I remember teachers pulling my ear and pinching me hard on the neck, it worked pretty well... Those teachers would be arrested in this day...

KimoRosen said...

Ron, not beating the crap out of no-one but a little threat can go a long way in scaring a kid... My guess is the man was only making a threat?

Ron (Martini) Ostroff said...

The problem is two fold. A threat that then is not carried out not only diminishes the person that issued the threat but reinforces the behavior that is unacceptable. "
a statement of an intention to inflict pain, injury, damage, or other hostile action on someone in retribution for something done or not done.

Spare the rod and spoil the child probably was an act of desperation when one had 10 children running around.

A juvenile kid is not going to react to let's talk about it, or let's take time out and take deep breaths. Just like every kid getting a trophy , even the worst kid on the team, we are definitely raising a nation of clueless youth.

If it weren't for the fact that there are parents who do abuse their children, this may never have come to the point it has. As I mentioned before, I'm more grateful that we have an agency that looks after the welfare of children than not having one at all, but, it's still very unclear what is acceptable these days. And, also, what is acceptable when a parent (or adult) is suspected of something. Should this man have been arrested? Not in my opinion (if I understand the story clearly).

If the man actually followed through and caused bodily harm, totally another story... Whom amongst us hasn't made threats out of anger and frustration?

Can use this as campaign poster for Mayor of Kauai

KimoRosen said...

Unc, If healthy in 2018 I may run for Mayor. Did not run this time since the incumbent is a friend and excellent mayor. Carvalho cannot run 2018 because of term limits.

Teaching respect, manners starts from baby on up, problem today is parents for whatever reasons are too concerned about everything other then spending time, teaching their children. This falls on the teacher's lap, they can't manage this, it's too overwhelming.Another pearl of wisdom spiritual teaching reinforces how to act civil, how to be kind. May be that Dad on the bus was taking a cue from Madea, lol. If a child tells their parent that someone is picking on them, the natural reaction would be to protect them, this isn't the 50-60's anymore times sure have changed, sigh

n Thailand, the ruler and switch are carried by many Thai teachers. The male teachers tend to carry a switch that is taped. Few use the ruler or switch--just a reminder I suppose. That said, when poorly behaved, the ruler or switch come out without hesitation. Most Thai children, in monastery schools, are some of the most well behaved students I have ever taught. They do not even enter the classroom when class is in session, until given permission by the teacher. When I began teaching at the University, and some of the "spoiled new money students" began to be rude in class, I just picked up the ruler and tap, tap, tapped it on the desk. That took care of any behavior problems. Pavlov's bell.

Fantastic Deb..the real Bad ones, eject them from class & send home to parents,if parents cannot control their own kids, parents should be disciplined too .
