"Fundamentalists are the problem..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesday)

Bettejo Dux has lived on the cosmic Garden Island of Kaua'i for over 40 years...
Bettejo is the author of the famed novellas "The Scam."
and recently published  "Children of Extinction..."
Both books available on www.amazon.com

Fundamentalists are the problem

I think the problem lies with the fundamentalists in either of the three major religions: Christian, Muslim, Jews.

I think it’s rather condescending of many  to say “We should love Muslims. Most of them really are nice people.”

As a devout nonbeliever I could respond, “Most Christians are really nice people.” “Most Jews are really nice people.” “Most Muslims are really nice people.”

However, every fundamentalist I’ve ever come into contact with was hateful.

I think you have a duty to your Gods to “clean your own house” before you start indulging in ad hominem. Remember, we are in the Middle East, their house, murdering innocent  men, women and children. As a devout nonbeliever I do not find this very loving.

Bettejo, as a devout believer in G-d, i believe there are many roads to having a spiritual relationship with the creator. My father always told me; "there is more than one road to Rome. Religion works if you believe it works, and I believe it works. All religions work, they bring fellowship and overall make people better and more caring citizen. Atheists too can have fellowship and common ground and do good things. Everything is relative. on another note, the Placebo effect works. If religion makes a person feel good, that's beautiful! Amen!

"I think it is funny when people say "Religious War" because most of the time it is just a WAR for power, land or greed( or all the above) hidden in the guise of religious difference. Leaders like Hitler need to use things like: ideals of religion or national identity to indoctrinate people into following them. With groups like ISIS, I see similarities to cults. Cult leaders prey on the weakness of some to blindly control them. And ISIS preys on the anger and disillusionment of young people to use them to commit act of violence! This is NOT about religion. No God is behind this. Human beings are!"

I really like Bettejoe!

It's not easy to even openly admit to being a non-believer. When I reveal that I'm an atheist and non-spiritual, people seem to have an image in their mind that I am a sad, bitter and lost person, which is the furthest from the truth. It wasn't until I let go of all supernatural beliefs that I started to find genuine happiness in my own life.

But, everyone is different. I recognize and respect that some people enjoy & even require having some form of religious/spiritual faith for one reason or another. As long as they are happy & not trying to impose their beliefs on others or use it as an excuse for poor behaviour, then we should get along just fine.

Fundamental extremists, on the other hand, do generally tend to be strangely angry & hateful (and on the extreme end: violent killers). I prefer not to discuss the Mideast because it's far too complex, so I'll just end by pointing out that religion has that unique & frightening property that it can drive otherwise good people do very, VERY bad things. This is why fundamentalists terrify me.

Thank you, Jaana. I disagree about commuting on the MidEast. I think the issue MUST be addressed.

x Janna. don't let them 'terrify' you. My father, who I loved drearily, taught me, "Everybody is afraid. It's how you handle fear that matters. I face it. In the religious real I force them to respond-these are obviously Christian fundamentalists-and they sound, scary, stupid and insane.

Jaana Makipaa said...

Bettejo, it must be addressed for sure, but I'm just not the right person to -because I can't even keep track of what's been going on over there (historically & currently). It's all very confusing to me.

As for my use of the word "terrified," it would depend on the extremist of course. I would certainly be terrified if I were in the Mideast (both as a woman and as an atheist). As for USA, there are groups such as the Westbro Baptist Church who would frighten me, as they are so insane & hateful, I am afraid of what they might be capable of doing. Maybe not fearing my own safety, but I certainly do fear for the safety of those children. And, of course we hear stories of priests molesting children all the time, and mothers who kill their children because "God commanded it" or because their child was homosexual.
