everything you did was recorded on a body cam and could be used against you in a court of law? Your every move is under a microscope. This is what our men and woman in blue have to deal with on a 24-hour basis, 7 days a week.
A teenage girl who was about to stab and possibly kill another girl was apprehended and shot by a police officer who potentially saved the life of the person about to be stabbed. In years past this officer would be deemed a hero,
and for good reason. Today's 'woke society and cancel culture' has him labeled as a murderer and wants him to stand trial for murder and doing his job. The mainstream media spins the story as the officer is at fault. The officer was doing his job, trying to save a life, possibly multiple lives, yet the police are made out to be the bad guys. Criminals are now the victims, and the good guys are now the criminals. Welcome to "Woke America!"

The majority of these police shootings are not happening to model citizens but usually
occurring to those committing crimes, about to commit crimes and those with criminal and or suspicious pasts and disruptive demeanors. This is not just happening in the national media. Honolulu now has 3 officers being charged for murder for apprehending a criminal even though he allegedly rammed a stolen vehicle into their patrol car.

Who would want to be a cop
these days? The liberals would want you to believe in the middle of a bank robbery or holdup the cops should stop and say, "look dude, I know you had a hard life, let’s just talk about this and sing Kumbaya."

Locally on Kauai,
our excellent award-winning Kauai bus service now has cameras watching our every move. There is one camera watching the driver, everyone entering the bus, another camera watching everyone on the bus, and a backup camera for the drivers' convenience.

Supermarkets, banks, many retailers, and the famous Las Vegas casinos have the eye in the sky watching the cashiers and the customers coming and going. Traffic cams are many...
Now imagine having body cams
at your workplace? Would you go to work if you had to wear a body cam and have your every move recorded for possible review and litigation? Imagine if the law required this?

Have our freedoms
been compromised with security cams? Should our every move be recorded for future reference?

Many law enforcement
officers are afraid to do their jobs and are taking early retirement. I can't blame them when we live in a society that is looking hard to cancel our every move.

Now let’s take it one step further, imagine every human being required at birth to be microchipped with a body cam to record their whole life?
This was somewhat
predicted in George Orwell’s "1984" and there is a reality show called "Big Brother" where over 80 cameras are recording every house guest's move for 3 months as they pick each other off. There have also been many movies about this subject.

There are even some who believe the COVID vaccine is implanting a government tracking device in us now?
Next time you see a cop, give them a friendly wave or head nod and thank them for their
service! Better yet pick up their meal tab the next time you see an officer at the local fast-food establishment, restaurant, or doughnut shop. Let them know you appreciate them since so many Americans want to defund the police and make them the criminals while making the true criminals the heroes.

This all explains why
they call it the criminal law system because our laws were made for the criminals, not for the outstanding members of society.

The day will come when we need the help of the police and must call 911, I pray, they will still be there to help and assist.

It's gotten to the point where the police can barely defend themselves anymore. I don't blame them for taking early retirement. No wonder they're having hard times finding new recruits.
Again, brilliantly written, and gutsy!
Thank you.

My father was on the police force well before I was born and he told us of corrupt cops that took every advantage they could. Yes there are a handful of bad cops out there just as there are bad politicians, service workers, and the like but out good, upstanding men and women in blue can use those cameras to defend themselves as well as being condemned by them. We just need to look at the facts of the footage and not make a predetermined answer which may be wrong. I salute the good, hard working cops out there and would love to see the bad ones ferreted out and dismissed. As a civilian and as much as I can, I have your backs.
Unknown, It is true, there are good and bad in all professions, religions, and colors...
I still don't like the fact that our lives are being recorded... I would not want to wear a body cam!

Great article! Thank you! I’m so happy for all of the exonerated officers after criminals are exposed due to chest cams. They are the heroes of our society who separate good law abiding citizens from the criminals. Hold the line! 👮🏾♂️👮🏽👮🏼♀️ Back the blue!

Cops wouldn't have to worry about "being made out to be the bad guy" if cops did what they're supposed to. Unfortunately, even with everything going on and body cameras, some cops still don't get it.

As an attorney and crime victim advocate, the best cops I worked with were glad to have the cam. We're beyond the time when they could be excused for forgetting to turn it on and are right to question that practice. One of the most common things people say is "If you're not doing something wrong, you shouldn't worry about [whatever]". That applies to officers, too. Cams do create a sticky ethical question when they are used to record minors and the mentally impaired, but that is often when they're most needed.

I’m impressed. It took 4 whole paragraphs for me to recognize this as another Mr. Rosen diatribe. 😂😅

Every street light on Hawaii has a camera in it. Obscene amounts of TAX payers money was spent to replace all the lights with these "smart SURVEILLANCE " led lights several years ago. https://www.bloomberg.com/.../led-streetlights-raise-new...

We can thank the Democrats for the climate Law Enforcement has to deal with because they are in bed with terrorist organizations like BLM and ANTIFA. The constant calling for defunding the police is taking its toll on the officers who are trying to do their jobs. When criminals like Michael Brown and George Floyd are raised up as heros and the police are vilified, it’s the communities who will suffer because good police officers will walk off the job or take early retirement. Watch and see how crime will rise because of what is going on.

Shhh Rosen.
You can’t be a Supporter of 1/6, and then try to Act like you support the Police. Slither away

I agree 100% with this article, being a Police Officer is an extremely demanding and difficult profession but a very rewarding one as well. People that criticize Law Enforcement, should sign up for “Ride Along” to actually see for themselves what occurs on a daily basis. As a retired Cop I know It’s very stressful not knowing what will happen when getting to a reported Domestic Disturbance on Christmas morning or an Assault in progress on New Years eve…. sign up for that ride along to see what “Your” KPD Officers are doing out there to Serve and Protect you and yours while you sleep.

“Imagine having a job where everything you did was recorded on a body cam and could be used against you in a court of law.”
Why even read the rest of your screed when you lead with insipidities like this. Most citizens aren’t entrusted with the mandate of ‘protect and serve’, that’s why they don’t walk around with body cams. As usual, blinkered ideology leads the way for Rosen.

My son is in law enforcement. Five years ago he took down a fleeing criminal who was in the act of shooting at another officer. Back then this was an “open and shut case.” I’m not so sure that it would true today.

I never had a job where I carried a gun. The cameras on the busses are there to protect the driver. If we didn’t have cameras George Floyd would have just been another incident.
I agree, the police should be respected and most have earned that respect but a few bad apples means very bad things for the citizens those bad apples are sworn to protect.

A jury trial is the backbone of our democracy. 12 average citizens pass judgement on police, multi-national corporations, politicians, judges and all others of any background, no matter how rich and powerful. It is the best system in the world. I trust the jury trial and those citizens who perform one of the most important roles in our democracy. So should you. Police are not above the law. If the evidence shows and a jury determines that they broke the law, they should face consequences just like anyone else. Look at the George Floyd case. Did the jury do the right thing? I think so. Have some faith in our judicial system.

Kimo,
If it’s a life and death situation as you mentioned above, “girl about to stab another girl.” Yeah for sure the police officer was doing the right thing.
However, they(Police Officer) should not have shot when there was no evidence or visual of a weapon to cause harmful bodily harm or death.
If you had a gun and pointed to a person running away from you. Would you shoot the person? I hope not!
Police are human — good, not so good and bad
I’m responding to Kimo’s Other Voices of July 14 (Forum, “On body cameras and ‘criminal law’”). To start with, I’ll write a piece of his. “A teenage girl who was about to stab and possibly kill another girl was apprehended and shot by a police officer who potentially saved the life of the person about to be stabbed.”
If a police officer has apprehended a suspect and then shoots and kills the person, there’s a possibility that the officer committed a crime. Police are human, and that means that there are good ones, not so good ones and bad ones. They have rules to follow, and if they don’t, then negative consequences will follow.
You’re correct that much of the time these suspects aren’t the best people, and the Honolulu case would certainly have the arrow pointing in that direction. However, the suspect’s car was stopped and the officers shot from behind, killing him with multiple back-of-the-head shots. It does paint a picture of a possible criminal act.
Now onto body cams, cameras and at-birth micro-chipping. The police wear body cams, but for it to work it has to be turned on. Sometimes it isn’t, and I wonder why? It’s one profession that warrants the wearing of and of its correct use.
Eye-in-the-sky camera surveillance does feel somewhat overreaching, and there needs to be specific laws in what information is picked up and how it’s used.
At-birth micro-chipping, NO.
Oh, I just remembered the police-defunding comment. When that came out I knew it was the wrong way to label police reforms or the restructuring of police departments.
I knew the term was going to be weaponized, creating a huge propaganda machine of going soft on crime. Police still act against crime. Maybe they aren’t the front line for mental-health issues, or parking tickets or routine traffic stops. Maybe there’s better training and better vetting of raciest thinking and beliefs.
All right, I’m done. I’ve said this in the past, and I’ll say it again: The way you write and speak fits your agenda of misinformation, and you cherry-pick instead of presenting the whole picture. Maybe you call this “Other Voices.” I don’t.
