Law enforcement need to set an example...

When I am out and about I have a great vantage point from a high bicycle seat to see drivers gabbing on cell phones. My own personal survey when I counted one day had approximately 1 out of 4 drivers yakking on their blueberries, blackberries and array of other electronic devices.

Parents may tell their children to not smoke or do drugs, however if the parents themselves are doing these things, it's hard for the children to take them serious. In the same respect one of the biggest perpetrators of the law is law enforcement themselves.. I pass many police cars and continually see the officers of the law talking on their cell phones when driving.

We don't have law enforcement smoking pot or snorting coke and then arresting citizens for that same violation, however in contrast we do have officers writing citations for cell phone usage when the officers themselves do not adhere to the same rules.

They say, "monkey see, monkey do," one way to curb cell phone usage while driving is for the men and woman in blue to be examples and practice what they preach. For the law to work it must be adhered to by everyone.

   Hey, you talkin to me? Yea, I'm talkin to you!

Just too many choices these days...

It's no longer a simple chore shopping for toothpaste, every brand from Crest down to Ultrabrite has at least ten choices to choose from. All I wanted was a tube of Crest Toothpaste, There was "Pro-health clinically proven," Pro-health Gum protection," Whitening plus Scope," Whitening expressions,"Extra White plus outlast," Crest Sensitivity," Crest Cavity protection," "Crest Fairies protection,"  for kids?" (At least I think it's kids toothpaste?) Plus another 15 varieties on their website.

I was going to go on and mention the many different kinds and fragrances of Deodorants, Antiperspirants, Shampoos, Conditions, Gel, Hairsprays, Dish-soaps, etc. The choices are overwhelming, every product starts with an original and grows from there...and not enough space to list them all...

I'll still take original flavored potato chips over the numerous flavors from Pizza, to sour cream and onion to salt and vinegar, and so many flavor's, it's mind boggling.

I'll still take vanilla ice cream over the multiple of flavors in your grocers freezers. I'll still take original Ritz crackers over the 10 new varieties  available ,last but not least I'll still chose the Kaua'i Garden Island News over the multiple blogs, web-casts , newscasts  and the coconut wireless.  Simple is best and bigger is not always better, but one thing is for cetain with all the choices available how can anyone ever make up their mind?

'How to Survive working with women in the workplace..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspirational Mondays)

Judith Roesch is one of the many woman in the workplace, she is also known as 'Ms. Aloha.'  giving free samples of Kaua'i coffee to local Walmart customers in Lihu'e Kaua'i Hawai'i...

I work closely in a medical office with over 20 woman; they consist of ages ranging from 24 yrs old to 60 years old. This wide range of personalities makes for a most interesting mix through out the day. Hormone levels can range from the very sensitive to the mundane. One never knows what the day will bring.

People work for all kinds of reasons; the biggest reason being for money to sustain themselves. Some work to keep busy and some for the satisfaction. Some people choose to bring their home life to work and share it with others for commiseration. Some choose to escape their home life, and loose themselves in the work day.

Women working together must develop a special “dance” in order to get along with each other and they

must delicately approach each other in order not to cause hard feelings when broaching different hot topics of discussion. I have been in the working world since I was 17 years old and have slowly devised these simple rules that make it easier to survive the workplace when working with women.

1. Stay a neutral person; office gossip will always move through a group of women at warp speed. When someone tries to entice you to take sides, stay neutral.

2. When your boss comes in and seems troubled, do not ask “what’s wrong”? Whatever you say can be the wrong thing and it is better to avoid them until they work it off.

3. Don’t bring your home problems to work; it makes other people feel uncomfortable and brings their day down as well.

4. Don’t socialize with the people you work with, this can backfire on you during office hours and you may have said something you could regret later on.

 Last but not least, don’t stay in a job that you don’t feel fulfilled in; look for another

One. Don’t look back with regret; we all know life is very short.

President Obama ,WHY ARE WE STILL IN IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN ? A leader should LEAD !!! How about get IN FRONT OF THE TROOPS IN IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN WITH GEORGE W.BUSH !!!Politicians who created wars Never Serviced in the Military!!! I was drafted right out of high school in 1946  as Army Signal Corps Official Motion picture photographer in occupied Germany because I had experience as a Newsreel photographer while in high school.my first assignment in Europe was to document the Grave Registration teams picking war deaths in old battle fields & how they process & send the remains home.Recalled to duty in the Korean war so now you know why I was anti-wars.Some wars are necessary,but the Iraq & Afghan wars are NOT !!!we need to make the war mongers accountable,our present economic problems are result of them. so you better start learning Chinese or French,because the marquis de LaFayette won't be here to help us again !!!


Now we should Prosecute the War Mongers who created these unnecessary wars for financial profits , mind control & Bankrupt our financial & Human resources !!! What have we gained after these years of endless wars? starting with GW Bush & gang, forfeit their government pensions &  war profits for our wounded or deceased military families. No Gitmo for them,deploy them to Baghdad & Afghanistan forever  for night infantry patrol or pick up week old battle remains !!!

Where there’s a will there’s a way

Mark Beeksma’s Aug. 11 letter to the editor titled, “Small business and liberty,” http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/article_54e79714-c3ea-11e0-aad2-001cc4c002e0.html

basically talks about becoming more independent from government with the likes of installing solar panels, growing your own food and becoming a small business owner.  

Mark states, “buy an electric car and purchase photovoltaic cells for your roof or garage. From now on, you can get your fuel free from the sun. The big oil companies have one less customer. The big government doesn’t get to tax your gasoline purchases or tax the high income that you need to earn in order to afford to buy gasoline.”

In theory Mark is correct and in a perfect world that would be true, however, in government if something can be taxed it will be taxed. Many things that were once free now have taxes and fees attached to them. Look no further than our neighbor island of O‘ahu, where parking your car can cost $200 to $600 a month, and to go hiking on many nature trails they now charge a fee.

Maybe big government won’t get to tax our gasoline since we are using electric cars, but somehow, someway, some politician somewhere will introduce a bill to tax the sun, the rain and even the air we breath.

James "kimo" Rosen is back blogging about his favorite topic, "Discounts!"

Why do Kids and Seniors get discounts?

Many times you will see signs at restaurants, "Kids eat free!" If I owned a restaurant I would charged kids 50% more since they are such hard maintenance. They make messes at the table and in the restrooms and many times running around the restaurants disturbing others. The servers have to try and have patience with the kids or the parents get mad. Kids are really some of the highest maintenance and to give them a discount is ridiculous, the most ridiculous discount is that if your child can sit on your lap, they fly free, just don't be the person sitting next to the mom with twins, it will be one long flight.

Seniors after a lifetime of saving money and no longer driving seem to warrant diascounts on everything from early bird specials to movies, theatre and public transportation. Seniors are the ones who have enough money to do those things since they do not blow their money on partying.

It's time that discounts be given to the general hard working person who struggles paycheck to paycheck...


Next time you decide to go out maybe the Seniors can babysit the kids for free while the rest of us get some much needed attention. Wouldn't you love to see the sign, working class hero discount, Kids and seniors 50% more.

What's my Fortune, cookie?

Whether or not you put any degree of belief in them, fortune cookies are fun.

Back when I was a kid they were less sophisticated. More spelling mistakes. More inscrutable. Like "While you are reading this . . . ." What? Is someone sneaking up behind me with a knife? What did the left out part of my fortune say?

When I was really young I couldn't figure out how they got these things printed, or how they managed to fit them into the fortune cookie. I pictured some guy, dressed like our Chinese waiter, pecking away at a very tiny typewriter that held these miniature slips of paper. And then I pictured him sliding the newly-typed fortune in through one end of the cookie. Tough job.

I don't like eating fortune cookies. They seem rather bland to me. But I love reading the fortunes. If there's a group of us eating at a Chinese restaurant and the waiter brings a plate of fortune cookies, I open any of the extra ones (or the ones others choose not to take). When I bring home takeout there are usually a couple of extra fortune cookies in the bag. I save those and open one of them each morning for the next couple of days. It's an interesting way to start the day, sometimes.

My wife and I used to host New Year's Eve parties. I always went out and bought a batch of 'naughty' fortune cookies. You know, the kind that says things like "Man who go around with hand in pocket always feel a little cocky". They're much funnier when it's almost midnight and you've had several drinks.

• A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.

I tape favorite fortune cookie messages to the front of my computer monitor. These are some of my favorites:

• Nothing can keep you from reaching your goals. Do it!
• You will obtain your goal if you maintain your course.
• You have a charming way with words and should write a book.

(got that one twice over the course of several months)

And my absolutely most favorite (for now):

• We must always have old memories and young hopes.

"Drugged Driving..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

Prescription Drugs are as much a danger as Alcohol on the roads.

One of the most overlooked reasons for  driving accidents is not drunk driving ,texting or cell phone driving but rather new studies have shown that drugged driving is a danger to us all.

This is not illegal drugs but rather the prescription drugs that almost every adult over 55 is on one or more of these, even over the counter drugs  can effect our abilities to react in a timely manner especially the cold medications such as  NyQuil.

Diabetic drugs can effect our blood sugar glucose levels, effecting our concentration, high blood pressure medications can make us drowsy, pain killers can make us feel euphoric almost like an illegal drug and antidepressants can make us feel mellow like we have weights on our arms and legs, Just because you follow your doctors orders does not mean that your medications are safe to take while driving a motor vehicle.

  Many cities are now training  their law enforcement to recognize the behavior of people on prescribed drugs, in fact if you run a red light or are caught speeding in many cities under the influence of prescribed medications you will face the same penalties as drunk drivers face for not heeding the warnings on the  medications you take.

Courts issue penalties for DUIs, it's time prescribed drugs taken legally be added to all laws regarding DUIs when they impair ones concentration.

Pharmacists are trained and legally are there for you to ask questions, ask your pharmacist if the prescribed drugs you are taking effect your driving abilities. Taking multiple prescription drugs can have a chemical reaction similar to mixing many different alcoholic drinks, and don't even think of mixing alcohol and prescription drugs.

Take appropriate action before it's too late, "Don't take your meds and drive unless you discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist and they give you a green light. Remember a green light form your medical professionals can avoid running red lights and saving someone's life by not getting behind the wheel.
