Lawyers and Clergy..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

James "Kimo" Rosen self portrait for Halloween, sometimes there is a need for Lawyers and clergy... Can anyone guess what I am in the photo above?

Father Ben of All Saints church in Kapa'a recently blessing our four legged friends!

This blog also appeared as an opinion article in the Kauai Garden Island News;" Everyone needs to make a living." 11-28-11 http://thegardenisland.com/promo/homepage/article_17af734c-1991-11e1-ae51-001cc4c03286.html

Why do attorneys always say,"answer me with a yes or no, understand?"

However when the shoe is on the other foot and an attorney is asked a simple question, they will usually reply , there is no simple yes or no, let me explain...

Why does the clergy, Rabbi's and Pastors tell their congregants  not to work on the Sabbath or religious holidays?  Because those days are the days the clergy are on stage and if we the people went to work they would be out of work with nobody to preach too and collect tithing's.

I guess everyone needs to make a living I can therefore understand Lawyers and clergy much better especially in these rough economic times.

"Love you all..!" 'Chester Lau, aka Unc'

Chester Lau one of dakinetalks most popular guest bloggers is back speaking of the importance of friends... Chester aka Unc, lives on the Hawaiian island of Oahu and is a retired cinematographer....

"Let every one of your friends know you love them. Even if you think they don't love you back..."

One day a woman's husband died, and on that clear, cold morning, in the warmth of their bedroom, the wife was struck with the pain of learning
that sometimes there isn't "anymore."   No more hugs, no more special
moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat, no more
"just one minute."  Sometimes, what we care about the most gets all used
up and goes away, never to return before we can say good-bye, say "I
love you."
So while we have it, it's best  we love it, care for it, fix it when it's
broken and heal it when it's sick. This is true for marriage.....And old
cars... And children with bad report cards, and dogs with bad hips, and
aging parents and grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it,
because we are worth it.
Some things we keep -- like a best friend who moved away or a
sister-in-law after divorce. There are just some things that make us
happy, no matter what.
Life is important, like people we know who are special.. And so,
we keep them close!
I received this from someone who thought I was a 'keeper'!
Then I sent  it to the people I think of in the same way... Now it's your turn to
send this to all those people who are "keepers" in your life, including
the person who sent it, if you feel that way. Suppose one morning you
never wake up, do all your friends know you love them?
I was thinking...I could die today, tomorrow or next week, and I
wondered if I had any wounds needing to be healed, friendships that
needed rekindling or three words needing to be said.
Let every one of your friends know you love them. Even if you
think they don't love you back, you would be amazed at what those
three little words and a smile can do. And just in case I'm gone tomorrow.
I LOVE YOU!!!
Live today because tomorrow is not promised.

"Don't Shoot !" 'Michael Herr' (Aloha Friday)

Renowned author Michael Herr is back guest-blogging on this awesome Aloha Friday talking about another possible conspiracy theory.... Make sure and check out Michael's website at; http://www.michaelherr.com/

ALOHA FRIDAY
October 28

It's Aloha Friday.

"Don't Shoot !"

When I was a kid I had an uncle who might have been a little wacky. He was a fun guy for a kid to be around because of his off-beat humor. One of his favorite expressions whenever I confronted him about anything was "Don't Shoot! I'm out of Season."

I picked up that expression from him and have it used it repeatedly over the years myself. I thought about it again recently when Moammar Qaddafi was captured. As he was confronted by rebel soldiers, hiding in a large pipe/culvert under the road, he is reported to have said, "Don't Shoot! Don't Shoot!"

He didn't say, "All right, you got me". He didn't say, "Okay, I surrender". He didn't even say, "I give up". No, all he said was, "Don't Shoot!".

A while back Saddam Hussein was likewise caught hiding in a bolt hole. I believe he also pleaded with his captors, U.S. soldiers in this instance, not to shoot him.

Both men whined their way into captivity. Neither had the force of personality to stand up and admit who they were and go along with their captors willingly. They both had to be dragged out of their rat-holes.

And now we're done with them, right?

Maybe. Maybe not. I recall seeing a news piece at one time about the large number of body doubles Saddam had. This made it difficult for us to target him. Of course when we caught Saddam, we were able to verify that it was actually him that we had captured.

Not so with Moammar. Moammar was shot almost immediately. In the heat of the moment? Or was he shot to keep anyone from questioning him? From verifying his identify? They did an autopsy on his body, but that was to determine cause of death. Did anyone ask, "Hey, is this him or is this one of his body doubles?" I'll bet we never know the answer to that question.

Keep an eye out for a swarthy guy with a terrible taste in clothes. And if you see him . . . Don't shoot. He's out of season now.

Much aloha.

"Google it, then Google yourself..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

James "Kimo" Rosen is back sounding like baby talk with Google this and Google that....

Google yourself, you won't go blind, promise....
Search engines are the encyclopedia of this era. Anything you need to know you can type into a search engine. Any person you need information on you can type into a search engine. The most popular search engine is "Google"and the term "Google it" has become synonymous with telling someone to look it up on a search engine. Just like the term 'Xerox' became synonymous with the term copy, although there are many copy machine manufacturers 'Xerox' became the hype, just as 'Google'  is now the hype.

The word Google sounds like baby talk, on the contrary it has answers to almost everything. I love to Google names from my past, like old girlfriends or people from elementary school, high school, college and even the names of  those amongst you reading this.

How many people have ever googled themselves? Googling yourself sounds like something the priest might discipline you for,  Googling yourself actually feels good, anyone with a computer who  has not googled themselves is most likely lying... Googling yourself is something almost  everyone has done  but nobody admits to it, plus it just sounds cool to say 'Google it .'

I am recommending to everyone, forget what the masses say and go 'Google' yourself, you won't go blind and you may just learn a thing or two about that person in the mirror, I did.

"My 40Th High School Reunion and Other Fun Stuff..." 'Harmony' (Harmonic Wednesday)

Welcome back dakinetalk's good friend 'Harmony'  for another adventurous  'HarmonicWednesday.' Harmony is currently working on her Masters degree in counseling,  this semester she's studying drug abuse counseling. Harmony  resides in Kapolei, Hawaii on the island of Oahu...

Harmony is a true free spirit as seen here swimming with dolphins on the island of Oahu...

I was traveling from Hawaii to Pittsburgh, PA for my 40Th high school reunion. I had never attended a high school reunion before because Hawaii was too far away. 40 seemed like a worthwhile number, and I could visit other places to get my money’s worth out of the airfare. Speaking of economics, I learned the more places you transfer, the cheaper your flight. I had to fly from Honolulu to Los Angeles to Phoenix to Newark to Pittsburgh to get the cheapest fare! I landed in Pittsburgh, but the reunion wouldn’t happen until the end of my three week trip.
The first thing I did was rent a car. I prefer traveling by bus, but there are certain rural places a bus won’t go. My first destination was Shanksville, PA to visit the Flight 93 Memorial. This was only a few days after the 10 year anniversary of Sept. 11, and the new, national park had just opened. I encountered a major problem while driving there along the PA turnpike. I knew this was a toll road, but I was unfamiliar with the method of payment. I didn't realize I was supposed to take a ticket at the turnpike entrance. I never saw the ticket dispenser. I thought a real person would be there to take my money, but there was no such person. I did notice a red light at the entrance, but I thought if that were meant to stop me, there would be a bar blocking my path. I gingerly drove onto the turnpike expecting a police siren to chase after me. Nothing happened until it was time to exit. Then a real person informed me that because I had neglected to take a ticket, it would cost me $27 to exit as opposed to $4 otherwise.
The Flight 93 Memorial was both sad and awe inspiring to think how the passengers’ actions had saved other lives at the cost of their own. My next stop was Falling Water, the famous home built by architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. I had grown up close by but had never visited and thought now would be my only chance. I had previously booked and paid for my tour. The problem was I had underestimated the distance driving from the Flight 93 Memorial to Falling Water; and I didn't have the right maps because the Memorial had been a last minute decision. Next, I found myself driving while having an anxiety attack about missing my prepaid, nonrefundable tour. Luckily, I was only a little late and able to catch up with the group. Seeing the beauty of this home built over a waterfall helped me to forget my earlier panic.
After returning my car to the Pittsburgh airport, I hopped on a city bus to take me to the Greyhound bus station. (I saved a lot of money riding city buses instead of taxi cabs. I am fortunate they allowed me to carry my large suitcase on the city bus. Honolulu buses forbid large suitcases.) At the Greyhound station, I purchased a two week pass that allowed me to travel anywhere that Greyhound went. I arrived at the bus station in the early evening with plans to go to Universal’s Harry Potter Park in Orlando, FL. I was told there was no bus until the next morning. I had to sleep in the bus station, on a hard, metal bench, with arm rests that prohibited me from lying down. I was told to get in line at gate 8 by 6am the next morning. I was there early, but then I discovered everyone else in line was heading west when I was going south! I complained about the misinformation and was told the bus going south leaves from a different gate at 8. They handed me coupons for free food, to placate my upset mood. The clerk said I could use them at any Greyhound station, but the next station refused to accept them!
After a 30 hour bus trip, I finally made it to the Harry Potter Park at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. I toured Hogwarts Castle and rode a simulated ride that offered the illusion I was riding a broomstick along with Harry and Ron while we played a quid-ditch match. The most interesting thing about this park was the souvenirs. I bought Bertie Botts Every Flavor Beans, and when they say every flavor, that includes boogers, vomit, rotten eggs, and ear wax! Amazingly those flavors tasted like you would expect, but at the same time, they tasted good!
The next day, I visited the other park, Universal Studios. My favorite attraction here was a performance of animal actors. There was one pig who stole the show. He strutted across the stage wearing a sign that read, “Pigs rule!” He was quite a ham!!!
After Florida, I bussed to see relatives in Baltimore. I attended a high school football game because that would be the only opportunity to visit my cousin, Joann. I’m not much of a football fan, but we had a fun visit, and I almost understood the game.
Next stop was South Bend, Indiana to visit my parents and sister. My mom is overly obsessed about what I’m wearing, but the upside of that is she took me shopping for clothes almost every day!
Finally, I bussed to Pittsburgh for my reunion. I didn't know what to expect. I hadn't been part of the in-crowd in high school, but I learned 40 years levels the playing field! People who never spoke to me 40 years ago now showed genuine interest! It helped that I had a few interesting tidbits to tell them. For one thing, I had changed my first name since high school. Now, I told them, “My name used to be Susan, but I changed it to Harmony, and I have been living in Hawaii for the last 30 years!” That got their attention. (I also won the prize for traveling the farthest.) Then the dancing began. I’m the type of person that if I like the music, you can’t keep me in my chair! And I wasn't like that in high school. I’m not sure if revenge is the right word, but it was definitely sweet! Now, I can’t wait for my 50Th reunion!
I flew home from Pittsburgh to Chicago to Phoenix to Los Angeles to Honolulu to get those cheaper rates. I arrived home on Sun. but was so busy with school and work that I couldn’t unpack until Wed. It was an exciting trip, but Dorothy said it best in her famous line, “There’s no place like home!”

"The best bet yet..." 'Chester Lau'

"Chester Lau, aka (Unc) a retired cinematographer from Honolulu Hawaii bets that you'll laugh at this guest blog about betting..."

"You can bet on anything from who will win the Pie eating contest to NFL football games and even what a little old lady can accomplish..."

An elderly woman walked into the Royal Bank of Scotland one morning with a purse full of money. She wanted to open a savings account and insisted on talking to the president of the Bank because, she said, she had a lot of money.

After many lengthy discussions (after all, the client is always right) an employee took the elderly woman to the president's office. The president of the Bank asked her how much she wanted to deposit. She placed her purse on his desk and replied, 165,000'. The president was curious and asked her how she had been able to save so much money . The elderly woman replied that she made bets.

The president was surprised and asked, 'What kind of bets?' The elderly woman replied, 'Well, I bet you 25,000 that your testicles are square.' The president started to laugh and told the woman that it was impossible to win a bet like that.

The woman never batted an eye. She just looked at the president and said, 'Would you like to take my bet ?' 'Certainly', replied the president. 'I bet you 25,000 that my testicles are not square.' 'Done', the elderly woman answered. 'But given the amount of money involved, if you don't mind I would like to come back at 10 ' clock tomorrow morning with my lawyer as a witness.' 'No problem', said the president of the Bank confidently. That night, the president became very nervous about the bet and spent a long time in front of the mirror examining his testicles, turning them this way and that, checking them over again and again until he was positive that no one could consider his testicles as square and reassuring himself that there was no way he could lose the bet.

The next morning at exactly 10 o'clock the elderly woman arrived at the president's office with her lawyer and acknowledged the 25,000 bet made the day before that the president's testicles were square. The president confirmed that the bet was the same as the one made the day before. Then the elderly woman asked him to drop his pants etc. so that she and her lawyer could see clearly. The president was happy to oblige.

The elderly woman came closer so she could see better and asked the president if she could touch them. 'Of course', said the president. 'Given the amount of money involved, you should be 100% sure.' The elderly woman did so with a little smile. Suddenly the president noticed that the lawyer was banging his head against the wall. He asked the elderly woman why he was doing that and she replied, 'Oh, it's probably because I bet him100,000 that around 10 o'clock in the morning I would be holding the balls of the President of the Royal Bank of Scotland !'

"Seasons of the East Coast..." Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Monday)

Judith Whitehead is back guest-blogging on this Inspirational Monday about  the seasons of nature...Judith lives in Amherst N.Y. has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for almost 30 years...

"As we approach Halloween quickly and dream of Thanksgiving and all the great smells that lie ahead..."

One of the best times of the  year is quickly approaching in New York, Fall, or Autumn, or the precursor to Winter. It is one of the best times of the year for us, the earth is starting its preparation for winter.  Leaves are slowly beginning to change and  fall, and the air is cold and crisp in the morning.  Pumpkins and cider  Are being sold everywhere, hay rides are offered at the farms and bushels of apples can be found in every store just ready to make applesauce with or pies . In a way, a sadness is in the air as well because we know what’s about to happen…the white stuff can fly though the air at any minute…snow.
We know in Buffalo that all too often today can be a sunny, semi-warm day only to wake up to the cold blowing snow the next,  at this time of year.  We try and trick our selves  at this time of year, telling ourselves that this will be a mild winter and maybe there  won’t be much snow; we just don’t learn.

When you choose to live in this part of the country, it’s inevitable.  Winter has never let us down yet.
So as I enjoy the fresh smell of Fall, knit a new scarf for the winter and cover my out of  door  bushes so the deer don’t get too carried away this year, I will reminisce about what a wonderfully warm summer we just had, all the trips and enjoyable things that happened this year, and batten down the hatches for another cold season that just lies ahead.

As we approach Halloween quickly and dream of Thanksgiving and all the great smells that lie ahead, I can only hope we don’t get snow for these up in coming holidays;  nature has tricked us before.
