So you thought you had a modern day TV? Technology is going rampant and what was state of the art yesterday will soon be a dinosaur...Costco Kaua'i is now selling Sony flat screen HD 32' TVs without wifi  for $289.00. One year ago the same TV was around $800.00.


So you thought you had a modern day TV? Technology is going rampant and what was state of the art yesterday will soon be a dinosaur... 

Technology is back, just a few years back most people, hotels, motels, restaurants and bars sold their old TV sets in favor of the new flat screen HD technology.  
 The flat screen technology is still with us with a few additions that everyone will soon be addicted too, just like they are to their cell phones and computers. The new TVs are built more like computers, the major difference in the TVs is in built-in wifi, allowing Internet access on your TV without any cables.

Along with the new TVs, Netflix a once financially struggling corporation is now one of the best stocks on the interchange.  Netflix has actually bought into most television manufacturers channel controls, you now have netflix listed as a channel on most remote controls.

It is now possible to have your own personal video library with over 30,000 movies and TV shows streamlined to your television for the low monthly price of $7.99.

The future is bright for Netflix and not so bright for the cable companies, but as far as your HDTV goes, it's time once again to buy a new one, that is until next year when you will need to buy yet another TV with features not yet thought of.  Did someone say built in web-cams, virtual 3-D and smellovision (sic)?

"Enjoy your life like the Mexican fishermen..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau'

Chester Lau, aka "Unc" was  one of two cinematographer in the US Army who  filmed the 1952 summer Olympics in Helsinki,Finland for the military. He has walked amongst 40,000  on the Nude beach at Cape D'agde in the French Riviera in  1996 &1997 , and was one of  Jack Lords favorite crew members and camera-man on the original Hawaii Five O. "Unc" currently is retired on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. We see both sides of Unc today,  the serious and the not so serious, enjoy...

As Lao Tzu said "  You are a rich man when you know what is enough" Enjoy your life like the Mexican fishermen.                                                                                                                      
Interesting perspective……Life Explained                                    
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village.                   
                                                                     
A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.                                        
                                                                     
"Not very long." they answered in unison.                                
                                                                     
"Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?"                          
                                                                     
The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.                
                                                                     
"But what do you do with the rest of your time?"                          
                                                                                                       
"We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas with our wives.  In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs.                  
                                                                     
We have a full life."                                                      
                                                                     
The tourist interrupted,                                                  
                                                                                                                
"I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you  !!! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."
                       
"And after that?"                                                          
                                                                     
"With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers.                      
Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant.                                        
                                                                     
                                                                     
You can then leave this little village and move to  Mexico City , Los Angeles ,  New York City  or even Kauai in the Hawaiian islands !  From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."                      
                                                                                                                   
"How long would that take?"                                              
                                                                     
"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years." replied the tourist.                  
                                                                     
"And after that?"                                                          
                                                                     
"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting, " answered the tourist, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!"                
                                                                     
"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the fishermen.                  
                                                                                                           
"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife                            
and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."    
          
“That’s what I am doing now” Replied the fisherman                                                                                              
And the moral of this story is:          ........ Know where you're going in life.... you may already be there !

Local Kaua'i Politics..." James "Kimo" Rosen

Kaua'i is eye candy to ones eyes,  however with only one major  road to get around an island of over 60,000 is somewhat of a nebulous scenario..."  Even if you are not a resident this could effect you if you ever visit our cosmic hamlet, so read on..."

Mr. Mickens states,"Get those cane haul roads open starting with the long-time controversial “emergency” road from the Wailua River to the Hanama‘ulu turn off. The “temporary” Kapa‘a bypass road is a shinning example of a successful operation put in place years ago."
I am in total agreement that our cosmic hamlet needs more roads. One major road from one end of the island to the other is somewhat nebulous. More roads means less traffic, less stress, and options during emergencies.
On the other hand I am in total dis-agreement on Glen's assumption that 95% of the island population feels the pedestrian trail is being shoved down it's throat, in actuality it is the best use of taxpayer I have ever witnessed on Kauai.
I know many people who bike , walk and bus as their primary means of transportation, myself included in this mix.
My question to Mr. Mickens,why can't we have both, why one without the other as you seem to debate ?More roads and more trails. Who say's we can't have our poi and eat it too.

 De-clutter your closets and pay it forward

This year during the long New Years Day weekend we had a cold snap in our area, the first of the year where the temperatures dropped to 10 degrees. I heard the announcement that there would be extra room opened up at the City Mission and additional facilities in the area to make room for those who had no place to stay. No one can stay outside for very long in 10 degrees, it’s unbearable to with-stand.

I decided to make it my New Years project to declutter the closets and basement and do some long needed clearing out of unused boots, shoes etc. I managed to collect 4 large garbage bags of nearly new things that were sitting around that most likely would never get used for that rainy day and take them down to the city mission.

At 7am with open arms they were there to greet me with many smiles and many thanks.

It’s an easy thing to do; want to feel good and help someone? Clean out those unused items that you are holding on to that you know you will never use and help someone, pay it forward this year. Especially in the cold weather in the East, you could save a life.

In a recent news broadcast, it was announced that Lorena Bobbitt's sister Louella was arrested for an alleged attempt to perform the same act on her husband as her famous sister had done several years ago .

Sources reveal the sister was not as accurate as Lorena ..

She allegedly missed the target and stabbed her husband in the upper thigh causing severe muscle and tendon damage . The husband is reported to be in serious, but stable Condition, and Louella has been charged with . . . ?

"There are many roads in life and many roads that can lead to the same destination..." (Kaua'i resident and Kumu Kalvin Ho gives a blessing to the Jewish people of Kauai on the recent completion of  their new Torah scroll...)

It's all true if you believe it in your heart! There are many roads in life and many roads that can lead to the same destination...
Everyone has a soul, and every-one's soul has been programmed with either some religion are no religion, whatever religion you choose or not choose to believe is embedded in our souls as the one and only way.
Christians believe in heaven and hell and of meeting Jesus someday,  this is true, if you believe it to be true.
Orthodox Jews believe they will keep coming back in reincarnated lives until they have lived the perfect life that the L-rd intended. This is also true if it is ingrained in your mind.
Mormons, Jehovah witnesses, Seven day Adventists, Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, even agnostic and atheists are all correct. From Hava Nagila to silent night, even white Christmas which by the way was written by Irving Berlin a Jew, are also truths if you so believe.
The powers of prayer and positive energies  are greater when you are in a group of people who think similar, you may have euphoric feelings and energies so intense that they can heal and even hurt people if so desired.
So many wars have been fought over religion, and so many have died in vain, when in theory we are all one.

It's Aloha Friday.

SERIOUS, AND MAYBE DISTURBING, POST

Aloha folks. I expect to see some discussion of the death penalty over the next few weeks. See, a guy that a woman in a trailer park asked to baby-sit her young daughter wound up beating the girl to death and then dismembering her.

Now I'm sure it'll take a long time to try this guy . . . despite the mountain of evidence against him. And then it'll take a while for jury to decide on a verdict. And if they do decide to hand down a death sentence, it will take years and years and years, appeal after appeal after appeal before that sentence is finally carried out. And the odds are pretty good that sentence never will be carried out. Instead perhaps some other inmate, repulsed by a child-killer sharing the same jail with him, will use a shiv (look it up) to slash his throat. Or, just as likely, this piece of excrement will live a long life in his cell until natural causes bring about his end. Possibly a heart attack or stroke from eating too well, not getting enough exercise, and drinking too much booze made in his toilet bowl.

Not good enough for me. I am against the death penalty. I think these kind of people should be released. At high noon. On a day when all the police officers in the town have been assigned duties far away from the courthouse. And have been told to keep their communication devices turned off.

Yes. Release this guy at high noon. Publicize his impending release in the paper. Lock the door behind him and pull the shades once he's outside. Maybe even forget to take his leg shackles off before you release him.

If he's truly innocent no one will touch him and he can walk free.

But if he's not innocent, if he did kill this little girl, then perhaps I and a couple of dozen other like-minded citizens will choose to meet him outside the courthouse. We'll welcome him back into the outside world. Just before he leaves it for good.

Yep. I'm against the State carrying out the death penalty. The State takes too long. Leave it to me instead.
