Local Kaua'i Politics..." James "Kimo" Rosen

Kaua'i is eye candy to ones eyes,  however with only one major  road to get around an island of over 60,000 is somewhat of a nebulous scenario..."  Even if you are not a resident this could effect you if you ever visit our cosmic hamlet, so read on..."

This blog  also appeared ironically this same day 01-09-12 in the Kauai Garden Island news as an opinion article titled, "More roads and trails..."

Mr. Micken's recent  Letter to the editor"Solving Kauai's transportation woes," is half right. http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-friday-january/article_4df33118-3841-11e1-ae66-0019bb2963f4.html
Mr. Mickens states,"Get those cane haul roads open starting with the long-time controversial “emergency” road from the Wailua River to the Hanama‘ulu turn off. The “temporary” Kapa‘a bypass road is a shinning example of a successful operation put in place years ago."
I am in total agreement that our cosmic hamlet needs more roads. One major road from one end of the island to the other is somewhat nebulous. More roads means less traffic, less stress, and options during emergencies.
On the other hand I am in total dis-agreement on Glen's assumption that 95% of the island population feels the pedestrian trail is being shoved down it's throat, in actuality it is the best use of taxpayer I have ever witnessed on Kauai.
I know many people who bike , walk and bus as their primary means of transportation, myself included in this mix.
My question to Mr. Mickens, why can't we have both, why one without the other as you seem to debate ?More roads and more trails. Who say's we can't have our poi and eat it too.

via Kauai garden Island news;"Kimo, one of the reasons we can't afford both roads and trails is because those who pay the high taxes can't afford anymore more gifts to the freeloaders. You ride the bus, which is paid for by our county taxes. The bus rides almost exclusively on state roads, which are paid for by our state taxes. But our county roads are falling apart with pot-holes, cracks and unprofessional repairs that fall apart in only a few weeks after repair. It costs drivers a lot to purchase a vehicle, pay its license and gas tax, repair it and also pay the tax for your bus service. You should be paying the full cost of bus service. We can't carry ladders and machinery to work on the bus. You can't carry six bags of groceries for your family when you only have one day a week to shop. You can't rush your kid to the doctor when you have to wait for a bus. Join the real world. Not everyone is a man of leisure expecting the government to take care of all their needs."

via Kauai Garden island news;"Mr. Rosen, I agree that having no alternative routes in case of traffic accidents, tsunamis, etc is not good. However, you state "More roads mean less traffic...." Ironically, that's not usually true. Read "The end of the Road: The World Car Crisis and How To Solve It," by Wofgang Zuckermann.

You are so right, Kimo.
For those of us who do not live on the beautiful island of Kaua‘i, when we have the rare treat of a visit to paradise, we do not take it for granted and we cherish the beauty of nature.

We do look to the proud stewards fortunate and blessed to call this sacred treasure their "home" to safeguard it until our next opportunity to visit.

This includes smart civic decisions about transportation and infrastructure, including green alternatives, public transport, and adequate local infrastructure of the least invasive nature.

Kimo for Kounty Kouncil!"
