Chanukah is upon us


It’s that time of year again to celebrate the festival of lights;  Chanukah comes early this year, every year on a different day.  It has been as early as November and as late as the end of December. 

 The general public are still confused that it is not the Jewish Xmas 

I have stopped explaining over the years . It seems people like to lump similar like- holidays together for simplicity sake.  I grew up with…You don’t have a tree”…..???  it’s hard for people to understand that our festival of lights is a more minor holiday for us; it’s more for the children to celebrate the eight days of light that the oil lasted in the desert and that is why it’s called the festival of light.

 The Jewish holidays that fall in the fall time of year, Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are the most religious time for us.

So I will make some latkes, (potato pancakes) starting Saturday night and enjoy that nice oily smell this time of year.  We eat things made with oil to remember those eight nights and we will still exchange some presents for our celebration and light our candles…one for each night to remember the event.

Chanukah, or Hanukkah?   The Jews are split on the spelling  of the miraculous holiday celebrated because the oil that was intended for one day's light lasted eight days.

The Gentiles don't  have a problem with the spelling of Christmas. How many people spell Christmas, Kristmas? (X-mas doesn't count)

One reason I enjoy being of Jewish faith and heritage is because we are raised to believe there is more than one way to do things, they say, "there is more than one road to Rome." With that said I would like to wish you from the Garden Island of Kaua'i, A very Happy Chanukaua'i and for those who celebrate Christmas a very Mary Kristmas!

Black Friday   is routinely the busiest retail shopping day of the year. Black Friday originated in Philadelphia back around 1975, which originally was used to describe the traffic mayhem that occurred the day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday actually indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, hence the term "in the black..." Black is also the color of authority and power. It is popular in fashion because it makes people look thinner. Priests wear black to signify submission to G-d.  black can also indicate evil, so look out  all you Black Friday shoppers.

For the week after Thanksgiving every-day should have a color designate not just Black Friday.

I would like to propose the following colors to represent the days of the week commencing  after Black Friday;

 1- White Saturday,  Brides wear white, white goes with everything and don't forget that doctors and other medical professionals along with chefs wear white. White Saturday would be the day you go to your psychiatrist wondering why you ate so much on Thanksgiving and spent your life savings on Black Friday, a day so designated to seeing medical professionals wearing white, hence white Saturday.

2-Red-Sunday, Red is the color of love, red is also the most emotional color, it stimulates a faster heartbeat.  red clothing makes one look heavier, and red stands out and is noticed, that's why many fire engines are painted red. Red attracts attention. Red Sunday would be  the day  that hospitals are overwhelmed with heart attacks from overeating on Thanksgiving and arguing with loved ones.

3- Blue Monday, blue is the color of the sky and ocean, blue is tranquil causing the body to produce calming chemicals, they say wear blue to a job interview, since blue symbolizes loyalty. Blue Monday would be the day you go to your pharmacist to fill your perscription of anti-depressants from the depressions brought on by visiting family during the holidays, the term  Blue Monday is said to defer one from having the blues which is why everyone shops the Internet on this day and has also taken on the moniker of "Cyber-Monday."

4- Green Tuesday, symbolizes nature and is the most popular decorating color,  Green Tuesday would be the day of the week proceeding Thanksgiving where the health food stores  have record sales because of all the heartache and upset stomachs since Thanksgiving day and people decide a more natural lifestyle may be right  for them.

5- Finally we have  Yellow Wednesday, people lose their tempers more often in yellow rooms and babies cry more when left in yellow rooms, Yellow is also an attention-getter, many magazine covers are in bright yellow to get our attention from up to 10 feet away.

Yellow Wednesday would be the day that  stores try to get our attention  once again  with big  yellow signs that read, 'Suckers!'

There is a simple solution in stopping  the problems that arise every election day.

This past year in Honolulu alone  many precincts didn't have enough ballots. There are always concerns of long lines and not being able to make it to the polls by the time they close.

Hawai'i has more than half the voting population voting  absentee by mail. Why not just  convert every citizen to absentee voting by mail and avoid all the mayhem associated with election day?

There's the old theory of "KISS" (Keep it Super Simple) which applies to the concept of 100% absentee voting. Since converting to this system in Oregon it has proven overwhelmingly successful in not only time and money but in giving people time to research what their voting on. Brochures are  sent with the ballots explaining all measures and platforms of those running for office. Along with being able to Google anything you may have in question with your ballot right in front of you seems to be a win win for all

Governor  Abercrombie announced he will be proposing a measure in January to move our state toward 100 percent mail-in voting.  Senators, Congressman and people of Hawai'i can save the state a lot of money, heartache and stress by just Keeping things super simple. Just 'KISS" everyone.

An ancient pagan holiday, the shortest day of the year-the Winter Solstice- is the time of the year when the Sun God is born to the Mother Goddess. Observers of the night sky knew it was a time when the sun-which began its journey north and the days grew short, the nights long- seems to stand still on the horizon. For three days it moves neither north nor south, but on  the third day it  begins  its journey south and the days grow longer. If winters here can spring be far behind?

For shepherds and those who were observers of the night sky-they’d been studying it for thousands of years and could predict it- it was a natural, normal, seasonal event. For leaders-especially religious leaders- it was considered a holy event. For the people it was  a time of boisterous partying. Many myths, wonderful stories and traditions found root here.

Christmas trees? Believe it or not the Yule tree represented the phallus. The spirit of fertility. Did you know gifts under the tree actually symbolize semen springing from the phallus?

No religion could erase such a celebration so those selling religion just changed the story a bit and along came a mama, a papa, a baby and three wise men. Toss in some cows and sheep,  an angel or two and a star in east and away we go..

Eventually Christmas became a wondrous capitalistic sending spree. Buy. Buy. Buy. Spend. Spend. Spend.  Dollar signs dripped like semen from the tree.

…and remember semen dripping ? Kaua'i Chief of Police Darryl Perry recently posted his conversation with a scammer on Youtube in hopes it will save you from being scammed!

Imagine being a scammer and having a list of phone numbers and one of those phone numbers  just happens to belong to the Chief of police! What are the odds?   Like winning the lottery or being struck by lightning? I am sure the Chief would prefer winning the lottery (that's if we had a lottery) but none the less is glad he wasn't struck by lightning.

The scammer pretending to be from New York and telling the Chief he has won $250,000 but will need  a check for taxes, he asks the chief to send $500.00 via western Union, the chief agrees using the fictitious name of Robert Silva, while the scammer with a foreign accent uses the name Peter Wallace.
