"The Princess..." 'Marvin Gross'

The comedian, Marvin Gross the financial advisor from the suburbs has another funny one... Enjoy.

Once upon  a time there lived a king.
The king had a  beautiful daughter, The PRINCESS..

But  there was a problem. Everything the princess  touched would melt.
No matter  what;
Metal,
Wood,
Stone,
Anything  she touched would melt.

Because  of this, men were afraid of her. Nobody would  dare marry her.

The  king despaired. What could he do to help his  daughter?

He  consulted his wizards and magicians. One wizard  told the king,
'If your daughter touches one  thing that does not melt in her  hands,
  she will  be cured.'

The  king was overjoyed and came up with a plan.

The  next day, he held a competition. Any man that  could bring his daughter
an object  that would not melt would marry her and inherit  the king's wealth...

THREE  YOUNG PRINCES TOOK UP THE CHALLENGE.

The  first brought a sword of the finest steel.

But  alas, when the princess touched it, it melted.
The prince went away sadly .

The second  prince brought diamonds.
He thought  diamonds are the hardest substance in the world  and would not melt. But alas, once the princess  touched them, they melted.

He too  was sent away disappointed.

The  third prince approached. He told the princess,
'Put your hand in my pocket and feel what is  in there.'

The princess did as she was  told, though she turned red .

She  felt something hard. She held it in her hand.
And it did  not melt!!!

The  king was overjoyed. Everybody in the kingdom was  overjoyed.

And  the third prince married the princess and they  both lived happily ever after.

Question:  What was in the prince's pants?  Scroll down...

M & M's of course!
They  melt in your mouth, not in your hand.
What  were you thinking??
I STILL  WORRY ABOUT YOU SOMETIMES!!!!

"Picking about..." 'Obama da Dog'

Obama Da Dog gets involved in many political scenes on the Cosmic Garden Isle...

Call us 'Nitpickers, Nat-pickers or even  No-see-um pickers, all that is wanted is to better the cause at hand.

There  are clouds of thousands of  nits and nat's this time of year all over Kaua'i. The other day riding my bicycle in Kapa'a town I rode through a swarm of nat's, they covered my shirt, face and sunglasses, they got all in my hair and mouth, it was not a fun experience.

Gnats are actually flies. They go by numerous names inclusive of punkies,Buffalo gnats, Buffalo flies, eye gnats, black flies, hippelates flies, no-seeums and just plain old nats. Most Gnats bite.

Open dismantling from  my bicycle I thought of  Glenn Mickens and Alfred Lauretta (two local nitpickers, or watchdogs as they prefer to be called....) exchanging barbs about what  defines a nitpicker, as I began removing and picking off of my body  all the nit's and nat's, does this make me a nitpicker or a natpicker?  I  actually prefer no see-um-picker....

Whether your a nitpicker, natpicker, or no-see-um-picker, all pickers want one thing, to better Kaua'i, or their host city and any other thing they happen to be picking about.

"A celebration of 92 years young..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspirational Monday and the 10Th anniversary of 911)

Judith Whitehead is back guest-blogging on this Inspirational Monday and  the 10Th anniversary of '911.'  I find it appropriate and fitting the celebration of her fathers 92 years on this planet, through all the ups and downs we still go on. Just as our country has grown all of us have grown and Judy's father seems to have grown older and wiser too. God Bless America and G-d bless Bert Meyers (Judy's dad) on his 92 birthday. It may be September 12Th, however an extra day of remembrance never hurt anyone.

Judy Whitehead and family celebrate her fathers life and wisdom at the Olive Garden or somewhere similar...
Lachayim, (To Life!)
Many of us “ youngsters” think of age as a relative thing. It is easy to say that phrase if you are in your 40’s, 50’s, 60’s or even 70’s but when you reach your 80’s or 90’s it is only a phrase that takes on new meaning. We can only control our attitude and “ take on life” to a certain extent; after a point, our brains begin to take over. It seems that no matter how much fish oil, fresh air, exercise and positive attitudes we enjoy, the brain takes control of our destiny.

I have slowly witnessed the aging process of my own dad over the last few years. There seems to be a big difference between the 80’s to the 90’s. The last 10 years have taken a toll on a most positive, virile, healthy man. One thing has stayed consistent with my 92 year old father, he never, ever complains.
In his own quiet way, he has taken a back seat to what I am sure he realizes is the aging process.
My dad who at one time would swap stories with anyone with a pulse and now become a quiet bystander who has chosen to sit and watch the world go by without hardly a word spoken. Day by day, I witness my dad slowly slipping away into a new personality, someone who has become complacent about his own life. A sadness has taken him over and daily confusion clutters his mind of even the simple tasks that we youngsters all take for granted. If each day just rolls into the next, how do we even know what day it is.

We go through the motions of daily life only to repeat the same things the next day. I think there is some comfort in repetitive tasks but are we destined to live “Ground Hog Day” as in Bill Murray's famous movie years ago. What it seems to come all down to is that destiny has a mind of its’ own . We can lead healthy lives, be proactive in our own health and well being but our genes seem to play a major role in our futures.
The message here is to live the best life you know how that brings you the utmost happiness for we can’t predict what our futures will hold out for us. Will we be running marathons until we reach 90? Will we be traveling and enjoying our families well into our 90’s? Its’ in Gods Hands after a certain point.
So this week, we will gather around my 92 year old dad, remind him he has reached another milestone, sing to him and congratulate him and tell him he looks wonderful and he will smile back in silence. I don’t know what he is thinking but I still make an effort to talk about the old days that may bring comfort to him, and remind him that he was a vital human being back in the day. I can only pray that as he shuffles along measuring each step so as not to fall, that he is pain free and still happy to be with us.

"Facts of Life..." James "Kimo" Rosen

"Let me tell ya bout the birds and the bees and the flowers and the trees and a thing up above, and a thing called Love..." Please take a moment to remember all the Americans who lost their lives 10 years ago today...  I was going to do something serious for this day in history, however I figured everyone, news media and many blogs will cover it much better than dakinetalk. My hope is to bring  a smile to your face and to be thankful we live in America!
James Kimo Rosen and his nephew Jason Gross back in 1980 somewhere in Florida...

I remember when my father got up enough nerve to confront me about the 'birds and the bees,' he said, "son I'd like to have a talk with you about girls, and how baby's are made." My reply was "OK Dad, what do you need to know." This is a standing  joke, however  I actually really said those words.

It's now many years later and we live in a different world today, recently a 12 year old boy asked his father about the facts of life and here is what he said,
"Daddy, how was I born? Well, son, your Mom & I first got together in a chat room on Yahoo. Then I set up a date via e-mail with your Mom & we met at a cyber-cafe. We snuck into a secluded room & googled each other. There your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither of us had used a firewall & since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said: 'You got Male"

We can joke  all we want, that is the beauty of our country, land of the free and the home of the brave. Please take a moment of silence in memory of all  those who lost their lives in the September 11Th attacks ten years ago today, and all the brave men and woman in combat who have given the greatest sacrifice... G-d Bless America

"Something is better than nothing..." 'Obama Da Dog'

Obama da dog has many ways to not go hungry...This blog also ran as a letter to the editor in the Kauai Garden Island News on 09-09-11

Soup kitchens and churches are always giving to the needy...

I  read with dismay the recent  well written and factual article by Venessa Vanvoorhis,"Both food banks charge agencies."
http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/article_7e13086e-d928-11e0-808f-001cc4c03286.html?mode=story

It comes down to economics 101, every business whether for profit or non-profit has operating expenses. Rent, electric, water, gas, general maintenance, phone, Internet, and employees, even a volunteer cost money to have around since all businesses are required to have insurance.
As long as people are benefiting, let it go, there's bigger fish to fry out there than a couple of agencies trying to help the needed.

For those concerned about where their charitable donations are going you can do what I do. I always give directly to someone in need, I will see a hungry guy and slip him a few bucks, or anonymously leave things for people I feel need things.

Here's what happens, let's say for instance you give money to the American cancer society, how much of that donation actually goes to fight cancer verses paying an executive director, renting a nice office space, business lunches, mileage expenses etc? Quite a bit.

Don't get me wrong, I am happy for these charities and food banks, but there is not one non-profit out there that does not have operating expenses and if you don't like it, find another way to give, since something is better than nothing.

"Public Access — Private Restrictions..." Michael Herr' (Aloha Friday)

Renowned author Michael Herr is back on this awesome Aloha Friday talking about  boundaries... Make sure and check out Michael's website at; http://www.michaelherr.com/

This is a sign that can be seen many places on The Garden Island... Places that were once free to hike, play, fish and  roam are now being blocked...
ALOHA FRIDAY
September 9

It's Aloha Friday.

Public Access — Private Restrictions

A long time ago in Hawaii many visitors to the islands thought that the largest landowner in the islands was a Mister Kapu. They thought this because everywhere you went out into the countryside or along the ocean you saw fences with this sign posted on them "KAPU — Keep Out".

Locals, however, knew that Kapu was a Hawaiian word meaning that something was forbidden or prohibited.

Mostly "Kapu" signs have been replaced with signs proclaiming "No Trespassing". And those signs have been a major source of contention, not only in Hawaii but along the coast of California. There the California Coastal Commission has been somewhat successful in requiring landowners to make provision for access to the coast.

Nowadays many of those signs have been put up by those with enough money to buy a piece of land fronting the coast. And while the beach, up to the high tide mark, has been declared public property, the access to those beaches has been cut off by many of these landowners. In some places landowners have, sometimes with government urging, provided access paths across their property down to the beaches. Some hotels, despite their gated entrances, have been forced to provide parking and a certain number of access permits each day to those who want to visit their beaches.

Other landowners have dug in their heels and fought to keep people from walking across their land. Ignoring the fact that the ocean belongs to all. In Hawaii the vast majority of those who seek access, who seek the ocean that nourished them all their life, do not have the money or the knowledge of law that would help them fight for their rights. They must rely instead on lawyers willing to work pro bono and on groups willing to represent the interests of the many against the few.

Kapu or No Trespassing . . . either command needs to be given with due consideration to the needs and rights of people who, sometimes for generations, have enjoyed access to an area or an activity. And in deciding who shall have access, the spirit of Aloha must prevail.

Much aloha.
