Renew, refresh and schmooze 

This week Friday will be not only a TGIF day but the annual Ophthalmology seminar that I will attend in Rochester at Strong Hospital.

 It's a time to renew, refresh and schmooze with all my colleagues that attend from the East Coast.  It is always well attended and brings a new prospective to my profession.  Good food, good company and new knowledge...a winning combination..and...it's supposed to NOT snow on Friday.

Beer or face creme

A husband and wife are shopping in their local Wal-Mart. The husband picks up a ...case of Miller Lite and puts it in their cart.

'What do you think you're doing?' asks the wife. 'They're on sale, only $10 for 24 cans', he replies. 'Put them back, it's a waste of money', demands the wife, and so he does and they carry on shopping.

A few aisles further on along, the woman picks up a $20 jar of ...face cream and puts it in the basket.

What do you think you're doing?' asks the husband... "It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful,' replies the wife.

Her husband retorts: 'So does 24 cans of Miller Lite and it's half the price....'

Just Say Yes!

No to the Superferry, no to plastic bags, No to GMO's, no to more roads, no to  a Walmart super center and currently no to a dairy. There is a group on Kauai we refer to as the Anti's, formerly known as the contrarians.

Anti's are basically against anything that   could help civilization progress into the 21st century. Most anti's are transplants from the mainland USA, most are liberal.  The anti's are usually active in politics and one of the first things they do upon relocating to a new community is register to vote.

Many  local people  have given up on the political process, and for good reason. The dilemma lies in that there is a large number of born and raised local that wanted a ferry system, that wanted a Walmart super center, wanted more roads and want the Rainbow papaya industry to continue.  

Everyone needs to vote, we may not have the best choices and more times than not we vote for the better of the two evils.

It's time to say yes! Please everyone, register to vote, and then don't forget to vote. Yes is not a dirty word!

Kauai’s ‘antis’ intimidate locals

 Movie Stars and stuff 

“I was a movie star once.”

“Ignore her. She’s trying out for a part in Jurassic World.”

“The oldest lady dinosaur in the flock?”

“Did dinosaurs come in flocks?”

“They came in herds-herbivores- or packs-carnivores. I’m surrounded by idiots. Shut up and eat your cracker. This is my story.”

“Pass the dip.”

“It was a hundred years ago. We were beautiful then.”

“This cracker is stale and the dip’s icky.”

“Columbia Pictures had blocked pesos in the Philippines, so they sent a flock of Hollywood types, a director, a darling starlit, a handsome guy who wore makeup in the day time and a couple of really weird scripts. I was a darling on the stage of the Manila Theater Guild and all guild members tried out for parts. I was cast as a singer.

Our set was a dive on the waterfront. I wore a black lace terno. Fitted to the knees and then flared, I loved it. Gorgeous sleeves. It was beautiful. It was me. It was mine.”

“Major production. Bring your own costume.”

“Yeah? Well, the night of first filming was big time.The entire  block around the joint was cordoned off. Yellow ribbons, cops galore. We arrived on the set in long black limousines. Glorious stars on a red carpet.  It was a dance hall and a bar, while bright white whirligig lights-the rage of olden days-spun and spattered as extras danced the night away on a cold hard solid concrete floor.

I think it must have taken twenty shots to get me through my big scene. I’m a terrible singer. But between takes I sat at a round table with the handsome Hollywood actor drinking coca cola laced with rum. My performance kept getting better and better. So I was told.

Between sacred move star land there was a  bar where commoners were corralled   behind a four-foot high concrete wall. But it wasn’t long before a tipsy scruffy groundling clambered over the wall and walked a crooked mile to our star-studded table.”

“I know who you are,” he blubbered  and began at the top of a list of famous names in the movie business. I shook my head. At the end of the list he slobbered in nasty anger, “Then who are you?”

“I’m Bettejo Dux,”I responded hiccuping with great dignity.

“Never heard of’ya,” he stumbled his way back to the wall and disappeared head first, ass over tea kettle, on there other side. I hoped he landed on his head.

“Isn't that  pain in the neck?” My handsome companion said, continuing to rub my foot. Standing for hours holding up a mike does make your feet hurt. “Being accosted by creeps like that is part of the price we pay for fame.

“The price is too high.” I wobbled from the table took center stage and did a perfect take. All the extras  applauded. They could rest their feet.


I don’t like making movies. Being yelled at by a director with a bull horn is not healthy.

The Governor of Hawa'ii is jogging with his dog along a nature trail.
A coyote jumps out and attacks the Governor's dog, then bites the Governor. 

The Governor starts to intervene, but reflects upon the movie"Bambi" and
then realizes he should stop because the coyote is only doing what is natural. 

He calls animal control. Animal Control captures the coyote and bills
the state $200 testing it for diseases and $500 for relocating it. 

He calls a veterinarian. The vet collects the dead dog and bills the
State $200 testing it for diseases. 

The Governor goes to hospital and spends $3,500 getting checked for
diseases from the coyote and on getting his bite wound bandaged. 

The running trail gets shut down for 6 months while Fish & Game conducts
a $100,000 survey to make sure the area is now free of dangerous animals. 

The Governor spends $50,000 in state funds implementing a
"coyote awareness program" for residents of the area. 

The State Legislature spends $2 million to study how to better treat rabies
and how to permanently eradicate the disease throughout the world. 

The Governor's security agent is fired for not stopping the attack.
The state spends $150,000 to hire and train a new agent with
additional special training re the nature of coyotes. 

PETA protests the coyote's relocation and files a $5 million
suit against the state. 


Alaska


The Governor of Alaska is jogging with his dog along a nature trail.
A coyote jumps out and attacks his dog. 

The Governor shoots the coyote with his state-issued pistol and keeps jogging.
The Governor has spent $.50 on a .45 ACP hollow point cartridge. 

The buzzards eat the dead coyote. 

And that, my friends, is why Hawaii  is broke and Alaska is not.

Hi Uncle Tom,
I am a lady aged 26, I left my husband with the maid and my baby at home, I drove for just
about 2 km from home & my car engine started to overheat so I had to turn back to get another
car, when I got home I found my husband in bed with our maid, I don't know what to do now please help me.

UNCLE TOM'S REPLY:

Over heating of the engine after such short distance can be caused by problems associated with the radiator, you need to check the oil and water level in your engine before you start your journey, you must also make sure your car is
serviced regularly to avoid problems in future hope this helps.

"A flood of memories..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

A flood of memories, remembering the  good Ole days....

I work with a girl that is half my age...she could be my daughter...the other day we began to discuss the advances that have been made in TV watching and programming.  She told me her son liked to watch the old cartoons of Tom and Jerry and Jetsons. A flood of memories came back to me about the good ole days when TV was simple with simple plots, black and white and one had to get up from their seat to turn the channel. I can't help but believe that those simple times were so much better for everyone in so many ways.  First of all, watching TV brought more exercise ; you had to actually move to surf the channels, plots were so simple and just enjoyable...no violence in programming for kids, just good fun.  And in our house there was a limit to how many hours we were allowed to watch the mindless TV...no day time watching except on Saturday am and weekday evenings.  

There were more important things to do besides sitting in front of the tube such as cleaning our rooms or just playing outside in the FRESH air.  Now our children are being raised on the clicker TV where we can view hundred of channels with a movement of one finger; kids veg out on the couch for hours at a time and snack - maybe this has only complicated our children's  health in more than one way...I guess that's why we call them the GOOD OLE Days.
