"Bumper to bumper nightmare..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

"Traffic is not only a problem in major cities but small island communities with lack of roads..." This blog is about Kaua'i but will most likely apply to where you live too...
There is no denial , Kaua'i can no longer continue to have just  one major road from one end of the island to the other.

This latest storm with all the flooding and closure of the Kapa'a bypass was a nightmare of bumper to bumper traffic from Anahola to Wailua and beyond.
I was walking my dog from Kealia to Kapa'a, and was passing every car as I leisurely walked .

Traffic gets worse every year as more drivers become of age and with people living longer than ever makes for a lot of cars on very few roads. How much longer before there is traffic like this everyday? How long can we endure the stresses traffic moving at a snails pace?
Everyday car dealerships sell more and more cars, pick-up trucks and SUVs, where will all these  vehicles go?  It's crazy when it can take less time to walk from Kapa'a to Wailu'a than it does to drive.
I  have dreams that in the very near future we will no longer need  motor vehicles, we will just log onto our computers, connect  ourselves to  a special device that breaks down our molecules and sends us instantly anywhere we want to go.  These devices would be true smart meters.
In the mean time, riding the bus, walking or bicycling will help render this situation ,however  there is no question we need more roads, we need more trails and those in denial are just that, in denial...
Editor's note, Dakinetalk guest bloggers do not necessarily represent the opinions of dakinetalk. Guest bloggers are given space to express their beliefs and or opinions. We feel there are many roads and like to give people space to express their thoughts,after-all that's what dakine is...Aloha, James "Kimo" Rosen, Publisher

"Shalom Rabbi: @>----

I reference to your excellent "Bumper to bumper nightmare" ....here is my letter to both Star Bulletin & Advertiser in May 18 2007,Not published because the papers favor RAIL for Honolulu ,this problem is universal & can be applied world wide. I try to squeeze it in Face book but unsuccessful :-(

Letter to the Editor:
Honolulu Star Bulletin

"For gridlock & inconvenience in driving on Hawaii's roads, this is not only the problem for senior drivers but for All drivers, this is 2007 & not 1907,Honolulu or Oahu imports people & autos daily with our limited space ,where will you drive & where will you park ? for every car on the island needs 3 parking spaces daily, home ,office, shopping plus the over crowded streets to get to the 3 parking spaces !!! added rail will not solve the problems, where will you park to get on rail, what if there is a labor strike ? problems are numerous,no perfect solution but we can lessen the pains on the road, what we needed are 21st century thinkings to resolve a 21st century problems , if we can resolve these traffic problem today,I and many others would gladly give up driving private cars YESTERDAY without sacrificing our freedom to travel !!!

Facts: Besides the initial cost of an automobile with maintenance, gas ,parking, insurance & upkeep would amount to several thousand dollars a year with the car in the parking position most of the time. Will you spend this much on public transportation if the system is efficient without all the headache, aggravation, parking & gridlock on the road ?

PROPOSED SOLUTIONS : MAKE TRANSPORTATION FRIENDLY FOR ALL RIDERS ,LET PRIVATE ENTERPRISE FLOURISH WITHOUT ADDED TAX DOLLARS , GOVERNMENT TO MAKE AND ENFORCE LAWS TO PROTECT DRIVERS & RIDERS BY FLOODING THE ISLANDS WITH A SEA OF PRIVATE TAXIS & MINI-TAXIS (Encourage hybrid autos to save gas & help the eco system) MAKE LAWS THAT ONE CAN FLAG DOWN A TAXI 24 HOURS A DAY ANYWHERE THAT IS SAFE. DETAIL TO BE WORKED OUT ON PROFIT & RIDER SAFETY LIKE LICENSING UNIFORMED DRIVERS WITH ZERO TOLERANCE ON CRIMINAL BACK GROUND & ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAM LIKE AIRLINE PILOTS FOR TAXI DRIVERS ,LOOK AT THE PARKING SPACES & STREET USE THAT CAN BE SAVED TO KEEP PRIVATE AUTOS OFF THE ROAD VOLUNTARILY ,THIS WOULD CREATE MANY PRIVATE NEW JOBS FOR ENTREPRENEURS , RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT WOULD WELCOME THIS WITHOUT THE ADDED EXPENSES OF ADDING EXPENSIVE PARKING SPACES !!!. TRY IT !!!"
