"Nobody is going to live forever..." 'Kimo's World #69' (Please tell us your views on burial?)

James "Kimo" Rosen is a retired Professional photographer

Kimo's World #69

Nobody is going to live forever

Nobody is going to live forever. Our days are numbered here on earth. It doesn't matter if your 15, 30, 50 or 80, nobody is guaranteed tomorrow. There is no doubt that one hundred years from now, nobody reading this will still be alive, unless of course there are major medical breakthroughs.

I am approaching the Big 6-0 and constantly thinking of how I want to be laid to rest. My religion of Judaism believes in burial since the body will someday resurrect when the Messiah finally comes. The Dilemma is, I do not like the idea of my body deteriorating with bugs eating me through a wooden casket. Orthodox Christians believe similar in that the body should not be cremated.
Rosen at his portrait studio in
Homer, Alaska 1984...

Intellectually cremations seems like the perfect way to leave this earth. You are not taking up expensive real estate that will become scarcer and scarcer each year. You will not pollute the land with expensive coffins. Coffins are very expensive on top of that the morticians put gallons of embalming fluid, and tons of metal and exotic hardwoods from coffins into the ground.

Throughout the United States there is increasing interest in natural burial as a way to honor lives that have been lived with care for the planet.

Natural burial, also known as "green burial," was the standard practice in our country until the Civil War, when it became common to preserve the bodies of fallen soldiers in order to make the long trip home by train from the battlefields. Since that time, natural burial has continued to be quietly practiced in the United States by members of Jewish, Muslim and some Christian faith communities.

There are all kinds of funerals and services for the departed. The concept of celebrating the person's life and having a party verses a traditional funeral has become very acceptable.

Religion can dictate whether you are buried  or cremated. My friends in Alaska  burnt on a stake their departed friend per his request.   There are also wartime burials at sea.

I believe the Hawaiian Paddle out is the most romantic way to go, religion aside. The Hawaiian paddle out has my endorsement and is the way I wish to go. A beautiful ceremony where friends and family paddle your remains out to sea. When all the canoes and kayaks are gathered a touching ceremony of spreading the ashes along with flowers and leis  is so touching that I every time I witness one of these I get chicken skin.

I am not concerned with man made rules of religion. I am more concerned with a personal relationship with the Lord my God.

There are other creative solutions for what to do with your body after death. You can donate it to science where it can be used for research or for the instruction of medical students. Perhaps best is to become an organ donor. That way your body lives on, or at least, parts of it do!

KimoRosen said...

Harmony, one could be an organ donor and also be cremated for a Hawaiian paddle out burial! Older folks organs usually aren't desirable for transplants...

I'm donating my body via Medcure Whole Body Donation program. They pay for everything! They even pay for cremation of your remains after science is done with you & ships it to whoever might want it. It's one of the few programs I've found that make donating your body to science easy & completely cost-free.

-Wow, with the costs of funerals that's a great way to go, not only financially but for the good of humanity. Do you have a website on Medcure? Ok, I will Google it!

Loved it. If you get 'buried' at sea the fish gonna eat you. My husband asked to be cremated because he 'hated' his body. He died of a terrible form of cancer. Long story. I will be cremated. I mean, so many Christians have sent me to hell I figure if I'm nothing but ashes there won't be nobody to burn forever. Ha Ha. Hey, Kimo, it's Bettejo...

Great subject,we think alike.... should remind people from time to time to be prepared for the life after, live everyday to the fullest but prepare in advance & in writing.I did this when I was in uncle Sam's service & prepared everything for my next of kin because I never know what the next day will bring & continued to this day & try to make it easy for my Executors with updates on my Will & Revocable living Trust ,all funeral plans are prepaid ,I want my Executors to enjoy more times at Waikiki beach rather then wrapped up with paper work after I am gone,no regrets ,it has been a great ride ,from a penniless youth to a penniless senior citizen. but all people must prepared in advance...n'est-ce pas ? :-D

I am for cremation, why waste a piece of land where one can plant food for the living ? I can't stand myself rotting in a enclosed box with out Matzo goodies & sweet grape wine..

MedCure sounds logical...problem is, they would take one look at me and laugh.

Sam Uel Clemens said...

, no Grazer they wouldn't! Although I fear they might prop you up in a glass display so medical students can just stand in awe over your perfection.

Grazer said...

Haha...or with a sign that sez: "Don't let this happen to YOU!"

Sam Uel Clemens said...

Nah, that would be the sign in front of my display case, Grazer!

I called Med Cure, here's what I found out; I asked them why is your nose in the middle of your face?
(Because it is the scenter!) also asked them,Why can't a nose be 12 inches long?
(Because then it would be a foot!)

LOL! For a moment I thought you were serious! You are too funny!

Damn, I was hoping to start being someone else. Or someone else's dildo, anyway.

Rather than any form of burial, or even cremation, I’m more into the ultimate recycling....
1. Any organ or part that can be donated to another person in need is the only sure way of absolutely guaranteeing that my life continues after my death.

2. Anything that can’t be donated to a person can be donated for scientific research.

3. Anything left over that absolutely can’t be used for either donation or research can be cremated, with the ashes scattered over a favorite bird-watching site.

I can’t imagine my remains being thrown away like so much human leftover trash, no matter how glorified and well-manicured the “landfill” may be.

Sam Uel Clemens said...

Douglas, that's essentially what the MedCure full body donation program is about. I look forward to helping scientific research!

Douglass Dunn said...

Yes, Sam, I went to the link you provided and bookmarked it. Sounds like a viable resource for achieving my objective that I can also share with others — thank you for sharing it!

I love when things like this happen on a blog! I Everthings a learning experience! I too book marked Med Cure, but not the other post about where to put ashes!

Sam Uel Clemens said...

Yay! Maybe we will all find ourselves "meeting" each other again after death! (NOT in a dildo, but perhaps on gurneys at a medical school. )
