"Swimming in uncharted waters..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspirational Monday)

Judith Whitehead is back guest-blogging on this Inspirational Monday about  swimming in uncharted waters  and reflections on the past... Judith lives in Amherst N.Y. has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for almost 30 years...

Swimming in uncharted waters...

I suddenly find myself swimming in uncharted waters; recently my son decided to ask his girlfriend to marry him and I am filled with happiness and a whirlwind of emotions all at once. I have imagined many times that some day my sons would find their soul mates and start a family of their own but never thought I would experience such a plethora of feelings that I do these days.

Daily I find myself reflecting on the past; re living my sons’ childhood memories as he grew up to a be a young man. If only I could turn back the clock to family vacations, baseball leagues, school choirs we enjoyed watching so much, birthday parties, first steps, first dates, and so many wonderful memories that have slipped away. As we raise our children we always want them to someday be independent, responsible adults but it seems that those years have slipped by so quickly. How did my son grow so much older and taller? How did I get so old? And why is letting go so difficult? I have done my job, I have raised my son to be an independent, contributing young person and now a new chapter will start in our lives; he will be starting a new family with new memories to look back on. I can only hope and pray that he will enjoy his new independent life with his new fiancĂ© as much as I did with my husband.

"Should we be pissed..?" 'Obama Da Dog'

"Imagine all the world living life in Peace...!" The question remains, should we pissed at this act of urinating on the dead enemy?
We train our men in the military to kill, we train them to be animals but then when they urinate on a dead  enemy they could be court marshaled?

Should we be pissed at this act of urinating on the dead enemy?

I believe the recent act of 4  U.S. marines urinating on dead Afghan soldiers, most likely Taliban is not a class act.

Now imagine you are under the stresses of death and dying and  testosterone is running high in a country where there is not many ways to release one's stresses,  on top of that  you are a 20 year  male  trained to kill. Now the country that trained you to kill warrants to court marshal  you  and hand down  prison time for urinating on the dead enemy.

I do not condone this act, and feel it is a classless act however in time of war how can we say it's OK to blow another's brains out but you could face jail time for peeing on them? Remember this enemy straps bombs to their bodies and kills men woman, and innocent children without remorse.

Our politicians need to quit worrying about the  public relations of war and just get out of the war business  altogether.

"The courage of Captain Ed Freeman..." 'Marvin Gross' (verified true on snopes)

"Captain Ed Freeman a true American hero, G-d bless and rest in peace Captain!"
Mahalo Nui Loa to Marvin Gross as the source  for this most important bit of American history!
Courage. You're a 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded and dying in the jungle somewhere in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam . It's November 11, 1967. LZ (landing zone) X-ray. Your unit is outnumbered 8-1 and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 yards away, that your CO (commanding officer) has ordered the Medevac helicopters to stop coming in.
You're lying there, listening to the enemy ma...chine guns and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world, 12,000 miles away, and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.
Then - over the machine gun noise - you faintly hear that sound of a helicopter. You look up to see a Huey coming in. But ... It doesn't seem real because no MedEvac markings are on it. Captain Ed Freeman is coming in for you. He's not MedEvac so it's not his job, but he heard the radio call and decided he's flying hi...s Huey down into the machine gun fire anyway.
Even after the MedEvacs were ordered not to come. He's coming anyway. And he drops it in and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 3 of you at a time on board. Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire to the doctors and nurses and safety. And, he kept coming back!! 13 more times!!
Until all the wounded were out. No one knew until the mission was over that the Captain had been hit 4 times in the legs and left arm. He took 29 of you and your buddies out that day. Some would not have made it without the Captain and his Huey. Medal of Honor Recipient, Captain Ed Freeman, United States Air Force, ... died last Wednesday at the age of 70, in Boise, Idaho .
I bet you didn't hear about this hero's passing, but we've sure seen and heard a whole bunch about Michael Jackson, Tiger Woods, Congress and the crap they're pulling and of course Obama and his administration's BS!!! Medal of Honor Winner Captain Ed Freeman. Shame on the American media !!! Now ... YOU pass this along. Honor this real American. Please.

ALOHA FRIDAY
January 13, 2012

It's Aloha Friday The 13th!!!

SIT OR STAND? IT DEPENDS.

Aloha folks. Now, for some of you, this might be a little indelicate subject this week. So, maybe better you turn away. But, for the rest of you, good fun.

Basically humans have two functions to perform in the bathroom. And the toilet they use generally has a lid that can be put up, or down to accommodate each separate function. Over the years the idea has grown that men should put the lid up when performing function number one. And that women should put the lid down when performing both function number one and function number two. Ah, would that that were so.

There's a lot of men out there, judging by the number of complaints from women, who don't bother putting the lid up when going number one. This results in a wet toilet seat from splash-over. There are also a number of men who do put the seat up, but then neglect to put it back down. Again, this observation is based on a large number of complaints from women who fall in sometime when the bathroom lighting is bad.

There have been some innovative toilet seats on the market over the past few years. Ones that you only have to step on a floor pedal to raise. Ones that lower themselves automatically after the toilet is flushed. Attempts they may be; solutions they are not.

For women who do not want to sit on a wet toilet seat there is a solution. It's for sale thru travel and camping outlet stores. It's a plastic funnel, easily carried in pocket or purse and easily cleaned after each use. It allows a woman, just like a man, to stand when performing function number one. And there are, probably, those who would advocate for all humans performing function number one while standing, and function number two while sitting.

Ah, but there's still a problem. As men get older they find it more and more difficult to perform function number one in a timely manner. Many an older man has wandered into the bathroom in the middle of the night and found himself standing in front of the toilet, and standing, and standing. Perhaps even at times falling asleep while standing only to wake and wonder where he is and why he's there.

Sadly, I was becoming one of those men . . . when I suddenly discovered the secret. I learned to sit down for function number one. No more accidents on the floor. No long periods of standing and sometimes losing my balance from the prolonged wait.

So, for younger men and women (up to possibly their mid-fifties) I suggest that standing for number one works well (as long as they both lift the toilet seat lid. But, for older men, and women, I believe that sitting down for both functions, one and two, is preferable. It's easier on older bodies. And, should a man forget what he's there for and proceed with function number two rather than number one, at least there won't be a terrible mess on the floor to clean up.
Bodily functions. What would we do for amusement without them.
Okay folks, see you next week.

"So you thought you had a modern day TV?..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen

So you thought you had a modern day TV? Technology is going rampant and what was state of the art yesterday will soon be a dinosaur...Costco Kaua'i is now selling Sony flat screen HD 32' TVs without wifi  for $289.00. One year ago the same TV was around $800.00.

So you thought you had a modern day TV? Technology is going rampant and what was state of the art yesterday will soon be a dinosaur...

Technology is back, just a few years back most people, hotels, motels, restaurants and bars sold their old TV sets in favor of the new flat screen HD technology.
The flat screen technology is still with us with a few additions that everyone will soon be addicted too, just like they are to their cell phones and computers. The new TVs are built more like computers, the major difference in the TVs is in built-in wifi, allowing Internet access on your TV without any cables.

Along with the new TVs, Netflix a once financially struggling corporation is now one of the best stocks on the interchange.  Netflix has actually bought into most television manufacturers channel controls, you now have netflix listed as a channel on most remote controls.

It is now possible to have your own personal video library with over 30,000 movies and TV shows streamlined to your television for the low monthly price of $7.99.

The future is bright for Netflix and not so bright for the cable companies, but as far as your HDTV goes, it's time once again to buy a new one, that is until next year when you will need to buy yet another TV with features not yet thought of.  Did someone say built in web-cams, virtual 3-D and smellovision (sic)?

"Enjoy your life like the Mexican fishermen..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau'

Chester Lau, aka "Unc" was  one of two cinematographer in the US Army who  filmed the 1952 summer Olympics in Helsinki,Finland for the military. He has walked amongst 40,000  on the Nude beach at Cape D'agde in the French Riviera in  1996 &1997 , and was one of  Jack Lords favorite crew members and camera-man on the original Hawaii Five O. "Unc" currently is retired on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. We see both sides of Unc today,  the serious and the not so serious, enjoy...

As Lao Tzu said "  You are a rich man when you know what is enough" Enjoy your life like the Mexican fishermen.
Interesting perspective……Life Explained
A boat docked in a tiny Mexican fishing village.

A tourist complimented the local fishermen on the quality of their fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

"Not very long." they answered in unison.

"Why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?"

The fishermen explained that their small catches were sufficient to meet their needs and those of their families.

"But what do you do with the rest of your time?"

"We sleep late, fish a little, play with our children, and take siestas with our wives.  In the evenings, we go into the village to see our friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs.

We have a full life."

The tourist interrupted,

"I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you  !!! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."

"And after that?"

"With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers.
Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant.

You can then leave this little village and move to  Mexico City , Los Angeles ,  New York City  or even Kauai in the Hawaiian islands !  From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."

"How long would that take?"

"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years." replied the tourist.

"And after that?"

"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting, " answered the tourist, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!"

"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the fishermen.

"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife
and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."

“That’s what I am doing now” Replied the fisherman
And the moral of this story is:          ........ Know where you're going in life.... you may already be there !
Master Sergeant Chester Lau as a young proud man serving his country!

Local Kaua'i Politics..." James "Kimo" Rosen

Kaua'i is eye candy to ones eyes,  however with only one major  road to get around an island of over 60,000 is somewhat of a nebulous scenario..."  Even if you are not a resident this could effect you if you ever visit our cosmic hamlet, so read on..."

This blog  also appeared ironically this same day 01-09-12 in the Kauai Garden Island news as an opinion article titled, "More roads and trails..."
http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-monday-january/article_92d9012a-3a96-11e1-a4bc-001871e3ce6c.html
Mr. Micken's recent  Letter to the editor"Solving Kauai's transportation woes," is half right. http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-friday-january/article_4df33118-3841-11e1-ae66-0019bb2963f4.html
Mr. Mickens states,"Get those cane haul roads open starting with the long-time controversial “emergency” road from the Wailua River to the Hanama‘ulu turn off. The “temporary” Kapa‘a bypass road is a shinning example of a successful operation put in place years ago."
I am in total agreement that our cosmic hamlet needs more roads. One major road from one end of the island to the other is somewhat nebulous. More roads means less traffic, less stress, and options during emergencies.
On the other hand I am in total dis-agreement on Glen's assumption that 95% of the island population feels the pedestrian trail is being shoved down it's throat, in actuality it is the best use of taxpayer I have ever witnessed on Kauai.
I know many people who bike , walk and bus as their primary means of transportation, myself included in this mix.
My question to Mr. Mickens, why can't we have both, why one without the other as you seem to debate ?More roads and more trails. Who say's we can't have our poi and eat it too.
