Gluten Smuten...

What the hay is gluten and why  are so many afraid of it? All you hear lately is gluten free and  how you will live forever by becoming gluten free, or something like that.

I went to a restaurant and they raved about gluten free tacos. I told them I like gluten and wanted gluten added to my tortilla. They looked at me like I was from outer space.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Gluten also shows up in many whole grain foods related to wheat, including bulgur, spelt, farro, kamut, and triticale.

For a small number of  people approximately 1% of the population  gluten can be a matter of life or death. These people contain a condition known as celiac disease. For a good many of the remaining  99% of the population there seems to be an anti-gluten fad happening. Many swear by it and others call it a health nut hoax.

Living gluten-free may make you fat.  There are some people who go off gluten  as a means to lose weight and  end up gaining weight instead. That's because they consume gluten-free packaged products that are often just as high in saturated fat, sugar and sodium as other junk food.

Jimmy Kimmel on his late night talk show did a segment on  the streets of L.A. asking people who were on gluten free diets, what is gluten? The results were alarming yet hilarious, not one person could tell him what gluten was. Kimmel said it best;
"Some people can't eat gluten for medical reasons, but a lot of people in Los Angeles don't eat gluten because someone in their yoga class told them not to."

Therefore if your a hipster or anti, it's the new cool to be gluten free.  I like the word free, but not when applied to gluten.

Now here's the real clincher. After spending many hours researching gluten, I still have no idea what the hell it is? all I can say  is Gluten Smuten.

"It’s time for holiday magic... 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Sunday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York and has worked in
the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years.
It’s time for holiday magic

It is once again that magical time of the year when we celebrate all the holidays that bring family and friends together. This year according to the Jewish calendar, Chanukah will be celebrated in mid December, every year it’s a different date. It’s a great time to remember fond times of the past between family and friends . Back when we were little or even when we were raising our family,  times were so much simpler. No Cyber shopping, Internet surfing and stores that open actually on a holiday. It was unheard of and unnecessary. Holidays such as Christmas and Chanukah have become so“Americanized” that the gift and lists are all consuming these days.

What happened to looking forward to visiting with family and friends being the priority and not just who procured the best bargain gift on Cyber Monday. Our family always gave us a gift to share and then a few smaller gifts; today families are given a list to fill as if the parents were Santa themselves. What happens to the families that can’t afford those large expected gifts and literally get into debt to please those people? They pay for those extravagant gifts the rest of the year and maybe into next year. We have forgotten that the thought of being remembered , is the greatest gift of all. If anyone has spent any time with the homeless they would realize that.

Looking in on someone that is shut in or unable to leave their residence is a gift that will last for several days. Donating clothing, food or just spending time with the needy are great gifts in themselves. This is the time to teach young children what the meaning of holidays really are. We as small children never got showered with gifts on the holiday; even though my parents lived comfortably, there were more important ways to show love and caring. Even today I love to receive a home made gift from someone and better yet, I love to make scarves for people as well.

So, take some time to unwind during this season, think of how you can please others without spending a lot of money on a large expensive gift. The feeling of giving of yourselves will long outlast the bobble that someone bestows upon you. My hat goes off to all our volunteers who selflessly do those good deeds all year long such as helping out in shelters, food pantries and the many ways to care for the less fortunate. If it weren't for them, many people would literally be unable to survive especially in Buffalo with our brutal winters. It truly beings home the saying, “it is better to give than receive.”

WE must dig down deep and find ways to help our less fortunate; clean out those closets of the clothing you have long forgot about. Someone out there can benefit from your donations, volunteer to help out at food pantries, shelters and food drives. Spend a little more time visiting with our seniors and shut ins, and visit our friends and family living in nursing homes. Each day in their lives are all the same; I am amazed at how little some nursing home people get visitors; I see my dad just about every day and can’t
believe how I never see others getting a visitor from family or friends.

Spend some time focusing on someone else, it will come back to you twofold by paying it forward. Enjoy the Holiday season and make it a point to give of yourselves.

The Garden Island News can please some of the people...

I would like to  comment on Kelly Sheffield's recent letter to the editor  in the Garden Island news criticizing editor-n-chief Bill Buley's  recent article on the "Beer mile." She calls it irresponsible  because people on the island have alcohol problems?
http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-friday-december/article_d88fba02-81c8-11e4-b320-774b7a58f8ab.html ( Kelly Sheffield letter,"Coverage of beer mile was irresponsible.")

People on the island have obesity problems too, does that mean we should not have articles on food?
http://thegardenisland.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/beers-mile/article_ab8abae4-8032-11e4-8145-8f66c8318d3e.html  (4 beers, 1 mile)

Bill Buley has a done great job as editor of the Garden Island newspaper since arriving almost 2 years ago. I watch the paper like a hawk and have noticed a great many more advertisers  and many new voices. The forum page has featured many new names, not the same old same old, although I miss being frequently published.  Bill likes giving everyone a voice in the paper.  So send your thoughts to TGI!

Bill and I don't always to eye to eye. The recent Monk seal issue coverage was a little too much for me with 4 front page articles about it in a weeks time. Although I did not care for it, many others did.

In the case of the beer mile it was newsworthy and not something everyone would choose to do. it was all done in  fun. Bill  exemplified that in his fine writing and extraordinaire photo skills.

The old expression from poet John Lydgate, same name as Kauai's John Lydgate and used by President Lincoln also applies to the Garden Island News.

“You can please some of the people all of the time, you can please all of the people some of the time, but you can’t please all of the people all of the time”

TGI does not please me all of the time, just some of the time, that's enough for me.

"ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND..." 'Obama Da Dog (source)

Obama Da Dog  was born and raised on the island of Kaua'i.
She can be seen around Kapa'a  town with her best friend, James "Kimo" Rosen.

ADVICE FROM A RETIRED HUSBAND

It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When you notice this, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an oversensitive woman.

My name is John. Let me relate how I handled the situation with my wife. When I retired a few years ago, it became necessary for Patricia to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed.
Shortly after she started working, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work.

Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her.. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table. I generally have lunch in the Men's Grill at the club, so eating out is unreasonable. I'm ready for some home-cooked grub when I hit that door.

She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating. But now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner. I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed.

Another symptom of aging is complaining, I think. For example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour. But, Boys, we take 'em for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch completely now and then wouldn't hurt her any (if you know what I mean) I like to think tact is one of my strong points.

When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the lawn try not to make a scene. I'm a fair man.. I tell her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed lemonade and just sit for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she may as well make one for me, too.

I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support my wife. I'm not saying that showing this much consideration is easy. Many men will find it difficult. Some will find it impossible! Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older.

However, Guys, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your aging wife because of this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.

EDITOR'S NOTE:
John, died suddenly on January 31 of a perforated rectum. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50-inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing, and a sledge hammer laying nearby. His wife was arrested and charged with murder. The all-woman jury took only 10 minutes to find her Not Guilty, accepting her defense that John, somehow without looking, accidentally sat down on his golf club.

"Breaking News, Monk Seals and Humans" (Kimo's world #47)

James “Kimo” Rosen is a retired professional photographer
living in Kapa'a with his best friend Obama Da Dog,
Rosen also blogs as a hobby...

The enclosed blog is an opinion article I recently sent to the local newspaper, (The Garden Island News) aka (TGI)

Kimo's world #47

Breaking News, Monk Seals and Humans

Dear Editor,

I enjoy reading your paper daily and am thrilled that you brought back the Saturday print edition.

With that said,I do not understand why TGI  on Sunday December 7,2014 would publish  as the lead story on the front page of the print edition yet  another article on the death of a female Monk seal?
http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/and-growing/article_4882bed4-7dd9-11e4-9364-8bc683a92d0e.html  ($25,000 — and growing)

There have already been 4 front page articles including Sunday's and a few  editorials in the last week on this female endangered  monk seal. Wednesday  featured the story, Thursday, Friday and Sunday featured reward money and the repetitive story.

http://thegardenisland.com/news/local/tgi-offers-reward-for-seal-killer/article_de9d7bc8-7c1e-11e4-83c1-a3e0545584f3.html   (TGI offers $10,000 reward for seal killer)

There was a breaking news story from the previous day Saturday December 6,2014 of a major traffic fatality that  took the life of  a man and  closed Kaumualli highway for approximately 3 hours. Causing many hardships, missed appointments, missed air flights , doctors appointments, the list goes on.

Nowhere on the front page of the print edition was there even a box ad at the bottom of the page giving readers a lead of where to go to find this story, instead it was buried inside on page  A-6.

I understand  the death of an endangered species monk seal is major news in Hawai'i, however when a fellow human dies in traffic fatality that should trump a repetitive story of a dead monk seal as the front page headline.

I freelanced for many years  as a photojournalist and kept a police scanner in my portrait studio. Whenever I would call any editor advising  them I photographed an accident and asked if they were interested in the photos, the first thing they would ask, "were there any fatalities?" If I said no, they were not interested, if i said yes, I had the front page.

Oh, how journalism has changed.
