"Social media has changed our lives..." 'Judith Whitehead' (inspiration Friday)

Social media has changed our lives

Many years ago when I was growing up in a very different time and place, we had something called a phone booth on almost every corner. My mom always reminded me when I went out to make sure I had a dime with me just in case I had to make an emergency call.

The times progressed, phone calls escalated to 25 cents and there became less and less phone booths. It was the 1960's and there were no ATM machines or cell phones to either get money or call people with immediate gratification. You had better not leave the house without “cash” money just in case. I think in many ways it made teenagers growing up more responsible. You were made to think “ahead” , or you may be stranded or hungry depending on whatever your plans were.

Driving my boys to school one day in the 1990's some people did have phones in their cars, they were large and clumsy. When our car broke down in an intersection, a friend driving a special vehicle had a cell phone as he called it for us to use for emergency use. A large ariel anchored on his trunk made it possible for transmission.

Today our thoughts are posted and known instantly on a Facebook posting or a “tweet”. Many times if we had taken little time to contemplate what we were thinking at that time, it may have been better to “sleep on it” before making public what we thought . Sometimes less is more in those cases.

I must admit, I have bought into the Facebook world and find myself checking on my phone through out the day to see what friends and family are up to. Now a days you don't skip a beat on the latest news. World news, weather reports and events are immediately accessible and you can even skip the nightly news if need be; it was all laid out on public media on the web earlier in the day.

Are we better off for having such technology at our fingertips?

Families seem to spend less time actually “talking” to each other. We eat our meals out a few times a week and have noticed that children are using electronics to entertain themselves or messaging their fiends at that time, instead of facing each other to converse about their days.

Yes we are socially more connected but spend less time actually talking to our friends and family; we
send a quick text to save time to get our thoughts out there.

Meetings and greetings are made sending an Instagram without even speaking a word.

Party invites and congratulations no longer have to go through the mail service in the form of a
card with a stamp. It no wonder that the mail service continues to raise the prices of packages and
stamps--their circulation has dwindled over the years.

I for one still enjoy opening up a greeting card but notice I do get less each year in replacement of a quick message over the internet.

Our younger generation will no longer know the pleasure of sitting down and writing a letter to a friend across the country. When my husband and I dated on two different coasts, we used to write letters. Phone calls were more expensive then and were used in limited time increments. Today our thoughts and actions are sent and received with immediate gratification. It has changed our lives; don't know if for the better or not. It has taught our current generation that things can be taken care of instantly and I fear we have grown an impatient group of young people who have learned to want things done NOW.

A Rich Arab in a bar

A rich Arab walks into a bar and is about to order a drink when he sees a guy close by wearing a Jewish yarmulkes , a prayer shawl and traditional locks of hair.

He doesn't have to be Einstein to know this guy is Jewish. So he shouts over to the bartender so loudly that everyone can hear: "Drinks for everyone in here, bartender, but not for the Jew over there."

Soon after the drinks have been handed out, the Jew gives him a big smile, waves at him, then says, "Thank you" in an equally loud voice. This infuriates the Arab.

He once again loudly orders drinks for everyone except the Jew.
As before, this does not seem to bother the Jewish guy. He continues to smile, and again yells, "Thank you."

The Arab asks the bartender, "What's the matter with that Jew? I've ordered two rounds of drinks for everyone in the bar but him, and all he does is smile and thank me."

The bartender replies, "He owns the place."

The story of Yankel the Baker

In Crown Heights, there was a Jew, Yankel, who owned a bakery. He survived the camps. He once said, “You know why it is that I’m alive today? I was a kid, just a teenager at the time. We were on the train, in a boxcar, being taken to Auschwitz. Night came and it was freezing, deathly cold, in that boxcar.

The Germans would leave the cars on the side of the tracks overnight, sometimes for days on end without any food, and of course, no blankets to keep us warm,” he said. “Sitting next to me was an older Jew – this beloved elderly Jew - from my hometown I recognized, but I had never seen him like this. He was shivering from head to toe, and looked terrible. So I wrapped my arms around him and began rubbing him, to warm him up. I rubbed his arms, his legs, his face, his neck. I begged him to hang on. All night long; I kept the man warm this way. I was tired, I was freezing cold myself, my fingers were numb, but I didn’t stop rubbing the heat on to this man’s body. Hours and hours went by this way. Finally, night passed, morning came, and the sun began to shine. There was some warmth in the cabin, and then I looked around the car to see some of the other Jews in the car. To my horror, all I could see were frozen bodies, and all I could hear was a deathly silence.

Nobody else in that cabin made it through the night – they died from the frost. Only two people survived: the old man and me… The old man survived because somebody kept him
warm; I survived because I was warming somebody else…”

Let me tell you the secret of Judaism. When you warm other people’s hearts, you remain warm yourself. When you seek to support, encourage and inspire others; then you discover support, encouragement and inspiration in your own life as well. That, my friends, is “Judaism 101”.

"Obama should be on Mt. Rushmore..!" 'Glenn Mickens' (Kauai county watchdog)

Glenn Mickens has lived on Kauai  with his wife Ruth for the last 26 years. Born July 26, 1930 in Wilmar, California, USA) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched in four games (two of which were starts) for the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played for five years in Japan, from 1959 until 1963 for the Kintetsu Buffaloes. There, he compiled a record of 45–53 with a 2.54 ERA.  Glenn also  served in the Army for 2 years and coached baseball at UCLA for 25 years.
Last but not least Glenn would really like to see Kaua'i give the county manager style of Government a chance.

political watchdogs
and Nitpickers...
Mahalos Glenn!
Obama should be on Mt. Rushmore

Very soon our 44th President of the United States will leave office and he will leave as one of the most popular Presidents we have ever had.

Consider that against all odds he was the first African American in history to serve 8 years as the leader of the most powerful nation on earth. What this brilliant man accomplished in 8 years would have probably made him eligible for a space on Mt Rushmore with our other greats if he had been white!

But to have accomplished what he did with his opposition trying to block every move he made, not only because
of his policies, BUT because he was black was miraculous.

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball and I was privileged and thrilled to have played with him. I saw how he had to be not only a great, talented ball player but who had to be someone who could tolerate being called every racist name in the books and without reciprocating. The legendary Branch Rickey not only found a person with these qualifications,  he found someone who went far beyond all expectations. As a sign of the respect and admiration future generations of ball players had for Jackie, his number 42 has been retired and on a day to honor him every team and player who plays against the Dodgers wears number 42--never done before and will probably never be done again.

And today I would hope that every citizen in the U.S. white, black, brown or yellow could, without prejudice find it within themselves to appreciate and honor Barack Obama for what he has done for his country.

Again, against all odds (the race card always being an underlying factor that no other President had to tolerate) this man got us out of the worst depression since 1929; the stock market climbed from 11,000 in 2008 to just under 20,000 today; unemployment dropped from over 10% to 4.6% today; Obama promised that he would bring our troops home from the Iraq war and kept that promise; he got health care passed and though it is not perfect 20 million more people have health insurance today than ever had it before which no other president accomplished; he went after and killed the number 1 criminal in the world, Osama Bin Laden; he saved our auto industry and the thousands of jobs that went with it; he put regulations in place to prohibit the crash of 2008 with the loss of homes and life savings; and his diplomacy with Iran has given us inspection rights to their atomic bomb activities.

And with all our problems and the turmoil in the rest of the world this country is still the best place on earth to live in and Barack Obama can leave office proud that he had a hand in making it what it is.

Mr Trump now has the torch and his tenure will be judged on what happens in the next 4 years.

Bet you thought I was going to blog about Trump

Let me start by saying this blog is not about Donald Trump.

However because I mentioned Donald Trump this blog will come up in a Google search  for Donald Trump making it get more hits than a normal blog. Therefore  we will continue this blog without mention of the President elect in hopes this blog will do well even though it's not about Trump.   For the record every blog of mine about Donald Trump gets double the amount of views as a typical normal dakinetalk blog.

Let's talk about the weather? Let's talk about going to the beach?  Let's talk about shopping?
Lets talk about senior discounts?  Let's talk about making pizza's?   Let's talk about Food trucks?   Let's talk about traffic?   Let's talk about tourism?
Let's talk  about your Facebook page and what you ate for lunch?    OK, I got it? Let's talk about Nude  beaches in Hawaii!    OK, I think I found a subject that may Trump the Donald!

Looks like Nude beaches may Trump the Donald?  On second thought guess who just won that Google search?

"Rekindling old friendships..." 'Judith Whitehead' (inspiration Friday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York
( A suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.)
and has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for nearly 40 years

Rekindling old friendships

Rekindling old friendships can bring comfort and happiness.

Now that I have my Mondays'off from work, I have a little more time to relax and reflect. I have been used to working 5 days a week for many years and although I cram 40 hours into four days, it makes a huge difference. No longer do I dread Sunday because I know another “Sunday” is coming
tomorrow.

It seems as we age we reflect more and more on the past and remember those we spent time with growing up. We seem to table those relationships as we grow, get married, start families and focus on the immediate. Now after our families have grown and our nests becomes empty, we have the time to
reflect on our lives when they were more simple as we were growing up.

I have reconnected with a few of my childhood friends recently and find it not only relaxing to reflect on the past but glean comfort in talking about the “good ole days” and how simple those times really were. At the time spent when we were teenagers, we had the weight of the world on our shoulders; little did we know that life was so simple then. We all know how our lives pass before our eyes so quickly doing our daily routines that we have little time to reflect on the past as we grow from children to adults.

Many years ago I reconnected, actually through Facebook, with a friend from high school that I had not seen in years who had moved to Florida. She derived much happiness in talking about those simple times that we enjoyed as teenagers as she had become quite sick and let me know how she cherished those talks we had before she passed away a few years ago.

We seem to table those relationships as we pull away from our core families and start new families of our own while becoming anxious to start new memories.

As our lives become more quiet and retrospective, we seem to turn to the past to relive memories when times were simple and unencumbered with responsibilities. Now with the help of the internet and advancing technology, it becomes possible to search out old friends that have disappeared from our lives and to rekindle old friendships.

Time seems to be a great equalizer and those people we found in high school to be with the “in crowd” are now all the same in the real world and status falls by the wayside as reality sets in.

As we venture on with our lives, after we have finished school, we have open opportunity set before us for the taking. I have been to a few high school reunions, and find it amazing what people have done or not done with their lives. Many had circumstances that dictated the direction in which their lives had gone and others passed up many opportunities with having fear of the unknown.

We become our worst enemies and become reticent to take a chance. We all make mistakes along the way but soon realize if we are lucky enough to have a second chance, we can always start over. If we
have our health in tact, there is usually a way.

I now make an effort at least a few times a month to meet up and rekindle friendships with those I have not seen in years. It is an enjoyable way to spend a few hours away from the everyday turmoil of life and to reminisce about the past. The time flies by as we laugh and talk and I have found great
comfort in those hours. I recommend it highly to those that can; take a breather, take some time and make the time to break away from the present. You will walk away with a feeling of contentment and happiness that will keep you smiling for at least little while.

Donald and Hillary's First Date

Donnie Dumper went into the audience in his TV special to find the most embarrassing first date that a woman ever had. The winner described her worst first date experience. There was absolutely no question as to why her tale took the first prize !

Hillary said it was midwinter--Snowing and quite cold. Donald is taking her to ski in the mountains outside Salt Lake City,Utah for the first time.

They were strangers who met on Facebook and had never met before. The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon.

As they were driving back down the mountain, she gradually began to realize she should not have had that extra latte!

They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere ! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while. Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point here she told him that he had better stop and let her go beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car.

They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and start writing her name in the snow. In the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed he was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking. All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation.

Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, Hillary discovered her buttocks were firmly glued against the car's fender. Thoughts of tongues frozen to poles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem, due to the extreme cold.

Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor of the moment, she answered her date's concerns about' what is taking so long' with a reply that indeed, she was 'freezing her butt off' and in need of some assistance!

He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma. Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem.

Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal! Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free. So, as she looked the other way, her first time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender.

As the audience screamed in laughter, she took the Donnie Dumper's first prize hands down. Or perhaps that should be 'pants down.' And you thought your first date was embarrassing. Donnie Dumper's comment was; "This gives a whole new meaning to being pissed off."

Oh and how did the first date turn out ? He became her husband and was now sitting together on the Donnie Dumper  show.

"The moral of the story is that they should water ski Kaua'i on the Hawai'ian Islands instead with the 80 degree Fahrenheit temperature all year round  and  live on Kimchee, fried rice, raw fish & poi."  Chester "Unc" Lau

If you laughed at this pass it on.
