"To Keep the Penny or not…that is the question..?" 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Monday)

"Guest-blogger Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst N.Y. and has worked in the ophthalmology field of medicine for over 30 years..." She talks about the days when a penny was actually worth something... Enjoy.

To Keep the Penny or not?

It seems that our government is leaning towards the decision of discontinuing the use of the penny; I never thought I’d see that day come to be.  I was raised on the importance of the penny.
The penny taught us all how to save money when we were young; it represented the value of saving for something big.  Our pennies would quickly add up to a large amount of currency in those days.
We would collect so many of them and ask the bank for rolls to put our pennies in.  Finding a penny on the ground is a symbol of good luck and if you then give that penny away, your luck will be all that more increased.
When we would find an old penny, we would take an eraser from a pencil and shine it to look new again.  How many of us would go to the penny candy isle at the five and dime store and buy a pocket full of dots and penny candy, full of sugar and good times.
I guess the generations that are coming up the ranks will have to collect the next best thing…..a nickel….life will never be the same.

"The Smart Politician..." 'Obama Da Dog'

Obama Da dog believes smart meters should replace politicians, read on...

This blog was published an an opinion article in the 04-21-12 edition of the Kaua'i Garden Island News: "Smart meters not that smart..." http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/mailbag/letters-for-saturday-april/article_6773d694-8b50-11e1-a7dd-001a4bcf887a.html

Smart meters  seem to be the hottest topic in many newspaper  forums across the country these days. Many electric companies across the country are replacing old electric  meters with  new state of the art meters to  rage and protest from consumers.

Smart meter talk will soon be replaced with the upcoming 2012  local state and national elections.

Imagine if smart meters were actually smart and could replace what we currently have for politicians.

Imagine smart meters solving  the recession, putting an end to barking dogs, leaf blowers and all noise pollution. Now imagine they could end traffic congestion, GMOs, racial tensions and drug abuse!

Smart meters just need to be re-programmed to replace human politicians  and we would  all live happily ever after, now that would be smart!

"Chewdaism..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

"Remember to chew your food at least 25 times before swallowing if you wish to become a member of 'Chewdaism!' ;D)"

I was recently  watching on television the "View "and saw an interview with author A.J. Jacobs who recently penned a book called, " Drop dead Healthy." Jacobs lost twenty lbs by doing things like literally running errands, taking the stairs, parking far away at mall and shopping centers, and changing his diet to eating no white food, except broccoli.

The main ingredient he credits to a new movement called Chewdaism, not to be confused with Judaism. Chewdaism is where you chew your food numerous  times until you swallow.

WE are a country of under-chewers which has  health implications. If we started using our molars by chewing more before swallowing  it would not only improve our digestion but our waistlines. A recent study financed by the  American journal of Nutrition found that when people chew almonds at least 25 times they absorbed more unsaturated fat (the good kind of fat) than those who chewed 10 times or less.

Funny thing is people always tell me I don't look Chewish, none the less I am a full fledged convert!

Unlike Judaism, Chewdaism requires no yearly membership dues,  attending services, circumcision or tax deductible donations.

Chewdaism is free and has my vote as  another  great  health  and spiritual alternative!

Is Seeing Believing...? 'Michael Herr' (Aloha Friday)

Renowned author Michael Herr is back guest-blogging on this awesome Aloha Friday talking about  what is really real... Make sure and check out Michael's website at; http://www.michaelherr.com/

ALOHA FRIDAY

April 20, 2012Ó

It's Aloha Friday.

Is Seeing Believing Anymore?

Aloha folks.
Got an email from a "friend" recently.  It contained nude photos of President Barack Obama's mother.  Putting aside the issue of poor taste, especially when it concerns the man who is our elected President, this message started me thinking.

The pictures in the email were real.  But the woman was not President Obama's mother.  She was a "pin-up" model from the 50's who bore a close resemblance to President Obama's mother.  Close but no cigar (possible pun related to President Clinton).

But what I got to thinking about goes way back.  Fifty some years ago my father worked in advertising.  He frequently did paste-ups of photos to include in circulars and catalogs.  He also did our Xmas cards and joke newsletters for people who were retiring.  It was easy for him to affix some one's face to someone else's body.  Years later photographers found ways in the darkroom to manipulate images humorously (or maliciously).

Then, a few years back, someone came up with PhotoShop (and other similar programs) that allowed anyone with a modest amount of skill to put together false images.  Some of these images are so blatantly false that they become quite humorous.  Others become quite slanderous.  As Raj in "The Big Bang Theory" once asked Leonard, "Do you think that's really Hillary doing the nasty with those five Japanese businessmen?"

When I look at images these days I frequently have to ask myself whether or not I think the person sending them had an ulterior motive.  Were they manipulated in order to present someone in a bad light?  Should I just ignore them, should I simply discard them, or should I reply to the person who sent them and call them to account?  I usually choose the later.

So, is seeing believing?  Unfortunately, not as much as it once was.

Okay folks, see you next week.

"Burritos and Wraps..." 'James "Kimo" Rosen'

Burritos  and Wraps can be made from any food groups, the question remains what is a burrito and what is a wrap?

The Burrito has been around for centuries, The basic burrito consists of a flour tortilla filled with the likes but not limited to  beans and cheese, beef, chicken or fish.

The wrap is any kind of tortilla filled with chicken, fish, leftover Chinese food, tuna fish and at times a Caesar salad, any food group can go into a wrap.
The question remains where does one draw the line between a burrito and a wrap?  It has been said a wrap is a yuppies version of a burrito. I have heard it mentioned that real men don't eat wraps, (especially quiche wraps,) they eat burritos.
The wrap is just  a marketing tool, anything can go into a wrap just as any food group can go into a burrito even hot-dogs and peanut and jelly.
How about a burrito wrap, placing a burrito in a wrap,  or  a wrap burrito, placing a wrap in a burrito,  better yet  for a true 'rap' place the burrito on a turntable and turn up the speakers, now that's a rap~!

"Rocks and Roses on Kaua'i..." 'Bettejo Dux' (Classic Wednesdays)

Bettejo Dux a few years back...
Guest-blogger Bettejo Dux is one of Kauai's most colorful people, she has lived on the cosmic island of Kaua'i for over 40 years... She is an animal lover, people lover and enjoys life to the fullest.Today she guest blogs about  a party a few years back, enjoy... She also  publishes her own blog column.

Tonight in Hanapepe was all roses. I must admit I loved it. I do seem to be the kind of person you either like or you hate-for who knows what reasons-and while I often say I don't know which role I prefer, in truth I do love  the roses. But I'm lucky, most of the rock throwers have lousy aim.
In Manila I was the brash young American everybody loved to love. I simply could do no wrong. When I returned to America-suburbia USA, at least for most of my years back on the home turf-I was the one 'they' loved to hate. One of the first things Bill said when he landed the job as Engineering Department Head at McBryde Sugar, was "...and I'm going to have to keep you on a plantation." That was certainly prophetic and profound.
Kauai, which I immediately fell in love with, was my spot. I felt I'd been born to live here; but it was a feudal state. Benevolent. but the 'high' society  into which I'd been tossed was not my cup of tea. Plantation managers, at that time, were kings and department heads and their wives lords and ladies of the court with a much higher rank and station than the common ordinary working bloke. And field hands?  Well, my dear, like true aristocracy it was best to ignore their existence.  My egalitarian blood and up-bringing did not sit  well with that one. Besides, I rode my horse in those fields. I was out there with the field hands and felt quite comfortable with them. The mule handlers and I were on a first name bases.
The very first incident was one I could easily have avoided but stirred my sassy bone and tickled my tendency to tail tweak.
It was a call from the manager's wife. Not a social call, more an order. A company party had been arranged  to welcome us into the elite fold. There was no human concern. No interest in my  adaptation. Just a curt, "We do not wear mini skirts..." and goodbye.
Okay, I'll admit, the little hairs at the back of my neck began twitching. What was this? Was this a kid's party? Should I bring a balloon? Anyway, I wasn't defiant. I searched and found the perfect dress. Long in the hem. It dragged on the floor. But the neckline was low enough to make a baby cry. Okay, I'll admit, it was a wrong move. But me? Make a wrong move? Never.
At any rate, this sealed my fate. I, obviously, did not belong.  Well, all newcomers were gifted with gorgeous red carnation leis. But not this night. I got them all. They covered up the view. I looked like I'd just won the Kentucky Derby. I took them off and passed them around to other newcomers.
This gracious gesture didn't go over, either.
Until just a few months before Bill died, I was the one never invited to the party's the ladies went to. but since I didn't even know about them I wasn't bother by them. Even  if I had known about them I'd not have been bothered by them.

"A well planned retirement..." 'Chester "Unc" Lau' (Source)

Chester "Unc" Lau  is a retired cinematographer living his retirement years on the island of Oahu. "Unc" is a former army master sergeant of the Korean war and  is fond of the naturist lifestyle. Welcome "Unc" back as the source of today's guest blog," A true story from the London Times, " A well planned retirement."

This one is one of the best. From The London Times:

A Well-Planned Retirement

Outside England 's Bristol Zoo there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 buses. For 25 years, its parking fees were managed by a very pleasant attendant. The fees were for cars, about $1.40, for buses about $7.

Then, one day, after 25 solid years of never missing a day of work, he just didn't show up; so the Zoo Management called the City Council and asked it to send them another parking agent..

The Council did some research and replied that the parking lot was the Zoo's own responsibility. The Zoo advised the Council that the attendant was a City employee. The City Council responded that the lot attendant had never been on the City payroll.

Meanwhile, sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain (or some such scenario), is a man who'd apparently had a ticket machine installed completely on his own; and then had simply begun to show up every day, commencing to collect and keep the parking fees, estimated at about $560 per day -- for 25 years.
Assuming 7 days a week, this amounts to just over $7 million dollars!
......
And no one even knows his name.

Uncs" added commentary on da story!

I Knew his name, but I won't tell,he his the Rabbi with the black dog name Lady Obama now having fun living in the prettiest island in Hawaii call Kauai surrounded by good cyber friends around da world with a huge taro farm to make Kosher POI for gentiles :-D
