Was this the plan all along?

Does Donald Trump really want to be President of The United States?  Did  he purposely sabotage the Republicans and become their nominee only to Hijack the GOP and give the election to the Democrats?    Could "The Donald" actually believe everything he says? He actually had me going for awhile. But there was a straw that broke the camels back, no matter what party you are affiliated with you cannot run for President and mock a Purple heart recipient.

This election is like none ever. I heard someone say they are voting for the greater  of the two evils?  Do you want Satan or the Anti Christ?  And which Witch is which?  

Whatever happened to the days of dreaming big and getting a man on the moon? These days it seems the most important thing is getting a man to be able to use the woman's restroom and a woman to use the men's restroom. 

Political correctness has gone far enough, All lives matter!   

It's really starting to look like Trump Hijacked the Republican party to Hell and there's no coming back?

Oh wait! Hold on! To be continued next week on the 'Political Apprentice' (sic) on NBC!

Glenn Mickens has lived on Kauai  with his wife Ruth for the last 26 years. Born July 26, 1930 in Wilmar, California, USA) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched in four games (two of which were starts) for the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played for five years in Japan, from 1959 until 1963 for the Kintetsu Buffaloes. There, he compiled a record of 45–53 with a 2.54 ERA.  Glenn also  served in the Army for 2 years and coached baseball at UCLA for 25 years. 
Last but not least Glenn would really like to see Kaua'i give the county manager style of Government a chance.

Taxpayers paying for materials they are not getting

While our Administration and Council ponder over how they will ever find the $100 million it will take to fix our horrible roads, some of the worst in the nation, they ignore the facts that have been told and shown to them for 20 years or more. The answer IS NOT MORE TAXES!

Our bid contracts for repaving our county roads, 300 miles of them, have repeatedly shown that the final lift, the finishing overlay, will be 1 1/2" thick--2" of Asphaltic (sic) Concrete (AC) when compacted will give 1 1/2".

For 2 decades various Council member, Mayors, department heads. engineers and deputy county engineers have been shown roads at different locations where the final lift (cracking and coming off) was 1/2" to 3/4" thick. These less than bid pieces of AC were presented for inspection at many council meetings and what action or investigation was taken--none, absolutely none!

Understand that we, the tax payers had been paying for materials that we were not getting (under Larry Dill the policy was finally corrected) and over many years this fraudulent act was costing us hundreds of millions of dollars.

I have no idea who is responsible for this wrongful action to have happened but those on the council or in the Administration who have known about this activity over the years are as culpable for not investigating as the one or ones committing the crime.

 The Charter provides in Section 3.17 for the Council to have the power to investigate situations such as this, but it never has and it seems unwilling even now. The Council should be asked why it is so reluctant to look into how and why the County is being ripped off. Its failure to use its investigative power to look at the continuing situations  which remain targets for additional fines and illegal activities at the County’s four transfer stations is also mysterious.

Our former Auditor and my good friend, Ernie Pasion did 8 great audits and found out many corrections that needed to be done in our county operations.
But these problems and corrections he recommended were never pursued so this pattern of not ever finding out and placing blame continues.

At the coming meetings where the candidates will tell us why they want to represent us on the council it will be prudent to ask the hard questions--who will have the fortitude to really go after those who are knowingly doing wrong.

Smoking in Cars ain't what it used to be...

I believe Arryl  Kaneshiro is the only county council member who got it right on bill # 2629 which prohibits smoking in cars with children under the age of 13. The vote was 6-1 with councilman  Kaneshiro  the dissenting vote. Mr. Kaneshiro on this move alone has earned my respect and vote for re-election.

I thought this was a joke when I first read it. When I was a kid my dad smoked big cigars and my mom smoked cigarettes in their cars. When the smoke bothered us kids they rolled the windows down.

 I have never smoked as an adult, however when I was a kid of 11, 12 and 13 I smoked. What happens if a 12 year old is caught smoking in a car?

This law is insanely ridiculous,where does government stop? I believe this law is unconstitutional.  I am not a lawyer but how can you prohibit an adult from smoking tobacco in their own automobile? If I were a smoker and had young kids I would challenge this bill. Public places like restaurants, bars, movie theaters are different.

A few years back the council voted against banning outdoor fires and BBQ's that sent smoke into neighboring yards making it hard for many with respiratory  problems. How is this car thing any different and why should government be monitoring what we do in our cars as long as it's legal?

What's next getting a ticket for breaking wind with rolled up windows in your car because someone could die of the stench? This may sound ridiculous, so is bill #2629. 

Council needs to concentrate their efforts on important things like  more roads, affordable housing and homelessness. I could care less whose smoking a cigarette in their car. If it bothers someone,roll down the dam window!

Maybe the council could bring to the floor for first reading a bill that would ban Monster pickup trucks with tinted windows from tailgating while those inside the truck are not only smoking smoking cigarettes but smoking pot, drinking beer, talking on their cell phones, eating fast food, all while nobody is able to look in.   Maybe this would be a bill worthy of making into law? (LOL)

 

There are many new people running for county council. Change is obviously needed from an incompetent county council as seen from bill #2629. Please consider the new voices and study their bios that will appear in the coming weeks in TGI. Vote for the issues, vote for a better Kauai! I will be voting all new newbies and for 2 incumbents that will hopefully 'trump' (sic) all others currently serving.

It's that time again for neighborhood garage sale fun. I will be spending tonight tagging and sorting  "treasures" from the homestead that have spent enough time in seclusion.

 

Cleaning out the cupboards for glasses etc that I have long forgotten about , clothing that "might" fit if 10 pounds are lost and  assorted "chakchas" that have over run the shelves.  

Even though the signs say open at 8A.M. I know people will be meandering the streets to get the best "stuff" first pic.  We get about 20 homes participating each year and enjoy just exchanging stories of the shoppers with the home owners. 

 Better get myself started getting the tables out....and my final rule...Nothing gets back in the House"..donate, donate, donate the rest.Yard, Garage, Estate sale, call it what you want.

Deceptive political campaign posters

Tis the season, my favorite season. Political junkies like myself  relish this time of year as a football fan looks forward to the playoffs.  Not only is this an election year on Kaua'i for the 2 year county council seats but it is a presidential election. 

Cruising through Kapaa town on my bicycle I get to observe the many campaign signs littering the frontage of many Kuhio highway properties. 

The one thing that really bothers me are the campaign posters that in many instances make the candidates look years younger than they currently are. This is because the photos are many years and many pounds less than what they currently look like. One candidate I will not mention by name has a photo that must be 10-15 years old.

Woman politicians use to be the primary culprits of this narcissistic act of vanity but it did not take their male counterparts long to catch on.

Politics begins with the campaign poster. If the politician running is going to be deceptive from the start in a campaign poster, how else will they be deceptive? Can I ever trust them?

I believe there should be some sort of ordinance or law that all campaign photos cannot be more than  6 months old.That is not to much to ask in this day in age of smart phones, social media and selfies. 

Ask yourself a simple question; If the politician will deceive you in a photo before he or she is even in office, how will they deceive you  if God forbid they ever win and take office?

Canal Canal on the water, Do I look old?

As I "gracefully"  age, I look in the mirror and think "do I look old"?

This past  weekend I felt like the mirror answered me. We went with friends  to Buffalo's canal side which has evolved over the last few years to a bustling port full of beauty and activities to see and do. 

One of the activities was a Ferry boat ride across the water to view the renovated light house.  It was a small Ferry with standing room and bench seats as well.

As we approached the seats there were a few small areas left to sit on--a woman on the bench that I would guess to be in her late 40's,  asked us if we needed a seat as she would offer her seat and she would stand.   If ever I felt old, that was the time..no mirror needed this time...just harsh reality, and I thought to myself "do I look that old?"

Well the 60's are good for some things--discounts at many places, extra courtesy given, and open seating.Wonder what the 70's will bring?

Para Transit Bus Service ain't what it used to be
The Para transit bus service is one of the many  perks of being over 60 and living on the Garden Island.

Recently those at the top of the chain  decided to change the computer system with a new GPS in every bus  plus  new dispatch computers showing all at the central location where every bus is every minute. Eventually down the road allowing customers access to seeing where buses are just by logging onto a computer or smartphone.

This all sounds great, however there is an old expression, "if it ain't broke, why fix it?"

Somebody decided that each Para Transit driver every day shall drive a different route. Before drivers had fixed routes they were familiar with and riders that looked forward to their drivers knowing their needs. Many para transit customers are wheel-chair bound and have special needs. It takes time for the drivers to get to know the needs of those with special needs. A routine is imperative for the job to be done efficient.

This would be like having a cleaning service sending you a different person every week instead of having a person of routine who knows what you like.

to make more sense to
a majority of the drivers and
passengers.

The Para Transit drivers are some of the most Aloha oriented people I have ever met. The people running the Kauai bus have no idea what it's like to be a passenger or driver, they seem to have no common sense?

The drivers go to work and 
have no idea where they are starting their day, North, South, East, or West side of the island.
Whomever is responsible for the recent change in demanding that every para transit driver have a different route every day needs to be fired--no second chances, no let's talk about it. 

I do not know how much money was spent on this new program for the Kauai bus, but every driver I have talked with and every passenger I have spoke with is very disappointed. Most people say nothing because that is the local way.

The only people that are thrilled are the ones who sold the program and those who profited with commission sales through this idiotic program. It would be interesting to see who profited from this program and how much did this cost the taxpaying public?

Technology is not always the best choice, in many instances the human element out trumps(excuse the pun) them all.
