Just a haircut please

Men's haircuts have become like everything else  very expensive not only in  Hawaii but all over America.

Currently there are no barber shops in Kapaa town.   My favorite Barber Floyd who resided at Kojima plaza for many years recently retired and Maile another barber in Wailua recently moved to Puhi.

Now  to get a haircut in Kapaa a guy needs to go to a unisex shop or a beauty parlor. I hate beauty parlors. They usually always wash your hair with these scented shampoos,  talk drama as they are cutting hair and blow drying.  When  pau, they use smelly  hairsprays and  gels and charge a minimum of  5.00 extra  for trimming beards.

A mans haircut will cost anywhere from low-ball of $20.00 to $45.00  depending in where you go...
I recently went to an old established barber shop located in the heart of Lihue. It is run by a local Japanese family with 3 generations of barbers in the family. I will not mention the name of the  barber shop since the Garden Island  News doesn't like to give free advertising. However this barber shop is located across from the old Big Save in Lihue.

Walk ins only-- 5 barber chairs that are usually full, great haircuts that usually take no more than 10-15 minutes,  no smelly shampoos, no listening to anybody's drama and the best part in this day in age is $12.00 for a haircut.

Give credit where credit is due. I am so thankful  to still be able to afford a haircut. Not only was I able to afford a haircut but at that price I was able to show my appreciation and leave a  a generous tip of 2.00 for one of the best haircuts I ever received.

OK, I am hoping TGI mentions this barber shop by name. Mahalo Nui Loa, Arigato Gozaimasu Ikeda's Barber shop. I am sure next time Ikedas  will remember me as the big tipper!

"Beware of cyber crime..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Friday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York
( A suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.)
and has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for nearly 40 years

Beware of cyber crime

Recently booking some hotel reservations, I was hacked by a cyber crook during my phone conversation who actually took over my call.  They addressed themselves as the Hotel reservations desk but were really not!!!  That's all it took to use my credit card as a vehicle to charge anything they felt like.

Luckily I was very suspicious and tracked down my transaction and reported it immediately to my credit card company.  I know this goes on every day but when it hits home it can play havoc with your credit.

Beware of anything that doesn't seem right,  it is  probably is NOT right.  Listen to your instincts and pay attention!  and Good luck.

"Raccoon's and Trump..." 'Larry Arruda' (Source)

Please welcome guest-blogger Mr. Larry Arruda. Larry is the source of this blog, not the actual author.

Larry was born and raised in Lihu'e Kauai.Graduated from Wilcox Elementary in 1959
and Kauai High School in 1963. Larry is a Vietnam war veteran. Larry served 30 years in Costa Mesa California  as a highway design administrator. Larry Retired in 2002 and moved back home to Kauai in 2003.

Raccoon's and Trump

Editors note,
Larry Arruda, is the source not
the author of the enclosed viral email.

Like many citizens, I’ve wondered and tried hard to understand why Trump has such a remarkable following.  (It's obvious why he shouldn’t!)  Then a friend sent me this raccoon story.  It makes no difference about your political leanings, this is just a good explanation of WHY.

Dear Representative,

From the time I was able to vote, I voted Republican. I am 83 and have a great deal of respect and influence with hundreds of senior ballplayers who also network with thousands of others around the country.

I received your questionnaire and request for money to help support the Republican nominee for the office of the President.  Rest assured, I strongly agree with every question as I have since Obama was elected.  Unfortunately, an important question that was missing was, “What have the Republicans and their Party done for the American people lately?” While you seem never to have listened to us in the past Forty Years, we gave you a majority in the house and senate two years ago and you have done nothing with the power we provided you.  And Now, you want more of our money?

You should be concerned about our votes not our money.  You are the “establishment” and it’s apparent all you really want to do is to save your jobs and line your pockets. . . Well, guess what?  It’s not going to happen.  You can shake in your boots when I tell you our support is for TRUMP and he hasn’t asked for a dime.

You might think we are fools because you feel Trump is on a self-destruct course but you look outside DC and listen to the masses.  Few, if any, have achieved what he has, especially in the state of New York.  If you really want to know how the majority of people feel, and this applies to both democrats and republicans, read on, it says it all.

The Raccoons...

You've been on vacation for two weeks, you come home, and your basement is infested with raccoons.  Hundreds of rabid, messy, mean raccoons have overtaken your basement.  You want them gone immediately.  You call the city, the county and 4 different exterminators.  Nobody can handle the job . . . But then you hear of one guy and this one guy guarantees to get rid of them.  So you hire him.  You don't care if the guy smells, you don't care if he cusses and swears, you don't care if he's an alcoholic, you don't care how many times he's been married, you don't care if he voted for Obama, you don't care if he has plumber's crack, you simply want those raccoon's gone!  You want your problem fixed!  He's the guy.  He's the best.  Period

Back to Trump...

Here’s why we want Trump.  Yes he's a bit of an ass, yes he's an egomaniac, but we don't care.  The country is a mess because its politicians suck.  The Republican Party is two-faced & gutless, and illegals are everywhere.  We want it all fixed!  We don't care that Trump is crude, we don't care that he insults people, we don't care that he had been friendly with Hillary, we don't care that he has changed positions, we don't care that he's been married 3 times, we don't care that he fights with Megyn Kelly and Rosie O'Donnell, we don't care that he doesn't know the name of some Muslin terrorist.

This country is bankrupt and appears weak.  Our enemies are making fun of us, we are being invaded by illegal's, we are becoming a nation of victims where every Tom, Ricardo and Hasid is a special group with special rights to a point where we don't even recognize the country we were born and raised in.  "AND WE JUST WANT IT FIXED" and Trump is the only guy who seems to understand what the people want.

We're sick of our politicians, sick of the Republican Party, sick of the Democrat Party and sick of illegal’s.  We just want this thing fixed.  Trump may not be a saint, but he doesn't have lobbyist’s money holding him accountable to THEM, he doesn't have political correctness restraining him, all you know is that he has been very successful, a good negotiator, and has built a lot of things.  He's also not a politician, not a cowardly politically correct politician. And he not only says he can fix it, he says he WILL fix it and we believe him.

And we believe him because he is too much of an egotist to be proven wrong or looked at and called a liar.  Also we don't care if the guy has bad hair.  We just want those raccoon's gone, out of our house, NOW.

I feel this is why hundreds of thousands of people that haven't voted in 25 years are registering to vote this year. The raccoon's have got to go.

Sincerely, An 83 year old voter

Mahalos Glenn!
Vote for Norma Doctor Sparks

There are some fine new candidates running for Council this year and some very good incumbents. But none of these candidates possess the amazing qualifications that Norma Doctor Sparks does.

Her experiences  would certainly qualify her for any governmental position in Hawaii and would make her a prime candidate for our County Council.
Glenn Mickens, Larry Arruda,
Ken Taylor, Walter Lewis
and James "Kimo" Rosen
support Norma Doctor Sparks!

She was born in Koloa and her passion is to make Kaua'i a better place for all of to live. She wants to use her years of knowledge and experience to make this happen. She learned well from her parents, Bienvenido and Sofia Doctor, about helping others as they started the first nursing home in Hawaii in 1957 and ran it for 30 years.

She worked for the State of Hawaii for 20 years as a social worker, supervisor, and administrator in human services. For 10 years, she managed two state-wide agencies and had offices on all islands, including Kauai.   Most recently, she lived in California where, amongst many other important positions, she was the Assistant Director with Los Angeles County Department of Public Social Services where she managed a 4 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET with 14,000 employees under her.

She has extensive experience in budgeting and financial management contracts, human resources and informational technology. For her work and skills of what she accomplished, in 2007 she was recognized as one of the top 100 Filipino women in the U.S.--an amazing honor for any person!  And in 1999 President Clinton recognized her for the highest percentage of increased adoptions in the Nation!

Needless to say that the people of Kauai would be fortunate and honored to have this brilliant local woman with all this ability being one of their 7 council members. Think of our budget continually exploding and how she could help manage it WITHOUT RAISING TAXES!

Hawaii, Let's avoid a major Hepatitis A Pandemic

Finally the culprit of the Hepatitis A outbreak was discovered  on the Hawaiian islands. It was tainted scallops from the Philippines primarily served at a short order franchised sushi restaurant named 'Genki sushi.'
Number sickened in Hep A outbreak linked to scallops hits 206 (Hawaii News Now)
http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/32680042/number-sickened-in-hepatitis-a-outbreak-hits-135?sf32457160=1
The irony of this is that Genki in Japanese means 'healthy.' The most popular expression in the Japanese language is "Genki Deska," which translates literally, (are you healthy) but is used to mean-- (how are you, howszit?)  Typical answer is (Genki Des.) (Yes, I am healthy!)

So far as of this writing there are approximately 300 confirmed cases of the Hepatitis A virus.
There are bound to be more since the incubation period is said to be long.

The state of Hawaii is in crisis since this virus can have a trickle down effect. One person  carrying the virus can infect many others, and those others can effect others... It can run out of control and be devastating

We are hoping the schools and state of Hawaii in association with Genki sushi restaurants have a mandatory vaccination for all keiki and adults. Please write your state senators immediately before we go into a major pandemic!

In the mean time vaccines are available without a prescription for $95.00 at Long drugs and other local pharmacies. If you want your Insurance to pay for the vaccination you must get a prescription form your PCP.

Young or old, anybody can suffer a heart attack

Every so often we are made to  realize and are faced with the fragility of life.

The circle of life happens every day.We live a long life and as our bodies wear out we are faced with  and realize the inevitable will happen some day.
Steve and Judy fly out west to be with Joel
during his heart surgery

We never expect to be surprised at a young age that life can be threatened so easily, hence my young son having a heart attack.

Living a fast life style and not taking care of his body caused an almost total blockage of his main left artery; a  fatal finding if not addressed immediately with surgery.  We are thanking GOD and an angel that must have been watching over him because he obtained medical attention in time and has a new lease on life.

If anything else, it has taught us that even at a young age we must not ignore the warning signs; chest pain, indigestion and shoulder pain were his symptoms.
Joel, rest up and feel better
L'chayim!(To Life)

Many wanted to treat him with digestion medications.Who would imagine that it was his heart. Listen to that little voice in your head and seek emergency treatment. It can and most often will save your life.

This is done tongue-n-cheek with a bit of reality... Enjoy!  ;-)
... And note, this blog also appeared as a stand alone opinion column

Win or Lose, Could Trump Be A Secret Agent For Hillary..?

I would like to start by pointing something out in Donald Trump's genius;

Have you ever seen the photos of Trump sitting alone in his private jet eating a McDonald's  Bic Mac or a bucket of  Kentucky fried chicken and the next day the late night comics are making a laughing stock of his diet? Laugh no more. The jokes on them.

A reliable source has informed me that Trump gets paid for the placement of those products if they appear on news shows and in the national press. That's 'The Donald,' always thinking while others think he's filling his arteries with plaque he's actually getting paid for product placement.

Moving on to reality, many Americans including myself  were tired of the stereotypical lying, cheating and crooked  political candidates running for office. We drank the 'Trump Kool-aide.'
Donald J.Trump,"The Donald" seemed refreshing, like the change the country needed?

Trump said early on, he could commit murder and he would still have his core supporters.

With his recent remarks denouncing a purple heart recipient and an off the wall innuendo for somebody to shoot Hillary Clinton, along with calling President Obama the founder of Isis. I truly believe Mr.Trump is purposely throwing the election, while having some fun at the media's expense?

Let's not forget Mr.Trumps most memorable quote,
"Look at those hands, are they small hands? And, [Republican rival Marco Rubio] referred to my hands: 'If they're small, something else must be small.' I guarantee you there's no problem. I guarantee."
24 Of The Most Outrageous Donald Trump Quotes
http://www.marieclaire.co.uk/blogs/550112/donald-trump-quotes.html
Why would The Donald want to be President?  He makes more money being an Entrepreneur and reality TV star. His home is nicer than the white-house. He has his own private jet already. He will loose all his privacy. There's no way Trump ever wanted to be President. This has all been a show, a plot to bring down the Republicans. All while "The Donald" had some fun seeing who would actually drink his Kool-aide. I did, I did!

I believe he is  hijacking the Republicans and will come out with a tell all story before this is all said and done and be hailed a genius? The irony is, he almost pulled it off, surprising not only himself but his harshest critics.

Here's  how I feel the ending of the Trump saga will go;
He had an affidavit notarized  during the Republican primaries when he realized he was a front-runner. The notarized manifesto contained the information that he does not want to be President and will continually make off the wall remarks to hopefully loose voters so Hillary wins and he can personally hijack the GOP into extinction.
The Trumps and Clinton's have been friends
for many years. Are they both pulling
an act on the American people?

After the election Trump not only gets his life back but writes a best selling book on how he alone hijacked the republican party into extinction.Trumps not only a genius but a secret agent for Hillary. Foxaholics (sic) are going to be crushed.

Ivanka Trump becomes Hillary Clinton's Secretary of state and the Unites states becomes United once and for all--and America becomes truly great again!

Trump emerges an Urban legend folk hero with a new reality show that hit's the biggest Nielsen ratings in the history of television! Yes, The Donald's new show has bigger ratings than even the Super Bowl.
