Close call on the pedestrian trail in Kapaa on Thursday ,8-30-18.
I was walking my dog around 11:00 AM Thursday, a man in his mid 
60's  careened his SUV of the Oceanside side cliffs opposite Friendship house
around 10:00 AM. Thank God nobody on the trail was injured.
The man walked away with no injuries. The police were calling it
a miracle that nobody was injured.

 Weather people seem to always get it wrong

 The  weather people employed by the major network affiliates in Hawaii seem to never get it right.

 

Last week 5 days prior to Hurricane Lane's alleged arrival there was 24-7 coverage interrupting my favorite TV shows  to buy bottled water, Spam, Ramen noodles and toilet paper.

  
They interrupted pre-season football and worst of all Judge Judy.  

This went on for days, be ready they said, fill your bath tub with water, have extra batteries for the radio and some candles ready when the electricity eventually goes out. 

When it rains hard my back door will occasionally flood. After the April floods I went on Amazon and purchased a Hydro barrier, it's an alternative to sandbags. I cannot lift sandbags due to my spinal condition. The hydro barrier is great, just bring the hose to fill it up!

network affiliates reporting constant weather for 3 days you'd think someone would had gotten it right? Back in April during the worst floods in Kauai's history there was no warning by any of these weatherman/meteorologists

said we dodged a bullet in Hawaii and here on Kauai the hurricane has passed us by...--Then last Monday and Tuesday August 27th and 28th we had major flooding again on Kauai's North and South shores.  We are sad to report Kauai had a fatality of a man dying rescuing a dog in a flooded stream.

Please don't interrupt my favorite TV shows especially NFL football games to tell me of the  weather you think may be coming, even if it's a ballistic missile scare, I really don't want to know, because if it's for real we're all gonna die any way.

Therefore  why  not go out happy watching 'Judge Judy'  your favorite football team, 'Bachelor in Paradise', even reruns of 'Gomer Pyle,'  'Kauai county council meetings,'or your favorite show?

 Local  meteorologists  please take note of how to report accurate weather!
 My favorite all time weather report,  by the late George Carlin, "Weather forecast for tonight: 
Dark, continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning."

That's one they never get wrong!  Along with the famous Mexican weather report of, "Chili today and hot Tamale."

The Hurricane, Price Gouging,The Miracle
 ~Plus comedy relief memes of Lane~

 The worst part was waiting.  The hours seemed liked days and the minutes were like hours in the days  prior to the  media hype, madness and hysteria of hurricane Lane.

  
For 3 days government offices, schools, and many business were shut down in what the media was making seem like the end of times.  
Costco, Walmart and most major retailers sold out of almost all bottled water, batteries, toilet paper and Ramen noodles.  

The other worst part for many during the storm was, Hawaii McDonald's turned off their famous discount app that allows you to purchase either a Bic Mac or a Quarter pounder for $1.00. There reason was they were afraid of running out of food with barges being docked at sea until the storm was over. They actually wanted to slow production.

  Price gouging is illegal during natural disasters.   Marking items up because people are in need does happen.  What I say won't be popular with many, however I believe price gouging happens year round on Kauai in this tourist haven. 

Food trucks charging $15.00 for a hamburger and not even supplying  restrooms or a place to wash your hands and having the audacity to ask for tips in a  mayonnaise jar with a rusty lid? I spoke with a visitor that couldn't believe they spent $32.00 plus tax at a local food truck for a burger and a burrito, that was ala carte.

The local farmers market have vendors selling mangoes for $5.00 each with no middle man involved. I can buy a similar mango imported form Mexico at the local Safeway for $1.00 with a middle man, truck driver, barge, farmer and retailer all involved for $4.00 less. If price gouging is illegal during disasters how come it isn't illegal during our everyday lives? 

 The reality is the big box stores are the only places you can feel comfortable not getting  ripped off whether during a disaster or in your day to day life. Americans are capitalists, they are greedy, it's in their blood.

According to a local politician there are  consequences if a merchant violates the price gouging law?

"Violation of the price increase prohibition is an unfair method of competition, and an unfair deceptive act or practice under Haw. Rev. Stat. § 480-2, subject to civil penalties as provided for in Haw. Rev. Stat. § 480-3.1. Each item sold in violation of the law is a separate violation. Fines of $500, up to $10,000, per day, per violation, are possible." 
Why aren't there laws for everyday price gouging  for places like some food trucks and a few vendors of the farmers markets?

All in all they say better safe than sorry! This could’ve been Armageddon, instead we live to tell another story about the one that got away, but this time it's not like the fish that got away. It's great that it got away!

Hawaii dodged a bullet, a category 5 hurricane nicknamed by locals "Hurricane Lane change," downgraded to a tropical storm, downgraded to a tropical depression in the shortest time the meteorologists had ever seen in any 
hurricane or storm of this magnitude.

          The professionals cannot answer why it changed, all the satellites said the contrary. I believe in prayer and with so many praying for safety, I call it a miracle!

    “Not all storms come to disrupt your life, some come to clear your path!”

High prices, price gouging, who cares, it's paradise, right?

Let's be smart about lawn maintenance and politicians

Why in the year 2018 with all the  environmental laws on emissions are lawnmowers,weed-whackers

 and weed blowers still so loud that the operators of these machines use commercial  ear muffs designed for shooting ranges and airport maintenance workers.?

It is common here in Hawaii to live in condos or apartment complexes with multiple units that exceed 100 or more units.
When the ground maintenance come it's like a war zone every 2 weeks. Tenants cannot talk on their phones or even watch TV since the noise levels are deafening.  The noise levels exceed rock concert decibel levels at times.

What would be so hard as for the law to require mufflers on sit-down and push lawn mowers, weed whackers, weed blowers and all other

yard maintenance equipment? Motor vehicles on our nations highways and roads have requirements for noise and emissions why not our lawn maintenance equipment that comes within inches of our homes?

It seems somewhat hypocritical that the operators of these machines use hearing muffs and or ear plugs but expect the tenants where they are working to endure the noise with their naked ears. The exhaust can also be hard to handle for many especially the elderly and those with  breathing impairments.  

Did you know that one gas powered leaf blower operating for 30 minutes puts out more emissions than a car traveling 2,000 miles?

The noise of lawn mowers drives me crazy, or should I say crazier. I was once at an open air restaurant and they

decided to cut the lawn at peek lunch hour, everybody had a hard time talking to place their orders. I could not have a conversation with my luncheon date either. That was the last time I frequented that restaurant.

Technology has come a long way with 'Smart phones,' 'Smart TV's' and Smart devices in general! It's time for Smart lawn equipment that doesn't make noise, or pollute--- however first we need Smart politicians to make this all happen!

This will be a difficult race for many to vote and most will keep their voice behind the privacy curtain in the  voting booth.

I say friendship aside, vote for the person whom you feel would make Kauai function best! I tell my friends pretend Kauai is your own personal business and you are hiring a CEO to manage and be the CEO for

your company, who would you trust your business with to prosper and make money, who would you trust your checking account with?  It doesn't matter who you would rather have a beer or talk story with, although that is important , however not the objective.

person to fill the shoes of the mayor's job,
especially since it is rumored Mayor Carvalho
 wears a size 13  shoe. May the best man win! 

Remember driving is  out of control with bumper to bumper gridlock and when you do manage to gain momentum on the open road you will most likely be tailgated, nobody on Kauai seems to follow  the simple rule of one car length for each  10 miles per hour...

Everyday new trucks and cars are sold on Kauai. Everyday at least one new driver comes of age. Every day more and more visitors arrive. Everyday new people move to our island to call it home bringing more trucks, cars, boats and motorcycles over crowding our few roads ever more.

According  to the Kauai  County website;  Kauai only hosts  235 miles of paved roadways and 40 miles of unpaved roadways.

It's time Kauai's next mayor take the bull by the horns, traffic gridlock cannot continue. There is also a desperate need for affordable housing(my favorite oxymoron)

How can housing be affordable in Hawaii, it's like the phrase Jumbo shrimp.

Affordable housing an oxymoron in Hawaii 

 Affordable housing is number 1 on many political agendas with the upcoming elections.

Here on Kauai where a fixer upper home in a not so good section of the island can set you back A half million or more.  

There is an affordable housing development under construction in Hanamaulu on Kauai where the sign reads, affordable units starting at $400,000. Believe or not that’s for a duplex, a half of a house!

Affordable housing to  me is like a Jumbo shrimp, it is an Oxymoron , how can a shrimp be jumbo or housing in Hawaii be affordable?

The elections are coming in November and promises will be made by politicians, but will these promises be met for affordable housing by these 'honest politicians,' another oxymoron!

Let the 'honest politicians' promise you 'affordable housing' while they wine and dine you on 'Jumbo shrimp!" They will make (more oxymoron's) 'bitter sweet' promises being 'seriously funny' as we all 'agreed to disagree'  in a 'love hate relationship ' as we remain 'clearly confused about the craziness of 2 words, affordable housing.
