"What ever happened to Cursive writing..?" 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Friday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York
( A suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.)
and has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for nearly 40 years

What ever happened to Cursive writing?

After my mom had passed away several years ago we began the task of reminiscing as we poured through her belongings, we had to decide what to keep, cherish, and/ or donate. I came across her school report cards that she had held on to for so many years. I also still have my old report cards from grammar school. Why do we keep such things...maybe for this very reason; so that our loved ones can discover them and take a trip down memory lane and learn even more about our loved ones.

They tell a path of which they have chosen to take in their early years and give us an insight as to where they had been.

My mother's report cards told a story of what her class choices were, she had taken-among them a class on penmanship-hard to believe that there was an actual grade given for lovely handwriting in cursive.

She had discussed this with me in my younger years, growing up with such pride that she had taken the
top award for her writings.

Times were so much simpler then and many women then secured jobs in offices etc that required good handwriting and shorthand skills. A skill that has fallen by the wayside many years ago. I also took shorthand in high school; and now I am dating myself. Office skills was a course offered as well in the
1960's. As my children attended their early years in school, they also had to practice handwriting on large scale paper sheets and were taught cursive as well.

What happened to those skills; children of today do not write cursive, they print everything, just like a typewriter or computer. Several years ago, to my surprise, public schools literally stopped teaching cursive...no more handwriting practice...with the pressures on new curriculum to be taught, there came little time to focus on those simple skills.

I even find myself printing when I have to “write” something. If you think about it, we really don't have to write much any more other than our signature. If we want to communicate, we text, e-mail or call people. We don't write letters any longer.

Shockingly, I recently heard that a few public schools in our area are again re starting the skill of teaching young students how to write cursively again. I guess we have decided to re visit the skill and have found that our young people cannot write properly any longer. It is no surprise that early on we
give our children electronics that enable them to communicate easily, no handwriting is required.

We have become such an impatient society, that we can quickly get our point across with a quick text;writing a letter takes much too much time to get our thoughts across. Nothing is in writing on paper any longer; job applications, banking etc are all done on the web these days.

There is really no need to even leave our home in many cases. Even this year I received fewer holiday cards and saw an increase in electronic greetings...it's easier and cheaper-no postage either which is a rising cost.

As a teen we were taught how to type in school and those same “home keys” are still used on a computer these days; the keyboard did not change but the knowledge on how to type is no longer stressed in school. How many people out there still “hunt and peck” the keyboard because they were never really taught how to “type”; a simple concept but yet long forgotten. Of course with spell check and auto correct, our young people don't really have to know, do they.

Dinosaur or not, I for one am still thankful for the days when cursive writing and typing were taught.

Whoever knew that something called “electronic records” would enter the scene many years later and made typing mandatory; it now is either type at warp speed, which I do, or hunt and peck your way through the day. Still happy I was born in the 1950's.

At a meeting of the archaeological society on Trump Tower in New York.
A picture across the wall of a cave shows the following symbols :

Inline image 1
The president-elect of an archaeological society pointed to first drawing and said:
It says: 'Holy mackerel, dig the ass on that chick"
"This is a woman. We can see these people held women in high esteem.
You can also tell they were intelligent, as the next symbol is a donkey,
so they were smart enough to have animals help them till the soil.
The next drawing is a shovel, which means they had tools to help them.
Even further proof of their high intelligence is the fish which means that
during a famine, they would seek food from the sea.
The last symbol appears to be the Star of David which means they were evidently Hebrew."
The audience applauded enthusiastically.

Then an old Jewish man stood up in the back of the room and said,
"Idiots. Hebrew is read from right to left . . .
It says: 'Holy mackerel, dig the ass on that chick "  :-)

Kimo's world's #166~Blog #1886

Happy Birthday Dakinetalk blog~

Editors forward

I have published 1886 dakinetalk blogs in the last 7 years.
dakinetalk is starting it's 8th year!

The first year it was all me, then in the second year dakinetalk teamed up with a few guest-bloggers. Teaming up with other bloggers was the best move for the ongoing popularity of the blog.

I want to thank everyone who has ever guest blogged. I want to mention names however I am afraid I may miss recognizing someone, therefore this is a big Mahalo Nui Loa to anyone who has ever contributed to dakinetalk.

Most important to the popularity are the many readers including you reading this right now.  There are days we reach 900-1,000 viewers, our average day brings in well over 400 views. This is not the New York times but we (Ivanka Da Dog and myself) are proud of these numbers.

The most popular blog I  ever published with over 10,000 views was a blog I penned--titled, "President Obama's sister." I believe the popularity is due to the name 'Obama' in the title, It comes up in many unrelated searches on Google and other search engines.

This past year I had over 30 blogs that had the name 'Trump' in the title and each blog did very well in the amount of hits received. The best received blog was;
"Trump, the election and the Jewish connection;"
It received over 5,000 views and  had 55 comments! Each of these blogs saw my friend list on Facebook diminish from over 1500 friends to just over 1200 friends today.   Many people took this election to anothger loevel and if you  did not support their candidate they un-friended you.  Oy!

The most views on a guest blog came form Bonnie Brenton on a blog titled; Now That I Have My Master’s Degree, What in Heck Am I Supposed to Do with It..? This blog received over 4,000 views! This blog went viral with the help of Bonnie's placement on chat lines to help people understand these conditions!

It's not easy being in the public eye and being the Publisher and Blogger-n-chief of daknietalk blog. However it is the most fun hobby a retired publisher and photographer could be doing in his spare time on an isolated rock in the middle of the Pacific!

Mahalo Nui Loa for reading  and contributing to my  blog. I hope I still have a few friends left on Facebook to read my blog in the coming years, if not I can always join President elect Trump on Twitter!

My Special Needs Dog

If my dog were human she would be a special needs child. I believe that's why I am so attached to her and love her more than any other pet I have ever had.

Ivanka, AKA Obama never learned to fetch although I spent numerous hours training her to do that simple act.

As a service dog she performs her service for me perfectly. She is extremely bright on many levels however on simple issues does not get real excited.

She sits, stays, never ever had a potty accident indoors even as a puppy.

One thing she is literally genius on that I have never seen in any other dog is on my friend's names.

She knows every ones name!

I could have 5 friends over and say, Ivanka where's Jojo, and she will go over to Jojo, where's Yoshi, she goes to Yoshi, you get the drift. She even knows other dog's names.

When we are out in  public she will pull me if she sees a friend and I don't , she will actually recognize a friend before I do.

The good thing about a special needs dog, she has to deal with a special needs dad, I love my dog!

I believe if my dog were human the doctors would diagnose her autistic. She is genius on so many levels, yet on simple things just doesn't care.

My dog is so awesome I can't stand it! Dogs really are mans best friend.

Special!!!
   Dakinetalk's very first blog which appeared January 7, 2010;
http://dakinetalk.blogspot.com/2010/01/bus-ride-from-hell.html
The Bus Ride From Hell;

The 11:00 o'clock bus had 2 bikes, two bikes is the maximum the Kauai Bus can accommodate, therefore I missed my bus, I did a few errands and waited for the 12:00 o'clock bus, my bike and I got on board this time in hopes of making it to the doctors office on time.

From Kojima store to Brick oven pizza a normal 10 minute bus ride took almost one hour.I started feeling nauseous, I had the drive heaves, the bus was literally at a standstill across from the Coconut market place, I asked the driver if i could please get off since I was about to loose my insides, she said it's illegal, I asked her if she would please call her dispatch, she complied and dispatch told her she could not let me off until the next designated bus stop at Brick oven pizza, which was a grueling 30 minute drive, something that normally is done in 2-3 minutes.

I pleaded with the driver to call back to dispatch, the driver called again and here is what dispatch told us, I could not get off unless we called emergency 911 and then it would had been a real mess in an already bumper to bumper traffic situation for everyone. Luckily I just had the dry heaves' but being on a bus in traffic, that is going at a snails pace and feeling sick as a dog with no fresh air, (since windows are not allowed to be open on the bus), is an experience I would not wish on anybody, unless of course that somebody is the person behind dispatch.
\

I never did make it to the doctors that day..

"Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery..." 'Robert "Bitos" Gandia' (Source of comedy relief)

Robert lives in Kekaha on Kauai's west-side and loves football!!
Bitos is an avid Cheeseburger connoisseur!
Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery

On the outskirts of a small town, there was a big, old pecan tree
Safety is the #1 concern
when dealing with fireworks!
Wait? Is that a cigarette?
just inside the cemetery fence. One day, two boys filled up a bucketful of nuts and sat down by the tree, out of sight, and began dividing the nuts. "One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me," said one boy. Several dropped and rolled down toward the fence.

Another boy came riding along the road on his bicycle. As he passed, he thought he heard voices from inside the cemetery. He slowed down to investigate. Sure enough, he heard, "One for you, one for me, one for you, one for me ...."
He just knew what it was. He jumped back on his bike and rode off. Just around the bend he met an old man with a cane, hobbling along.
"Come here quick," said the boy, "you won't believe what I heard! Satan and the Lord are down at the cemetery dividing up the souls!"
The man said, "Beat it kid, can't you see it's hard for me to walk." When the boy insisted though, the man hobbled slowly to the cemetery.

Standing by the fence they heard, "One for you, one for me. One for you, one for me."
The old man whispered, "Boy, you've been tellin' me the truth. Let's see if we can see the Lord...?" Shaking with fear, they peered through the fence, yet were still unable to see anything. The old man and the boy gripped the wrought iron bars of the fence tighter and tighter as they tried to get a glimpse of the Lord.
At last they heard, "One for you, one for me. That's all. Now let's go get those nuts by the fence and we'll be done...."
They say the old man had the lead for a good half-mile before the kid on the bike passed him.

"Vote no to golfing and drinking..." 'Glenn Mickens' (Kauai county watchdog)

Glenn Mickens has lived on Kauai  with his wife Ruth for the last 26 years. Born July 26, 1930 in Wilmar, California, USA) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched in four games (two of which were starts) for the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played for five years in Japan, from 1959 until 1963 for the Kintetsu Buffaloes. There, he compiled a record of 45–53 with a 2.54 ERA.  Glenn also  served in the Army for 2 years and coached baseball at UCLA for 25 years.
Last but not least Glenn would really like to see Kaua'i give the county manager style of Government a chance.
Above photo of Glenn Mickens courtesy of Kauai Garden island news, used with permission...

Editors note;
Kauai Chief of police Derryl Perry wrote an editorial in the Kaua'i
Garden Island news on the matter of legalizing drinking alcohol
on the Wailua golf course. He is asking the county council to reconsider their vote.
I agree with the Chief, The Mayor and Mr. Mickens.

Mr. Mickens is locally known
as one of Kauai county's
political watchdogs
and Nitpickers...
Mahalos Glenn!
Vote no to golfing and drinking

I was shocked and highly disappointed to see Bill 2635 passed by the council on a 6 to 1 vote. It allows the concessionaire to sell liquor on the course.

Only Council Chair Rapozo had the brains and common sense to vote against this bill and he is certainly to be commended for his action. Even though he knew that he would not have the votes to stop it he voted his conscience.
Kauai county chair
Mel Rapozo

Our Mayor very wisely vetoed the bill and I thank him for doing his part in trying to stop a very wrong bill from becoming law.

And, Kauai Police Chief, Darryl Perry, wrote an excellent article (TGI 12/24) on why this bill should not be passed and I hope that everyone got a chance to read it.
http://thegardenisland.com/news/opinion/guest/mayor-plans-correct-action-on-booze-bill/article_a6f74497-0547-554f-9b0e-dc221cdad3b2.html
He gave 10 factual, unarguable reasons why we do not need more alcohol use anywhere. He and his fine officers must be the first responders to the carnage that happens on our roads due to drinking drivers so what better source to listen to regarding bill 2635 than our Chief.

Let me quote one fine paragraph from Chief Perry's article:
" No matter how it is rationalized, the overall impact of allowing more alcohol to be served at the Wailua Golf Course adjacent to Kuhio Highway is a very bad decision and detrimental to the public we are sworn to protect."
Kauai Chief of police
Derryl Perry

Even the rational for passing this bill is extremely flawed. Supposedly by making an illegal action (drinking while playing golf) legal we are going to somehow increase the amount of golfers using the facility. People are already drinking and golfing but with no marshal to enforce the law the illegality goes on.

Tax payers are subsidizing that course to over a million dollars a year and we are trying to increase participation to make it a true enterprise fund (income greater that outgo) as it was many years ago.

Reliable sources say that we have taken in enough money over the years to maintain the course without subsidization BUT we have used those excess funds for other purposes (Like the General Fund!) and thus the need for added taxes.
Kauai Mayor
Bernard Carvalho jr.

Also, we are spending millions of dollars (Fed, State and Local) teaching our children to leave drugs along (yes, alcohol is a drug and probably the cause of more problems than any other) so by passing this bill we are sending the wrong message to them, counter to what we are trying to teach them.

Hopefully at least 2 other members of the council will join Chair Rapozo and vote "no" when this bill again comes up so that a 5 to 2 override of our Mayor's veto will not happen.

Heed the words of Michelle Obama

I hate what's happening to my country, the great United states of America.

We are a country divided.  I was hoping the election would mellow things, to the contrary if anything they have worsened.

It is my opinion and have come to realize that most hardcore Democrats lean towards being agnostic or atheist making it harder for them to comprehend forgiveness?

I  also believe most Republicans have a belief  in a higher power which makes it easier for them to forgive and able to move on in a positive light?

I believe if Hillary had won the Republicans would had been upset but would had moved on. Sure there would be turmoil, but not to the extent that we have with Donald Trump.

We  are in this together. Whether Trump was your candidate or not get over it and support him. By supporting Trump you are  supporting our country.

Michelle Obama on her recent interview with Oprah said, she  wants to do all she can to help the Trumps succeed. "If Trump succeeds, America succeeds!"
We are Americans first!  I believe all Americans should heed the advice of the First lady."When they go low, we go high."

There's an old expression, "If you can't
beat  them , join them."  Otherwise it's going to be an awfully long painful and depressing 4 years for all the  people  whom  think the world is going to end tomorrow.

Take a deep breath and repeat after me, "Love thy neighbor as thyself, that includes loving President elect Trump!

"New Years Reflections..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Friday)

Judith Whitehead lives in Amherst New York
( A suburb of Buffalo, N.Y.)
and has worked in the ophthalmology
field of medicine for nearly 40 years

New Years Reflections

The new year of 2017 is upon us, I begin to reflect on all the past years celebrations and how they have changed; as I remember when I was a teenager, it was totally unacceptable to have NO plans for the New Year celebration. There was no way I would have thought of staying home on December 31st.

It's funny how those thoughts do change as we grow up. We would start early in December trying to make our plans so we were not left out in the cold on this important day.

After I got married, we would celebrate with friends in different ways; we tried First Night downtown, dinners, movies, house parties etc. and then the children came along. It became a challenge to find a baby sitter on that all important night since most teenage baby sitters had their own plans. After our good friends' son became old enough, we had a built in babysitter and we then could go out to celebrate once again.

For so many years we would return to our house for desert to relieve our babysitter and ring in the New Year with home made confetti that my son would have been cutting up for hours; it then would rain down on us all, which took an hour to vacuum up afterwards. As I reflect on those special days, they bring on a warm and happy feeling inside.

Now a days, as our children are grown and gone and we can once again do whatever we want to do to celebrate. After all these years, the importance of that momentous day seems to have diminished somehow. It is no longer most important to find an unusual and expensive way to celebrate, and staying up after midnight poses a problem today. If we are not physically moving at that hour, we become sleepy and after that magic midnight cheer, we return home, happy enough knowing we had a nice dinner, movie or activity with our good friends. For the last decade or more, we have chosen to have a quiet time with our dear friends by choosing a movie we will all enjoy and a restaurant that is not too fussy. We have grown tired of paying the prices that have “special” packages for the most important day - it seems to give proprietors a chance to raise the prices, throw in a music maker and collect many dollars over the regular price of that exact meal that will cost much less later in the week.

It has become not the enjoyment of expensive food, but the joy of spending time with special people every year. It no longer holds the importance of finding a place to go as it did in those teenager years, and we now enjoy the happiness good company brings no matter what we are doing to celebrate.

As always, we reflect on the past year that brought happiness along with hardships and sadness, worry and celebrations and the hope that the new year of 2017 will bring good health and happiness for all whom we hold dear.

As we anticipate each new coming year, with happiness and hope that this will be the best year ever; we pray that all those that we love are care about will have the best year as well.

Happy New Years to us all.
