 Death is inevitable,be glad that your turn will come so live life to the fullest every minute, no regrets. It has been a good ride.To ease the burden of your loved ones or executors,you must prepare a list of your important documents in writing; readily show them where to obtain them when needed. It is best in a safe deposit box in a bank with authorized permission and a  key to obtain them and  with a revocable trust to avoid probate .


  Prepare for the Final Exit ,your survivors will appreciate it.
Don't forget a  REVOCABLE LIVING TRUST to Avoid Probate!

 Organizing Paperwork for an Aging Loved One.

 Observe changes in their capabilities may signal a need for a “care plan.”

 Federal Citizens Information Center When you start noticing changes in mental and physical ability of a loved one or friend, it may signal a need to develop a “care plan.”As a relative or friend ages, you may see a decline in mental and physical capabilities, even though the changes are likely to be slow and subtle. You wonder what can be done if a senior you know needs additional care or support. A “care plan” will help define the services and support needed to provide appropriate assistance. A major part of that plan is the assembling of key documents.


 Organizing Documents and Paperwork.Encourage your loved one to organize important medical information and other papers. Offer your help in a tactful way. It’s critical that this be done while your loved one is medically and mentally competent. For example, if he or she has specific wishes for end of life, they need to be documented in one place. The following items should be assembled in one place so they’re available when needed:·Medicare card ·Social Security card ·All health insurance ID cards ·Copy of birth certificate ·Names, phone numbers, and addresses of doctors ·List of current medications, the prescribing physician, and pharmacy ·Will, living will, and power of attorney ·Copies of insurance policies ·Contact information to reach the person’s tax preparer, if one is used Laminated Reference Sheet: It is a good idea for every senior to have a complete list of emergency telephone numbers and information. Laminate the list and put it an obvious place, such as on the refrigerator door or by the telephone. Put it in a place where Emergency Medical Technicians or others can access it.

"How many more years of Mt. Trashmore..?" ' Glenn Mickens' (Hawaii's Watchdog)

Glenn Mickens has lived on Kauai  with his wife Ruth for the last 27 years. Born July 26, 1930 in Wilmar, California, USA) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball. He pitched in four games (two of which were starts) for the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers. He also played for five years in Japan, from 1959 until 1963 for the Kintetsu Buffaloes. There, he compiled a record of 45–53 with a 2.54 ERA.  Glenn also  served in the Army for 2 years and coached baseball at UCLA for 25 years. 
Last but not least Glenn would really like to see Kaua'i give the county manager style of Government a chance.

How many more years must the public wait to see a true recycling and solid waste program get operational on Kauai?

 Where is the curbside pick up for cans, paper, and green waste that we were promised long ago? Where is the MRF that  Council woman JoAnn Yukimura has worked so hard to get for years? I have lived on Kauai for almost 27 years and heard when I got here that our landfill only had 5 more years before capacity was reached. That 5 and 20 more have come and gone and all that has been done is heighten and widen Mt Trashmore with no new landfill in place.


 So what is causing this problem with not only our solid waste program but with so many other ills that are permeating our county?

 Our late council member Tim Bynum had the courage to say before an election rally that, "we are not hiring the right experienced people to head our departments and thus problems are made and do not get solved."

This may not be the only cause of our multitude of problems but, it is certainly one of the major ones. The person in the "trenches" cannot be expected to do their job right if the person leading the department does not have the proper skills to tell them what to do. 

 Our Council certainly found the right person for our Auditors position, Ernie Pasion. And, for me he was the best, most efficient person they ever hired. He did his job by following his Yellow Book  without fear of uncovering anything that could cause his job loss.  The 8 audits that he did were outstanding and hopefully they will be publicly reviewed to see if all his recommendations have been incorporated to make our county more efficient.

The Mayor hired Larry Dill as our county engineer who was doing a fine job but for some reason he left and took a job with the State Highways Dept. 

 The point is that there are a lot of very experience, qualified people out there who could deal with our problems and solve them but we are not hiring enough of them.
Grocery stores all over America
have Kiosks to return bottles and cans.
The state of Hawaii is
acting like a third world country
 in returns.
Elect politicians with brains.

 Our solid waste program certainly needs help and both the Administration and the Council share in the responsibility of finding out what needs to be done.

There have been some pretty raunchy comedians in my day.

 For anyone with cable and into comedy you can watch comedians telling sex jokes, using the "F bomb every other word and using words you never heard in the bible. I never really enjoy foul mouthed comedians, however they have what is know as the 1st amendment, freedom of speech.

 I believe most foul mouthed comedians appeal more to men than woman. I cannot see most woman liking  these foul mouthed comedians, that's just me. I still look at woman as being more angelic than men, guess I still haven't learned?  ;-)

We can't walk into a crowded building and yell fire, should we be able to call our president a man who makes incest love to his daughter, or call our president a homosexual who puts the Russian President's junk (sic) in his mouth on national TV.  Where should we draw the line?

 If late night talk show hosts Jay Leno or David Letterman had ever said something similar about President Obama there would had been riots by the progressive liberals.

 Jokes about the president are expected, it's part of the job, it comes with the territory. Joke all you want about Trumps hair, his fat stomach, his junk food diet,  his lies about the crowds at inauguration, his ego, etc...


  Imagine if late night comedians had made jokes about Obama having sex with his daughters? Imagine if late night comedians made jokes about Obama having sex with a same sexed foreign leader?     We can handle jokes on George Bush being not so smart, and Obama, being  a Muslim who eats bacon and drinks beer, that's funny. I believe the line has been crossed with Potus.

 Americans do not have to agree with the President,being able to debate in a civil manner and have differences is all part of American culture. There is no need to be perverted about your public critiques and jokes of President Trump.

 I love comedy,In my dreams I'd love to be a stand-up comic.  I am not a prude, I can handle an "F bomb" and dirty jokes. I do not care for Steven Colbert,
never thought he was funny. Bill Maher on the other hand  is one of my favorite comedians, with that said I believe both of these perverse affluent comedians and their appropriate networks deserve a hefty fine. 
Whether you agree with Trump's policy or not, it's time to start respecting the office of the President.

"It's never too late to return to School..." 'Judith Whitehead' (Inspiration Friday)

It's never too late to return to School

I think as teenagers we don't always know what is best for us and our futures; I haven't been a teenager since the 1970's but I think it is much the same for today' s generation. I thought I wanted to get married in my teens and no one could tell me otherwise.

I did take the time to obtain an Associates degree in Medical Assisting and shortly thereafter started a family with my husband. It wasn't until my late 30's that I began to regret not obtaining and finishing a Bachelors Degree. Life gets in the way sometimes with family commitments and financial responsibilities. Working full timeduring days, I decided to return to a state school and at night get a degree in Gerontology. Yes, it was much more difficult to concentrate at night after having worked a long day, but I was ready for it and committed. Many students I sat next to were teenagers
and seemed to appreciate my dedication and since they did not always attend class as I did, they aligned themselves with me with homework assignments and class notes. I felt at times like I was the “mom” of the class; always sitting in the front of the room and befriending the teacher who was closer to my age. It was an added burden financially for our family but well worth it.

 Now that New York state will be affording some students financial help with their education, it is the time to take full advantage of this offer. Yes there are stipulations to this offer but considering the hundreds I had to pay at a later age, I would have jumped at the chance to have saved those mega bucks. Now that I am in my 60's I can once again take advantage of taking “free” classes as after age 65 in New York state, once can audit a class for free. Yes, although it's not for credit towards a degree any longer, but it is a great way to add to my education and expand knowledge that I can still enjoy.

 Education is never a waste of time and can fulfill so many goals. It is personally gratifying and improves earning power in many ways. The satisfaction I felt was well worth the time and the effort I spent those many nights rushing to class to get a parking spot. I also noticed that at a later age I felt almost “smarter” and was amazed how much material I enjoyed and retained those days. As long as the spirit is willing and the body able, education is boundless.


 My husband decided to return to school in his 30's as well, to obtain his Masters Degree. Attending at night and on weekends made his accomplishment attainable while working during the day as he did to finish his undergraduate degree after we had gotten married. We both graduated in June of 2001 and were able to celebrate our accomplishments together.

 Yes, we were the ones easy to spot in the audience with our salt and pepper hair and were joined by a sea of young people, which made the moment even more sweet and gratifying.

 Getting an education is never a waste of time at any age and can be accomplished with a little determination and gumption and dedication. If the mind and body is willing, there is always a way.

Rail and the insanity drum beat continues

And the insanity drum beat continues over the state's TAT tax, the amount and its allocation to all the outer islands. 

 According to TGI, 5/3 we currently receive $14.9 million in TAT revenue and if SB 1183 is passed we will receive $11.6 million or $3.3 million less, a huge 22% cut!

 Year after year our county council has strongly protested that we are not getting our fair share of the TAT tax and I completely agree.

And, we are not even getting the money our police officers are receiving from all the traffic violations that they give, money that we tax payers are entitled to. 

 And what is the state's rational for wanting to cut our share of the TAT tax even more----to fund a 20 mile multi billion dollar rail system that has doubled in price since it was first conceived. And its purpose is to alleviate traffic on Oahu which, after you read the following is a myth.

 Cliff Slater, a columnist for the Star Bulletin wrote an outstanding article in 2004 titled "Congestion, transit barely tie in" and his words ring just as true today as they did when he wrote his column 13 years ago. Let me quote you a few of his factual based studies and words:

1) When you look at  the evidence you find that improving public transportation has little or nothing to do with relieving traffic congestion. Portland, the poster city for light rail, had an increase of 20,000 transit commuters during the census period 1990-2000 which everyone has applauded as a spectacular performance. However, it also had an increase of 175,000 in the number of car-driving commuters.

billions over budget
for the Honolulu rail
which won't solve any
traffic problems.
Since Portland had done little or nothing about increasing road space (having spent the money on light rail) the result was one of the worst increases in traffic congestion in the nation. And yet its public officials still gloat over the ridership increases. 


 2) Locally Honolulu's usage of public transit for commuting has been continuously declining despite the huge subsidies provided---over $100 million in the current year. Fewer workers today commute by transit than at any time in the last 25 years. 90% of all Honolulu vehicular commuters use cars and the other 10% use transit.
Thus the traffic congestion is about cars--the 90%. You cannot improve congestion by toying around with transit, which is only 10% of the problem. Given the official estimates of population growth for the next 10 years even if we were able to increase Honolulu's (OR KAUAI'S ) transit commuters by a highly unlikely 30% it would still result in over 20.000 more cars on the road.

3) It is necessary to recognize that congestion as appalling as that of the Leeward Corridor rush hour is (OR THE KAPAA CORRIDOR!)

because road building did not keep pace with population growth. 

 Mr Slater also points to a successful traffic alleviating solution in Tampa, FL where they have built an elevated reversible tollway (buses and vans go free) from downtown to the suburbs . There are successful operations going on in the world no matter what the problems are. The point is that we do not have to reinvent the wheel but can take a page out of a successful book and use it on Kauai. We only need the leadership and the will to make it happen and that is up to the people to vote for the right leaders.

 Trump's wall and how it can be financed

 I cannot understand why so many are against President Trump's wall?


 Most Americans lock their doors to their homes and many have fenced or hedged in yards. Most people lock their cars when they go shopping. Why? To protect their assets? (asses)

 Many of the Hollywood elite that are staunch Trump haters  have  security guards at their fenced gated  in mansions with what appears to be big walls to protect their valuables.
 

 Protecting our country from drug smugglers and illegals trying to get into our country is a major problem. Drug addiction is a huge problem with our youth and population in general. A wall would deter much of the drug traffic crossing the US through the Mexican /US Boarder.

 Immigrants are what makes American great, the wall would also help deter the mass amount of illegal immigration between Mexico and The US.


 President Trump had insisted during the campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall,it doesn't look like that will happen? It doesn't look like congress will vote to pay for the wall with taxpayer money?  


 There are other creative ways to finance the wall that have come up on social media and in talking story with friends.

1- Selling  billboard advertising on the wall and it  could bring in millions.
2- Take El Chapo and other  drug cartel moneys from drug busts that is sitting in vaults to
appropriately pay for the wall, this could bring in billions.
3- Make a memorial wall where you can buy bricks for $10.00-$20.00 each to memorialize a loved one. (Yours truly thought of that!)

 I believe all three ideas could pay for the wall without one dollar of taxpayer money. I actually believe just drug cartel money alone would be enough to pay for the wall.


 The wall is not about partisan politics, the wall is about keeping our country safe.
